• Founded by Theo Van Doesburg in 1917.

• De Stijl is Dutch for ‘’The Style’’ and is also known as neoplasticism.

• Van Doesberg looked for other artists to set up a journal and start this art movement.

• Van Doesburg was also a writer, poet and a critic.

• Combination of artists and architects.

• De Stijl adopts the visual elements of Cubism and Suprematism.

• Geometric Forms and Primary Colours, including black and white.

• First ever journal devoted to abstraction in art.

• The group's members were the painters - Piet MondrianVilmos HuszarBart van der LeckThe architects –Gerrit RietyeldRobert van’t HoffJ.J.P. Oud

• Goal – The development of a new aesthetic that would be practised on fine and applied arts, as well as other art forms such as architecture, urban planning, industrial design, typography, music, poetry, furniture etc.

• Rose from the turmoil of war as a form of expression.

• Why did it end? Because of Van Doesburgs vital role within the movement, the group of artists didn’t survive. Although, other artists have adopted the movement in modern art today.

• Represents the scientific world by disregarding all complex elements of the natural world.

• Invites the viewer to focus on the ultimate basic representation of nature.

The De Stijl influence on architecture remained considerable long after 1931; Mies van der Rohe was among the most important proponents of its ideas. Between 1923 and 1924, Rietveld designed the Rietveld Schröder House, the only building to have been created completely according to De Stijl principles
