31Perspective Matters

Field Goal/TryPosition: Beyond end zone and behind upright where you feel most comfortable and have the best coverage of the upright.Proper PositioningLet me take this moment to talk about game film. Im not contesting thatin fact, it is a good idea to maintain video review as part of the training program. But think about where the videos come fromespecially at the high school level. We typically do not get the angles and perspective to determine if the official was properly positioned and where he was looking at the time. So when I instruct an official to line up under the uprights to watch the inside edge of the upright, what does that mean? It makes a difference. SEQUENCE VIDEOS. The improper positioning by the official on the left put him in a position to make an incorrect call; the official on the rightGot It Rightby his understanding of the rule and by his proper positioning32

Looks Good! So, first we look at this official who is out of position. What does he see and what is his ruling?33

No Good:NFHS 8.4.1cSame Kick

Now lets look at this official in proper position viewing the same kick.34InjuriesInjured PlayerWhat do we do?What dont we do?Bleeding Player (page 100 of the rule book)When can he continue playing?Bloody uniform?Unconscious PlayerConcussion signs (page 98)Protocol?
