DeakinUniversityisalsocommittedtotheprocessofreconciliationbetweenAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderPeoplesandnon-AboriginalAustralians,particularlyviaengagementwitheducationthroughteachingandresearch.Werecognisethatasplacesoflearning,universitiesarepowerfulagentsforsocialchangeandhaveakeyroletoplayinpromotingsocialjusticeandhumanrightsforAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderPeoples.
OurvisionisforaUniversityinwhichallDeakinstudentsandstaffhaverespectforandanunderstandingofAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderknowledges,culturesandvalues.Wearecommittedtocreatingopportunitiesforallstudentsandstafftogainanunderstandingofthecontemporary,historicalandtraditionalknowledges,culturesandvaluesofAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderAustralians.
TheDeakinUniversityAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderHigherEducationAgenda2016–2020buildsonthelongandsuccessfulhistoryofeducationandresearchpartnershipswithandforAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderPeoplesatDeakinUniversity.Ithasbeendevelopedincloseconsultationwith,andendorsedby,theDirectorandseniorcolleaguesfromtheInstituteofKoorieEducation,togetherwithseniorleadersfromallareasoftheUniversity.ThisAgendaissupportedbytheUniversityAcademicBoardandCouncilandwillinformourdevelopingReconciliationPlan,theDeakinUniversitystrategicplanLIVEtheFuture:Agenda2020,ourAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderEmploymentStrategyandourworkwithUniversitiesAustraliatoimplementtheIndigenousCulturalCompetencyFramework.ThisAgendaalsorespondstoAustralianGovernmentHigherEducationStandards2.2.2and6.2.1.g.
ThisDeakinUniversityAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderHigherEducationAgenda2016–2020acknowledgesthemanyexcellentinitiatives,practicesandoutcomesthatpastandpresentcolleaguesintheInstituteofKoorieEducationandothersacrossDeakinhavedevelopedandachievedinDeakin’s41-yearhistory.
IamdelightedtopresentthisAgenda.Itisaframeworkforculturalchange,developedtoalignwithDeakin’sLIVEtheFutureAgendaandprofilesourinitiativesto embraceimprovedoutcomesforDeakin’sAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderstudents,staffandcommunitiesandtomeetexistingand,asyet,unknown challenges.Inmeetingthechallengesofthisagenda,weseektoachieveimprovementandsustainabilityacross thedepthandbreadthofourteaching,researchandengagement,including:
• recognitionandreconciliationfortheadvancementofallmembersofDeakin’scommunities,includingstaffandstudents;
• engagementwiththeAboriginalandTorresStraitIslandercommunitieswhomDeakinserves;
• educationalachievement;and

Indigenouspeoplehavetherighttomaintain,control,protectanddeveloptheirculturalheritage,traditionalknowledgeandtraditionalculturalexpressions,aswellasthemanifestationsoftheirsciences,technologiesandcultures,includinghumanandgeneticresources,seeds,medicines,knowledgeofthepropertiesoffaunaandflora,oraltraditions,literatures,designs,sportsandtraditionalgamesandvisualandperformingarts.Theyalsohavetherighttomaintain,control,protectanddeveloptheirintellectualpropertyoversuchculturalheritage,traditionalknowledge,andtraditionalculturalexpressions(UN,2007).
