Dear Friends of The de Paul School,

Life is abundant with milestones. While each day is inherently worthy of celebration, there are certain points in time which are particularly noteworthy. Here are some milestones that we watch our sons and daughters attain: • A baby takes her first successful steps, moving from crawler to walker. • A child enters first grade… or begins middle school… or becomes a HS freshman. • That child, now a 16 year-old, receives a driver’s license • A high school graduate walks proudly up the aisle with his diploma. • The young adult, who cuddled with you only moments ago, now has her own residence.

Such accomplishments and significant life changes merit special recognition. It is right to pause from regular obligations and demands to recognize important turning points. We should never ignore opportunities to applaud once-in-a-lifetime achievements.

The de Paul School, founded in 1970, celebrated its 40th birthday during School Year 2009-2010. A 40th birthday is quite significant for schools, as it is for people. Our school community therefore made time to celebrate forty years of accomplishments, turning points, and life changes which are the fruit of “The de Paul School Difference.” We selected promise as our theme for the year. We reflected often upon promises made and promises honored which have dignified youngsters and their families for four decades and which have nurtured countless successes. We pledged as educators to continue our heritage of making and keeping astounding promises within and throughout our school community.

As you review the contents of this annual report, join me in celebrating a most noble mission: to teach stu-dents with learning differences how to learn, how to become independent, and how to succeed. Also, please join in heartfelt thanksgiving for our Founder, Sister Anne Rita Mauck. Her vision continues to inspire us as we embolden and equip our students to grow, blossom, and excel… to realize their exciting promise as individuals, scholars, and community leaders.

Congratulations to all for an honorable year!1

Attrition from 2008-2009 to 2009-2010: 10.5% (very strong considering other schools of our kind nationwide. The exact data is hard to obtain because it is not reported as a category by NAIS. Their mission is often directed more toward returning students to conventional classes and so a much greater percent of students move on each year.)

promiseAs a school community, we will be intentional in our efforts

to celebrate forty years of distinction which we know as “The

de Paul School Difference.” Our school has changed children’s,

families’ and educators’ lives for four decades. Various means

of celebration will enthusiastically spice our 2009-2010 school

year. For example, since the ruby is the official gemstone of

the fortieth anniversary/birthday, visitors will find red flowers

located throughout our campus this year. Also, given our heri-

tage of promise-making and promise-keeping with our fami-

lies… and mindful of the remarkable promise which each of

our students possesses… we have selected promise as our theme

for this entire year. There is much more planned, and we will

certainly keep you posted.

athleticsWhile teaching and learning are our most important pursuits at The de Paul School, it is clear that a vibrant athletics program compliments academic goals. Our athletics

program enriches those children who wish to improve their physical and mental well-being within a structured sports program.

Over one half of our student body wore the blue and gold as de Paul School Huskies in 2009-2010! They competed successfully against various independent, parochial, and public school programs. Their participation bolstered teamwork skills, school spirit, discipline, and self-confidence.

We acknowledge our founding Athletics Director, Jill Gaynor, for leading the Husky charge through 2009. We salute our current Athletics Director, Leslie Johnson, as she capably stewards our program while expanding offerings for our students. And, we thank the many parents who volunteer as coaches, coordinators, gym stewards, and boosters. We truly couldn’t do it without you!
