6. This saint was the son of an official of Spanish origin and lived at a time in
which there were divisions between the East and West in the Roman Empire.
He became a priest and served Pope Liberius, following him into exile. When
the Pope died this saint was elected to take his place. Controversy arose when
an antipope was elected at the same time. These were violent times and the
Pope himself was falsely accused of terrible scandals and eventually exiled. He
lived a simple life in contrast to other ecclesiastics of Rome and was a fierce
defender against Arianism and other heresies. He called St Jerome to Rome as
his secretary and commissioned him to make a new translation of the Bible
into Latin (the Vulgate). He also changed the liturgical language from Greek
to Latin (except for the Kyrie) and codified the canon of the Bible. During his
pontificate, Christianity was declared the official religion of the Roman state.

1.) Her reaction to the angel’s greeting is she is troubled and pensive. She is troubled but not fearful, instead
she ponders over what the greeting of God’s messenger could mean. She does not remain locked in her initial
troubled state but seeks to understand. Mary appears as a fearless woman, one who remains composed even in
the presence of something utterly unprecedented.
2.)When told she will conceive and bear a Son, she asks not whether it could happen, but how the promise is to
be fulfilled, as she has taken a vow of virginity and had entered into the betrothal so as to have a protector for
her virginity.
3.) Mary’s “fiat” - after the error of our first parents, the whole world was shrouded in darkness. Now God
seeks to enter the world anew. He knocks at Mary’s door. He needs human freedom. The only way he can
redeem man, who was created free, is by means of a free “yes” to his will. His power is tied to the unenforce-
able “yes” of a human being. ~ Jesus of Nazareth, The Infancy Narratives Pope Benedict XVI
The Annunciation to Mary 1. The Angel addresses Mary, “Hail, full of
grace, the Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly
troubled at the saying and considered in her
mind what sort of greeting this might be.
2. “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found
favor with God, and behold you will conceive
in your womb and bear a son, and you shall
call his name Jesus.”
3. “Behold, I am the handmade of the Lord. Let
it be done to me according to your word.”
