Selection Guide

Step 1. Motor type and physical dimensions

Consider motor technology and physical dimensions when selecting

the potential candidates from the catalog. In this example

coreless motors up to SCL12-30 series (φ= 12.5 x L = 32 mm)

will be considered.

Step 2. Working point and max. continuous values

Knowing the motor working point, NR = 4000 rpm and TR = 1.4

mNm, select from datasheets all motors where working point is

inside of the continuous operating area. In this example SCL12-22

(max. continuous torque 1.6 mNm) and SCL12-30 series will be

considered (max. continuous torque 2.09 mNm).

Step 3. Voltage and current supply

Verify if selected motors are able to operate at the working point

with the available max. current and voltage supply.

Step 4. Motor performance analysis

Once the motors operatable at the working point have been

defined performance around the working point can be calculated.

- Current absorbed at working point, IR [A]

- Motor efficiency at working point, h [%]

Note: In this catalog only standard coils are shown. If desired,

Gearhead selection

If a motor-gearhead combination is requested, before proceeding

with step 2, calculate working point at motor output shaft. For

gearhead selection, where life expectancy is concerned, it is

DC motor performances are generally defined using the

relationship between torque and the other major 4 parameters

(current-I, speed-N, output power-P and efficiency-h) as illustrated

in figure 1. Speed-N and current-I curves are directly related to

torque. (I) is in proportion to torque while (N) is inversely

proportional. The peak of output power (P) and efficiency (h) exist

at different torque points as shown in figure 1. Output power (P)

curve draws a parabola variable by Ts, while efficiency (h)

decreases straight down beyond the peak.

As Pmax exists at half the starting torque (Ts/2) point and

maximum efficiency at a much lower point, both peaks can not be

obtained at the same time. This means that it is not possible to

operate a motor simultaneously at maximum power and efficiency.

Motor Curves

In this catalog only the speed-N and current-I versus torque curves

are illustrated, while for output power-P and efficiency-h the

maximum values reached when the motor is supplied with nominal

voltage are indicated. In addition, for easy motor selection the

working area in continuous operation is also displayed as

illustrated in figure 2.

Life expectancy

Since product life is strongly affected, not only by the output speed

and torque, but also by the environmental conditions (temperature,

humidity, vibration, etc.), operating mode (linear/switching drive

circuit, start/stop and CW/CCW operation) and shaft load (axial

and radial load), tests in the application are always recommended.

The working area is defined by the maximum continuous motor

speed and torque (for sensorless brushless motors the minimum

speed is also considered). An ideal motor life should be achievable

in normal conditions where the shaft loads are not exceeded if the

motor is operated within this area. Since the working area is

independent of the motor voltage supply, to operate in all working

area it is necessary to select the appropriate voltage supply. For

example when the SBL22-3727 brushless motor is supplied with

24V, no-load speed is 4825 rpm, see figure 2. To operate at higher

speed it is necessary to increase the voltage supply. Since no-load

speed (No) and starting torque (Ts) are both in proportion to

voltage, speed versus torque curve reacts parallel to voltage, while

speed/torque gradient (slope) remains constant as shown in figure

3, and output power vary as shown in figure 4.

1. Nominal Voltage [V]

The reference voltage at which all other specifications are

measured.

2. Terminal resistance [W]

The electrical resistance measured across the motor terminals at

room temperature (for coreless motors, contact resistance

included). This value fluctuates depending on the brush and

commutator segment location. In this catalog the lowest values are

indicated.

3. Output power [W]

Max. motor mechanical output power achievable at nominal

voltage.

4. Efficiency [%]

Motor converts electrical input power to mechanical output power.

This conversion involves energy losses. Efficiency is the percentage

indication of the input and output power conversion.

5. No-load speed [rpm]

Number of rotations per minute at no-load condition when the

motor is supplied with nominal voltage.

6. No-load current [mA]

Current absorbed under no-load condition. This current is

generated by internal mechanical friction losses between brush

and commutator segments (coreless motors only), and between

the bearings and motor shaft.

7. Stall (starting) torque [mNm]

Torque produced at stall (starting) condition when supplied with

nominal voltage.

8. Friction torque [mNm]

Torque caused by friction losses in the bearings and commutation

system (for coreless motor only).

9. Back-EMF constant [mV/rpm]

This constant indicated the relationship between the induced

voltage in the coil and the shaft speed.

10. Torque constant [mNm/A]

This constant indicate the relationship between the generated

output torque and the absorbed current.

11. Slope of N-T curve [rpm/mNm]

This value indicates the relationship between the speed variation

and the torque variation. The lower this value is the stronger is the

motor.

12. Coil inductance [mH]

The inductance measured across the motor terminals at 1kHz.

13. Mechanical time constant [ms]

This constant indicates the time required by the motor to

accelerate from standstill to 63.2% of the no-load speed.

14. Rotor inertia [gcm2]

Mass moment of inertia of the motor.

15. Speed range [rpm]

The max. permissible speed is the limit that should not be

exceeded in continuous operation. For Sensorless Brushless Motors

also the min. operating speed is indicated.

16. Max. torque [mNm]

The max. permissible torque is the limit that should not be

exceeded in continuous operation.

17. Operating temperature [°C]

The most applicable temperature range.

18. Max. coil temperature [°C]

The max. allowable coil temperature.

19. Thermal resistances ( Rth1 / Rth2) [K/W]

The first value, Rth1, corresponds to the thermal resistance

between coil and housing while the second, Rth2, between housing

and ambient. For brushless motors Rth2 can be substantially

reduced, and the motor performance increases, by using a heat

sink.

20. Bearing type

Type of bearings used for the motor.

21. Shaft max. radial load [N]

The max. radial load (from the motor flange) is the limit for

continuous operation that should not be exceeded if optimal

bearing life performance are requested.

22. Shaft max. axial load [N]

The max. axial load is the limit for continuous operation that should

not be exceeded if optimal bearing life performance are requested.

23. Shaft max. axial load at standstill [N]

Max. press fit force at stand still when shaft is held.

24. Shaft max. radial play [mm]

Max. shaft radial play measured at the output shaft side.

25. Shaft max. axial play [mm]

Max. shaft axial play measured at the output shaft side.

SSD22 is a 3-phase sensorless drive circuit designed to operate brushless motor SBL22-37 exclusively. The desired motor speed is set by

selecting the appropriate voltage supply, VCC. CW direction is obtained by connecting CW/CCW input to VREG, if not connected the motor

runs CCW. FG (Frequency Generator) output generates 3 pulses per motor revolution. The LOCK output provides in normal operation an high

logic level "1", in motor stall condition a low logic level "0". Internal thermal protection circuit included.
