LEARN ABOUT NEUROPSYCHOLOGY, LITTLE BITS AT A TIME …

NeuropsychologySA aims to enrich the knowledge of psychologists interested in the field of Neuropsychology. To this end a series of short, punchy Mini Courses will be presented.

The courses will deal in a practical way with a variety of separate aspects of brain functioning.

You may choose to do one, more, or all of them. Collectively, the Mini Courses are interlinked to equip the practitioner with a well-rounded knowledge in the field of Neuropsychology.

These courses involve watching short videos, visiting websites and completing a questionnaire.

Participants will earn approximately 3 CPD points per course.

MINI COURSE 1THE HUMAN SKULL: IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS FOR TBI 3 GENERAL CEU’S APPROVED IN LEVEL 2 (ACCREDITATION NUMBER PSB002/038/02/2016)

Don’t underestimate the importance of the skull in the understanding of brain functioning. Knowledge of the skull, its shape and structure, and the meninges beneath it, is important for understanding brain-related disorders such as: base of skull fractures; extradural, subdural and subarachnoid haematomas; loss of sense of smell due to acceleration-deceleration forces, and more. These are not generally taught and you can gain a useful advantage by acquiring this knowledge. For this course, you are required to watch an 18 minute video, visit recommended websites, consult additional resources (such as books and websites of your choice) and answer a questionnaire.

TOPICS TO BE COVERED:

• The position of the skull bones

• Haematomas

• Skull-related brain injuries

• Positioning of cranial nerves in the skull

This mini course is aimed at psychologists who do neuropsychological assessments with persons who have suffered traumatic brain injuries.

MINI COURSE 2SLEEP AND SLEEP NEUROPATHOLOGY3 GENERAL CEU’S APPROVED IN LEVEL 2 (ACCREDITATION NUMBER PSB002/037/02/2016)

Our brains control our sleep-wake functioning. While this system usually functions well, it sometimes “malfunctions”, causing strange symptoms that are often misunderstood and even sometimes attributed to something sinister. By understanding how the brain controls the body during its sleep-wake cycle, psychologists will better understand different components of narcolepsy and its consequences.

For this course, you will be required to watch a video that is 13 minutes long, visit recommended websites, consult additional resources (such as books and websites of your choice) and then answer a questionnaire.

TOPICS TO BE COVERED:

• Symptoms of narcolepsy

• REM sleep

• Sleep paralysis

• Cataplexy

• Hypnogogic and hypnopompic hallucinations

• Cultural interpretations of the experience of sleep paralysis

This mini course is aimed at all psychologists, as all psychologists need to be equipped to recognise and explain the symptoms of sleep-related disorders.

MINI COURSE 3LEFT VS. RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONING3 GENERAL CEU’S APPROVED IN LEVEL 2 (ACCREDITATION NUMBER PSB002/036/02/2016)

Many people, even psychologists, oversimplify the differences in the functioning of the left and right hemispheres of the cortex. As psychologists, though, and particularly for those working in the field of neuropsychology, it is important to understand the anatomical and functional differences as well as where the neural pathways for the various sensory systems cross, so as to better understand the effects of damage to one of the hemispheres.

For this course, you will be required to watch a video that is 20 minutes long and consult the recommended book, then answer a questionnaire. The recommended book is: Kolb, B., & Whishaw, I. Q. Fundamentals of human neuropsychology (6th or 7th ed.).

TOPICS TO BE COVERED:

• Left-handedness

• Laterality

• Anatomical differences between cortical hemispheres

• Where the neural pathways for the various sensory systems cross

• Left vs. right hemisphere functioning of the visual, auditory, motor, gustatory and olfactory systems.

This mini course is aimed at all psychologists who work with patients who have suffered strokes, brain tumours, traumatic brain injury and any other pathology that affects one hemisphere more than the other.
