NOTES FROM FATHER BOB…

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2015

Is it sheer misery and loneliness that drives the leper in today’s Gospel towards our Lord? No doubt he’s heard rumors of Jesus’ kindly way with the sick and his extraordinary ability to cure them. Well, now that ability will really be put to the test. The leper sinks down on his knees; he’s desperate. “If you want to,” he murmurs, “you can cure me.” Jesus, we’re told, is deeply moved. He’s filled with pity or, as some scholars translate, with anger – not of course at the man, but at his disease and its dreadful consequences. In any event, he does what is unthinkable: he stretches out his hand and touches the leper, thereby incurring ritual defilement himself. But how precious that touch is to the leper! It constitutes a breakthrough, a new beginning; he’s no longer isolated; at last there’s someone who cares for him enough to risk catching his loathsome disease. And then the incredible words which are the passport back to a normal life: “Of course I want to. Be cured.” And in that instant the leprosy leaves him. The healing of leprosy was said to be as difficult as raising the dead. But Jesus accomplishes this apparently impossible task effortlessly. He now asks the cured leper to go at once to report his cure to the priests, and say nothing to anyone in the meantime. That really is asking the impossible. Jesus doesn’t want people to seek him simply as a wonder-worker, yet there is surely an understanding smile on his face when he hears that the man is sharing his story with anyone who will listen. Jesus’ touch was important for the leper but it’s also important for us. It’s one of those actions that speak louder than words, an action which shows that the Lord is inclusive, not exclusive; he draws people towards him, doesn’t send them away; he’s not unduly concerned about political correctness. If, as Paul urges in today’s second reading, we are to take Jesus as our model, we need to ask ourselves how we treat today’s lepers, those who are marginalized. How, for example, do we react to ex-prisoners or even to the innocent families of those in prison? Do we pass by those referred to as “unfortunates” as though they didn’t exist? How do we as a community behave towards the divorced and remarried; do we make them feel unwanted? Are we racist, even in our thoughts? Can we find it in our hearts to pray, or experience a shred of sympathy, for the real outsider, such as the pedophile? It’s not a question of saying that anything goes but rather of ensuring that we exclude no one from our loving concern. Some years ago a woman noticed that one of her colleagues, an alcoholic who had got drunk and made an exhibition of herself at an office party, was now being shunned by everyone. She was determined to speak to her. All she could say was: “You’re not invisible to me, anyway.” But for the woman who’d been treated like a leper, it was – well, a kind of little miracle. And we too have it in our power, the power that comes to us through our contact with Jesus at Mass, to work similar little miracles for the outcasts of our world. God’s Blessings Always, Father Bob Pastor

LENT IS A JOURNEY Where will it take you?

CRS Rice Bowl is a way for Catholics to live Lent. We invite you to Pray, Fast, Give and Learn to deepen your relationship with Christ and bring hope to our brothers and sisters in need.

Remember to pick up your Rice Bowl today, so on Ash Wednesday you can begin taking part in Catholic Relief Service’s Faith-in-Action Program.

Filled bowls should be returned to the Church narthex on Palm Sunday, March 28-29, or throughout Holy Week.

Each week during Lent we will be offering suggestions for Prayer, Fasting, and Giving, as well as a day by day spiritual guide to enrich both your personal and family Lenten Journey. Let’s get started!

LENTEN PRAYER

God of all people, We offer you our Lenten journey. May we learn to walk as one human family, remembering in a special way those who are poorest and most in need.

Bless our prayers, our fasting and our Lenten Gifts. Through these actions, we show our love for your Son, Jesus, and answer your call to love one another.

Amen.

FOOD PANTRY UPDATE Thank you all for your faithfulness to this ministry which answers Jesus’ call to feed the hungry.

We were able to prepare 200+ bags of non-perishables for our February monthly distribution, due to your generous Contributions! As we continue to replenish our shelves, most needed items include canned chili, dry pinto beans (2-3# bags) powdered/canned milk, canned peaches, pineapple, coffee, juice, baby wipes and toilet paper. A special word of appreciation to our St. Cletus team of Greater Chicago Food Depository volunteers. On the 4th Wednesday of each month, 10-15 volunteers work to earn $15.00 each toward our GCFD food purchase. This is a great financial help since the Food Pantry purchases quality items at low prices each month to supplement donations from our parishioners and friends in the community. See below for information about this volunteer opportunity. If you are interested in joining our group on one or more of the upcoming 4th Wednesdays, please e-mail Jerry Mitchell, [email protected], or contact me at [email protected]. (708) 214-5418. ST. CLETUS FIRST RECONCILIATION

FEBRUARY 7, 2015

APPREHENSION TURNED TO JOY

Last Saturday, about 120 little ones celebrated the sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. They had been preparing for that moment for months. All concerns and anxiousness melted away with the friendly, kind, and welcoming manner of the priest confessors. The morning began with a prayer service, including Scripture, music, an interactive homily, and time for reflection. We were fortunate to have 11 priests assisting the children with their Confessions. After receiving absolution , the children went to the baptismal font and were blessed by their parents, a reminder of our faith connection to the reception of our first sacrament of Baptism. Some children, in turn, blessed their parents. Parents were invited to celebrate the sacrament following the children.

The children received a small cross holy card as a token remembrance of the day.

Please join St. Cletus parishioners and friends on Friday, February 27, 6:00 p.m. in the (Morrissey Hall) School Gym for a simple Lenten soup dinner, followed by a Taizé Prayer Service in Church at 7:00 p.m. Jesus says we will be judged more by our sharing of food than by our creeds. To the Parishioners of St. Cletus, We offer our sincere thanks to each and every one of you who helped make the 6th Annual Erin Potts Invitational Volleyball Tournament a success. Your generosity supports Scatter Kindness, The Erin Potts Memorial Fund at the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation. Our first-hand experience with the cancer world affords us an understanding of the importance of initiatives that meet the emotional and financial needs of patients as they find their way through the challenges that accompany the diagnosis and treatment path of this disease. All proceeds from the tournament will support intentional acts of Kindness directed toward patients at both Hinsdale and La Grange Hospitals, including: celebratory gifts given when individuals complete treatment, monthly themed care packages of encouragement, fun and hope and also financial support in the form of gas and grocery cards. Your support of Scatter Kindness makes all this possible. One of the most difficult things to give

away is kindness; it usually comes back to you

with gratitude -

PRESIDENT’S DAY — ALL FACILITIES CLOSED AFTER 8:00 A.M. MASS

“Brothers and sisters, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.” 1 Cor 10:31

Do a quick check of your priorities. Where does God rank on that list? If He’s not first, you have some work to do. Putting God first in everything helps develop the attitude of “I am grateful for the gifts God gave me” instead of “I want more.” For most people gratitude leads to generosity.
