  • DCC Runners in Honolulu Marathon

What a difference a year makes! While runners in last year's Honolulu Marathon braved the wind and rain, this year's running of the 16th Annual Honolulu Marathon on December 11 was a very bright and sunny running affair.

Almost perfect running weather greeted the OCC marathoners and aid station volunteers. An early 5:30 a.m. start, cool, clear and star-bright condi-tions sent some 9,000 plus international field of runners from the Aloha Tower start on a challenging 26 mile, 385 yard adventure.

And a race it was! Honeymooner and 1986 New York Marathon winner, Gianni Poli of Italy took top male honors with his winning time of 2:12:47, the third fastest time in the his-tory of the Marathon. Elite woman

    By Emary Lucas

runner, Cyndie Welte, took first female honors with little competition in an easy 2:41:52.

Twenty-four eager OCC marathoners arrived at the Club, once again, in this annual rite of winter, to compete with themselves and to enjoy the running ex-perience and camaraderie of fellow marathoners from around the globe.

The course is described as a chal-lenging, out-and-back one. It takes a runner up Ala Moana, through Waikiki via Kalakaua Avenue, where hundreds of early morning spectators cheer the entire length of Kalakaua Avenue.

The large, overhead banner pro-claiming "Outrigger Canoe Club" at the 8/23 mile marker, is always a runner's high due to the cheering and supportive motives of all the OCC aid station

volunteers, making this aid station the most sought after by runners.

Once past the ARCO station and onto a windy Kalanianaole Highway, it's a run to Hawaii Kai and back again, fmally to Diamond Head and the Finish Line at Kapiolani Park and the waiting OCC food and refreshment tent. It's time to reflect on that glorious feeling of personal achievement and courage in a race where every finisher is a winner.

Outrigger's first finisher was Bill Danford in 3:17:10, followed by Emary Lucas in 3:17:42. Not far behind were Tommy Holmes, 3:27; Jim Stahl, 3:33; and Bill Breeden and Binney William-son, 3:39.

Outrigger's first woman finisher was Tanya Watumull in 3:37. This was Tanya's first marathon. r1J

Gathering at the Club for a ride to the starting line were front, Andrea Lehman, Norm Dunmire, John Butler. Second row, Emary Lucas, Kristie Doktor, Gerry DeBenedetti, Dave Monahan, Ken Brown, Hilary Lambert. Third row, Bill Breeden, Grant Senner, Jim Foytich, Jamie Beardmore, Bill Danford, Tanya Watumull.

  • Marathon Aid Station ll was a half hour earlier than usual, but that didn't keep nearly 150 Outrigger members and their friends from showing up to work in the Club's Honolulu Marathon Aid Station on Kahala Avenue on December 11.

With the race starting at 5:30 a.m., helpers needed to be there by 5 a.m. to set up tables, soak the sponges, and flll

coolers with ice for coke and "wata". The first runners hit the Aid Station

in the dark at about 6 a.m. amid cheers and encouragement

Before the morning was over, more than 9,000 runners passed us going out at mile 8 and coming back at mile 23 on their way to the finish line at Kapiolani Park.

It's fun watching the various runners-from the elite to the not so swift. The costumes are wonderful, in-cluding the guy wearing only a G-string who woke up quite a few Outrigger ladies.

Our thanks to all who helped. See you next year! ~)

The lead runner is escorted on way to finish line. Waiting for used sponges are Mike Scott, Lee LeGrande and David Buck.

  • Backward Glances By Cobey Black. Historical Commillee 70 Years Ago 1919-The world was shocked when Australia's aquatic sta r, Annette Kellerman, appeared in a one-piece bathing suit, the first ever worn by a female swimmer. But soon after, when Hawaii's champion swimmer, Ruth Stacker, followed suit by appearing on Waikiki Beach, right in front of the Outrigger Canoe Club, in a one-piece suit without s tockings, island beachgoers were truly scandalized.

40 Years Ago 1949-The cover of Forecast for February, 1949, featured a pair of hands ome volleyball champs, Doc Beardmore and Bobby Dolan, being congratulated by a sm iling Bill Barnhart and a sleepy Yabo Taylor. Explained the caption: Yabo looks that way because it's his first night out since his recent marriage. 30 Years Ago 1959-Twelve-year-old Fred

    DCC Elections By Gerry DeBenedelli

Just having made it through the election process of 1988, you should be in practice to exercise your 1989 vote at the Outrigger Canoe Club Election for a new Board of Directors.

You will be receiving your ballot in the mail in early February. This is time dated, please don't ignore it, throw it in the "read later" pile of mail, or think it's your bill and put it off until the 14th.

The people you vote for will be in charge of guiding this Club, choosing the management, approving the activi-ties we fund and directing the long range policies of the Club.

When your ballot arrives , it will have voting instructions on it, but these will be repeated here for you as a reminder.

The final date to vote is Sunday, February 19, at 6 p.m. Do it as soon as you receive your ballot. Mail it or drop it at the Club, but do it.

Sign the outside envelope on the bal-lot, include your number and write legibly. Ballots without the outside en-velope are discarded. Your signature tells the election judge that you are a qualified voting member. If you are de-linquent in paying your bill, your ballot is invalid. Pay up and vote.

Vote for no more than seven candi-dates. You may vote for less th an seven. The candidates with the highest number of votes are those who are

    elected. All Senior, Regular, Intermediate

and Life members of the Club in good standing are eligible to vote. Your vote counts. Please kokua.

Attend the annual meeting on Mon-day, February 20 at 5:30 p.m. and hear the commillee reports and e lection results. Become involved with the operations of your Club. i

    Rule of the Month Guests

Any member in good standing may bring guests to the Club provided they are not persona non grata.

No guest shall use the Club more than two days in any one month. This limitation does not apply to spouses of members or ladies and gemlemen accompany-ing s ing le men or women members, respectively.

Members arc responsible for determining their guests' eligibil-ity. Guests are required to remain in the company of the host mem-ber as long as the guest remains on Club premises.

Hemmings Jr., one of the Club's most promising young surfers, captured the 13-and-under Diamond Head c hampions hip, while another Hemmings, Cynthia, was one of four young Hawaii surfers chosen to compete in Peru. The others: Kehau Kea, Peter Cole and Clarence "Mac" Maki, with Joe Napoleon as an alternate. On the political scene, Ward Russell took over as Floor Leader in the Legis lature. 20 Years Ago 1969-The Second Annual Awards Banquet of the Winged "0", highest honor of the OCC, was presided over by President "Howdie" Goss, who inducted Jerry Ober and Fred Hemmings Jr. into the elite ranks of the original Winged "0" recipients: Duke Kahanamoku, Tommy Arnott , Cline Mann, Mark Buck, Ron Sorrell, Albert Lemes, Wally Young and Tom Haine. rg

sports at Menlo College, for his fratern-ity at the University of Arizona, and later, California College of Arts and Crafts and the University of Hawaii Graduate School.

Unlike most of the Winged "0" honorees, Jerry gained this distinction for his outstanding contributions of a service nature to Club teams, rather than for athletic prowess as a compet-ing team member.

The Forecast, predecessor to The Outrigger, was Jerry's baby from 1966 to 1971 and he was largely responsible for the transition to the present fonnat He served as sports reporter until 1975. Under his guidance, The Forecast grew in stature with the emphasis always on the perpetuation of the Club's athletic heritage in Hawaiian water sports.

He has served on the Athletic, Enter-tainment and Public Relations Commit-tees, and was a stabilizing force in the early development of the Junior Sports Program.

He is most proud of his work with the Club's youngsters and their athletic involvement, primarily in competitive canoe racing. In. canoeing, Jerry's interest has gone beyond that of or-ganizer alone.

He was the steersman on two State Championships crews, having steered the Novice crew to a win in the flfSt State Championship regatta in 1959, and again eight years later in 1967, steering the Freshmen men to another win. His most cherished gold medal, however, came with his crew's winning the Club-sponsored Macfarlane Day Regatta in 1969.

His great contribution in the direc-tion and planning of the logistics of several Molokai to Oahu Canoe races cannot be overstated. Our crew's past victories in this event stand as testimon-ial to the backing of a handful of loyal Club members, the likes of Jerry Ober.

A private pilot since 1945, Jerry is also an avid backpacker and keeps in shape by running. He has been recognized by the Club for more than 3,000 miles of running.

Jerry's profession was graphic arts, but mostly he was a guy the OCC de-

pended on to give his all, (Uld he always did.

Jerry is now a Nonresident member, living in California @)

  • Looong Distance Swim By Jim Anderson The 8th Possibly Annual Looong Dis-tance Swim was held on December 18 under very difficult conditions. The course, which starts at Kaimana Beach runs out the Outrigger channel 700 yards to a buoy, then to the outer Ala Wai Harbor Channel marker and returns to Kaimana Beach, a 7K course.

Strong northerly winds the day be-fore cooled not only the air but the water. Race day had all the appear-ances of a fun early morning workout, clear skies, tradewinds and favorable tides. This sense of security was further reinforced by the record fast times it took for the 58 swimmers to reach the tum around point. Everyone thought, oh boy, record times.

When the Waikiki Beach high rise buildings failed to go by and the strong chop they were swimming against per-sisted and persisted, the realization began to dawn-there is a very strong current we are swimming against.

All things considered, this was the toughest and slowest Looong Distance swim on record. There was no doubt in anybody's mind, swimmer or escort, that this was indeed a very difficult swim.

First to fmish in both the female and male categories were two young swimmers who came from New Zea-land-Marisa Pentecost and Dean Wal-ter.

Eight swimmers and 10 escorts who are OCC members participated.

For safety reasons, each swimmer must have an escon on a surfboard, surfski or kayak accompanying them. In many ways, the escort's job is more difficult, as they are exposed to the

  • Keiki Christmas

    Party By Kris Smith

The annual Keiki ChrisUnas Party was held on December 14. OCC keikis and their parents were treated to a wonderful buffet followed by the antics of Stevo the Clown. At dusk, the throng rushed out to greet Santa who arrived on schedule by outrigger canoe.

Due to the ever growing popularity of this event and the problems of the crunch created by the children waiting to see Santa, a slightly different format will be invoked next year. It is recommended that you make your reservations early, as Santa will talk to the keikis based on when reservations were made. This should make this event more pleasant for all involved.

In the photos by Marilyn Kali, keikis enjoy the party. @J

  • DCC Cyclers Ready To Go The OCC Cycling Commiuee has an ex-citing program planned for 1989. A com-bination of weekend events and daily training rides are being scheduled to pro-vide plenty of excuses to spin your wheels with other Club members.

We are also looking into the possibility of expanded use of Club fa-cilities for cyclists and have sent out a survey to all members to get input on what we should be doing.

Training rides are going to leave the Club every weekday evening at 5 p.m. Rich Blum will lead a one-hour ride (longer or shorter depending on dark-ness). The ride will be at a moderate pace in the Hawaii Kai direction.

Quarterly events will feature a Sun-day morning ride built around a theme such as eating, invading other clubs or just generally getting rowdy.

Storage of sports equipment has al-ways been a big benefit of Club membership for canoeists, surfers, kayakers and sailers, as well as users of smaller stuff like running shoes. Well, your committee is looking into ways to make secure storage available for cy-clists too. The problems to be over-come are finding space, controlling its use and making sure storage is active, not abandoned.

The Committee needs your help. If you have any ideas, we need all the

No Fishing Around Club Club members are reminded that the Waikiki-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisher-ies Management Area will be closed to all fishing activities for one year, from January 1 to December 31, 1989.

The area includes the nearshore waters between the Natatorium and the Diamond Head Lighthouse, and from the high-water mark on shore to a minimum seaward distance of 500 yards or to the edge of the fringing reef.

Any person violating the law is guilty of a petty misdemeanor and may be subject to a maximum penalty of $500 and/or 30 days in jail. ~

help we can geL Contact any member of the committee if you want to help. Members are Jill Cheever, chairperson; Rich Blum, Steve Timpson, Joette Wheelon, Allen Williams, Pat Blum and Lissa Dunford.

Watch the Bulletin Board in the Tunnel for current news of OCC cy-cling. The new Bicycling section op-posite the Beach Shop will feature a ride calendar and info on special events. If you want to lead a ride or let others know when you ride, give us a 3x5 card with details and we will post it.

We have also made special arrange-ments with the Hawaii Bicycling Lea-gue to become an organizational member and participate in all HBL sanctioned events. This will extend LAW membership and insurance cover-age to OCC Cycling and you can get your own individual membership which

includes the bi-monthly newsletter de-livered to your home for the special dis-count rate of $5. Just give us a call for details or stop by the Bikeway for an application.

The survey in your OCC bill is your way of telling us what you want, so don't throw it away. Fill it out and send it back when you pay your bill or drop it off at the Front Desk. The more interest we get, the more we are going to be able to do for you.

See you on the road! ~
