Bachata as we all know, is a very romantic and rather intimate dance form. It is also very popular for its sensuality and sex appeal. Oh my God, did I just say the 'S' word? Lol.. Get a grip, it is true. We also know that we enjoy dancing Bachata only with a few selected partners. Why do we have these preferences? I will not rationalize by saying that the man is an excellent lead or that the lady is an excellent follow because we know that the truth is a little more than that.

There are these dances where you feel your body suddenly waking up and responding to the body of the person that is dancing with you. No matter how much you try to deny it and keep it 'strictly-come-dancing'; your body reacts the way it does with this one particular or few particular dancers dancing with you. Raise your hands if you all have felt something like this. The song that is playing when you two are dancing Bachata, seems to turn into a fading mumble. You feel that is just the two of you in the whole universe. Your bodies begin to respond to a very primal man-woman rhythm. You become acutely aware of the person's body next to you. Your sense of smell is heightened; you find the smell of your partner simply intoxicating; mostly because you have compatible genes; thanks to the pheromones and your own internal 'good gene detector.' Your pupils are dilated if you have managed not to close your eyes in all that stupor. You feel a strange tingling at the base of your neck. Your feel your knees going weak. You break into a cold fever. You are probably even aroused but that is OK. And your heart beat rate increases but you just don't care. All you want, is have that song to last for an eternity.

My answer is very simple. Apart from the fact that you can lead and follow each other very well; it is very chemical. You start feeling all the above mentioned things only with partners with complimentary immune systems and compatible genes. The reason why your partner smells so damn ravishing is because your body is responding to the pheromones that your partner's body is producing. And all this while you were thinking that it was the perfume, lol.

Everybody wants this but it does not happen on every social night. And the funny part is, if you haven't realized it yet; it does not happen with everybody. Having said that, here is what I have to say to help you have a decent Bachata dance.

1. Men, do not forcibly make the woman to come into a close hold. It might ruin the dance for the both of you and she might never dance with you again. You could ask her if she would be comfortable in close hold. If she says yes, then it is up to you to take the dance forward they way you two might like. If she says no; don't even bother thinking about it.

2. The act of coming into a close hold while dancing comes from a suggestion. The man suggesting and the woman accepting the suggestion. Respect her space. If she keeps pulling back from your leech like close hold, it is your clue to let go!

3. The space between her thighs is not a freeway and neither is it a highway. Don't try to shove your thighs in there unless she gives you the green signal. Respect the woman, dude, and it will take you a long way. She is not a dancing prop.

4. Men, you dance Bachata not to impress but to FEEL. And by that, I do not mean 'FEELING UP' the woman who was kind enough to dance with you.

5. Women, speak up! If you are not comfortable in a close hold, you have to speak up. Otherwise the man will think that you are enjoying the dance. They don't have ESP.

6. Women, do not hijack his lead often. Do not 'often' hijack and do the 'I-want-to-burn-up-your-pants' Bachata. And no, that is not 'often' sexy. Infact, it is 'often' the opposite of sexy.

7. Women, do not romanticize the dance form too much. Yes, you do want to dance with 'the one' but not every guy who asks you to dance can live up to your expectations.

8. Open hold Bachata can be pleasurable too.

9. Always remember that Bachata is still a dance.

10. Chew a breath mint, wear deodorant and do not be sweating like a pig. This is not always possible but you gotta try anyway.

11. Experienced dancers make it look sexy and easy but it is not. Not all of us are Latin and Latin music was certainly was not playing in the hospitals in which we were born. So, my point is that, practice that sexy Latin hip movements at home before the mirror so that you look a lot better on the dance floor.

12. Girl on girl Bachata is sexy. Women, it is ok to dance with other women. And no, you will not be termed as a lesbian.

13.Guy on guy Bachata... Err.. I have no comments.

14.Hey Mr.DJ, please do not play more than 3 Bachata numbers in a row in the Salsa socials. Bachata is like a sweet dessert but too much of it can kill us with its sweetness.

15. Girl, before I forget; DO NOT ATTACH YOUR EMOTIONS with a man with whom you can dance intimately. He is great dancer and a fantastic lead but be aware that your body is on a OXYTOXIN high. The cuddle hormone will give you a false sense of intimacy. Do not fall for it unless you are sure that guy is equally into you and that he likes you.

Well, right at the onset let me make it clear that this 'write-up' is not an attempt to advertise Danza De La Liga (DDLL) or use big flowery words

which would make someone wonder, if I have been bribed to do that , but it's more of an experience sharing to justify why I would endorse

DDLL and would always be one of theirs “die hard” patrons.

When people say they have two left feet , they wouldn't have met me , coz I come with one more of those (it's still just an expression , please

don't get ideas ) . I and dance was more like Tom and Jerry .You can take their name alongside but that's about how close they get, For the

most part they would be trying to kill each other anyways. The only “fun” part about me and dancing was probably the fact that my friends and

pretty much everyone around would have a hearty laugh at my expense and to add insult to injury, it cost me few potential girlfriends and real

good ones that too( I am not saying some girls are shallow, wait.. maybe I am ).

So for most part of my growing up days, I consciously tried to keep myself away from any area where I would be expected to contribute with

“dance” except say some weddings, where we all will agree dancing is the last thing that happens. It's more of a group of drunken, well

dressed human chimps jumping and gyrating more on the tunes of liquor running in the veins than the beats of music . So basically I had pretty

much given into the fact that this is the only sacrosanct way ahead for me and my nemesis called Dance.

The word 'accident' is not entirely negative. There are some very pleasant and fruitful 'accidents'. Meeting Aarti at the gym was one such

pleasant accident and another reason why I advocate going to gym regularly . We got to talk and she mentioned DDLL which at that time

was about to be launched and that they were starting a beginners level batch of salsa shortly at the gym . I guess I told her about my

exceptional talent of being a “dance molester”. Still she encouraged me to give it a shot and take a call myself whether, I would want to

continue . Back home , lying down on the bed in the night, I gave it a serious thought (giving Salsa a shot I mean, not Aarti who by that time had

already thrown “ I am married” grenade at me ) . The kind of trepidation that locks the hands and freezes the knees was bothering me. All I

needed was to overcome was the self inhibition and maybe the shyness that arises from having three left feet. After almost 2 hours and few

cups of coffee, I thought of taking the bull by horns. My logic was – “Hope for the best but prepare for the worst”. Worst would be, around 15

people laughing at me and would have to avoid running into Aarti and 15 other people . In a city of around 4 million people, it's an easy

calculation to work out with. So, I decided to jump the cliff and boy was I glad I did that.

The first day's introduction was as comforting as the big couch. I could see people from the age group of 18 till 40 something (not me FYI) with

almost the same apprehensions and inhibitions as that of mine . I learned one aspect of human behavior that day, there is nothing more

comforting than seeing others suck as much as you do and have the same issues . It gives you hope in a weird way . The best part was the

manner in which Aarti and Bhavin handled the bunch with not just blank comforts talks but that instant sense of friendliness which made us feel

that they are not “trainers” but our “experienced friends” who would share their experience of dance with us. The next hour or so just passed by

and by the end of it I am sure we all had gotten rid of our baggage. For me, it was more of a revelation . What they told us either explicitly or

implicitly by the way they taught, joked and explained is dancing is more about confidence than anything else anyways. Practicing rhythm, just

being confident and KNOWING you look cool dancing what you are. And trusting your body and yourself. From the next session onwards the

inhibition in me had been replaced by the new knowledge in hand and thirst for understanding a world I know so little of, there wasn't a thing

that could stop me from getting indulged into it more and more . It's like telling a person on low carb diet for years, that chocolate fudge ice

creams and pastries are the best fat burners ever and the more you eat , the leaner you become. Only one word – Godsend.

The traits which differentiate DDLL from other “dance training shops” is in the core of its existence . DDLL's core is the immense sense of passion

towards dance and the zeal to improve still and ever . Aarti, Bhavin ,Irisha and Awadhesh display that in the way they express , the way they

react , the school boy's spirit you see in their eyes when they dance or even talk about dance . It's contagious and transpires the passion. This

coupled with the sense of camaraderie and friendliness they develop with everyone around . They don't sell teaching dance . They offer

learning “Dancing with Friends”. The same ethos are well visible in the very talented line of instructors ( Chandni , Pratik and Soonruta ). Don't just

believe me, I am talking about 500+ enthusiasts who have learned from them in less than 9 months and keep coming back for more to their

regular parties, workshops, fun escapades etc. One of my lines that I use on my boss at work very often about creating new business is , “Good

business sense is in making your friends your customers , whom you want to be with but Great business sense is making your customers your

friends ,who would want to be with you and that comes from the amount of heart and passion you are putting in your product”. DDLL fits clearly

in the second category.

The last proof is anybody who could make a “three left feet” guy like me feel this way about Dance has to be something. It's like, they

managed to get Tom and Jerry get into a relationship after all. Weird combination still but awesome. Can't thank you enough guys. In fact won't.

I am not done yet.

I am mesmerized by the world and the culture that is Dance. Its potential is tremendous. Dance can do

wonders to you that are beyond imagination. And I cannot be more proud and lucky to be a part of this

beautiful culture.

During my school life, I learnt Bharatnatyam for over six years. After which I went on to learning Salsa

for fun and I fell in love with it. I found it extremely addictive and since then I haven't stopped dancing

Salsa. Being convinced about making a career in the Education field, I moved to Delhi to work with an

NGO and I experienced the Salsa in Delhi which made me completely crazy about Salsa! I was

experiencing this kind of a passion for the very first time!

Danza De La Liga, a fabulous venture my friends had started, gave me the opportunity to make this

passion into a profession and it is an absolute pleasure to work with an amazing, enthusiastic and super

talented bunch of people.

All I want is for everyone to experience at least 1% of the dance culture because there is endless

happiness in there. It is a blissful phenomenon!
