• The NIU Art Museum (first floor, west end of Altgeld Hall) contrasts the challenges of contemporary art with the riches of traditional visual media through rotating displays of thematic exhibitions and related programming.

• The Office of External Programs brings the talents and resources of the College to people in the community and region with workshops, conferences, lessons, summer camps, and other events.

The Green and Blue Line Bus Services connecting DeKalb and Sycamore are affordable and open to the general public. The cost is $.50 per ride. Children under 5 ride free. Exact change is required. Senior Citizens (60 and older), persons with disabilities and Medicare conditions ride free.

Buses run Monday – Friday, from 7am – 9pm, except holidays. They also connect between Sycamore and DeKalb at the following locations:

Shabbona Lake State Park

Lake Shabbona is featured on the cover of our visitor guide. It is a state park and attracts approximately 425,000 visitors to DeKalb county each year. It is one of the premier Muskie fishing destinations in Illinois. It’s easily accessible from the Chicago area via I-88. Visitors from the Northeast or Southeast, take IL Rt. 47 to US 30 West to Shabbona. Shabbona Lake has 1,550 acres of rolling prairie and features a 318.8 acre man-made fishing lake that is always fully stocked. There’s also Pokanoka’s Café, a Camp Store, and Lakeside Bait, Tackle & Boat Rental for added convenience. October is rent a boat all day and get one rental free. Pokanoka’s Café seats 60 indoors and also has outdoor seating as well as offering delivery on the water to those that are fishing.

The Lake is open year-round and offers a wide variety of family-friendly activities:

Northern Illinois University

LeeA visit to the quaint Village of Lee wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Hardanger Hus. This shop boasts a wide selection of Norwegian and Swedish gifts, material and thread for needle work, jewelry books, and other unique finds. It has been a staple in the community for more than 30 years.

MaltaCome share in the Lincoln Highway’s wonderful heritage. Our seedling mile mural is a hand painted, unique work of art. The mural is located on the Historical Society’s Old Town Hall Museum at 127 North Third Street. It depicts the history of the first concrete mile of paved highway coast to coast. Our small town festival in June with big town attractions will feature free entertainment all weekend, a carnival, food vendors, car show and beer garden. Visit Jonamac Orchard September through November for the corn maze and apples.

Maple ParkMaple Park is located on the edge of DeKalb County. It was founded in 1854 and named to reflect the many Maple trees growing in the area. Enjoy the many family-owned businesses, orchards and vegetable markets in and around the area. One event that draws many families to Maple Park is the Labor Day Weekend Fun Fest, complete with softball games, 5K run, crafts, parade and a huge display of fireworks.

SandwichSandwich is centrally located 60 miles west of Chicago. Visitors and residents can peruse a number of specialty shops and fine restaurants. The Sandwich Antique Market and Sandwich Fair bring visitors to the historic Sandwich Opera House, local home for the performing arts, providing live entertainment to the area. ShabbonaShabbona is home to Shabbona Lake State Park and Indian Oaks Golf Course located in southern DeKalb County, about halfway between Chicago and Rockford. Shabbona Lake State Park is a 318-acre man-made lake that is said to be the “Muskie Capital of Illinois.” It is the first and only lake in Illinois designed just for fishing. The 6.5 miles of wooded shoreline have five earthen fishing piers, a handicap-accessible fishing pier and is open year-round.
