Work begins on £4.9 million scanning facility at DRI

A project to build a new Computed Tomography (CT) scanner suite at DRI began last week, as representatives from DBTH, the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust (DCDT) and Dame Rosie Winterton MP officiated at the ceremonial ground breaking event.

This development is a result of DBTH receiving £4.9 million from the Department of Health and Social Care, which was awarded to the Trust thanks to a bid put forward by the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System, to build the brand new facility at DRI, with additional support from the DCDT to purchase a second CT scanner. CT scanners are crucial for diagnosis, guiding further tests or treatments, and are instrumental in diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as cancer. Mr Sewa Singh, Medical Director, said: “The Trust is delighted to have received the funding to enable us to build this brand new, and state-of-the-art suite at DRI In the past five years, we have seen local demand for our current CT machine increase by 70%, with almost 25,000 scans undertaken in the last financial year. Once complete, the new facility will house two state-of-the-art CT scanners, linked by a common control room, increasing the amount of scans we can undertake to 36,000 a year and removing the need to use a mobile CT scanner.” “We believe that this will substantially benefit patients to get the right diagnosis, at the right time and with the best means available to the NHS. I want to extend our collective thanks to everyone at the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust and particularly to Jeanette Fish MBE, who set up the charity and was a driving force behind much of their fundraising before sadly passing away last year.” The DCDT has supported DBTH since the 1970s, raising more than £10 million. Starting in 1972 by donating a bronchoscope, the DCDT have since purchased around a 80 pieces of specialist medical equipment for DRI. Volunteers at the DCDT have been steadfastly raising money for a new CT scanner at the local hospital, raising around £500,000 from public donations to purchase the much-needed device. Dame Rosie Winterton, MP for Doncaster Central, said: “‘As Patron of Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust, it is an honour to celebrate all the hard work and fundraising that they do. The benefit the new CT suite and scanner will have for patients is tremendous with an increased capacity for CT scans of an estimated 51%. This will go a long way in diagnosing cancer, as well as urgent and emergency patients.” Increasing CT capacity with this investment and development at DRI is also key for fulfilling the Trust’s Hyper Acute Stroke Unit commitments. Work which took place last year across all partners within the

South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System (ICS) concluded that the number of Hyper Acute Stroke Units in the region should reduce from five to three, with DBTH maintaining and expanding its service. This change will increase the number of stroke patients seen within Doncaster meaning increased CT capacity is paramount in ensuring patients receive effective thrombolysis treatment. The project to build the new CT suite is being undertaken by Vinci Construction. The building works will take around 54 weeks to complete and, it is hoped, the facility will open in March 2020.

SET Training ReminderIt is mandatory for all Staff to complete their SET Training before it expires.

This extends to each and every module of the training, from Fire Safety right through to Conflict Resolution. Whilst you can only attain compliance in these areas by attending the relevant lectures, most other aspects of your compulsory training can actually be covered by simply taking the SET booklet.

The test incorporates several modules in one and is an easy way to stay on top of your various competencies. One of the key topics covered here is Data Security & Protection. It is critical that our staff are compliant in this area as, if they are not, then it can put the Trust at risk and prevent us from doing certain things.

With that in mind, please take the time to ensure you have completed the module. If you are unable to take the SET booklet for whatever reason, then in-person briefings can be delivered instead. For more information, please contact Roy Underwood, Head Of Information Governance, at [email protected].

Developing educational packages Do you have a new Clinical Skills Package or Non-Clinical Training Package you would like to use in the Trust? Do you need an existing training package converting to eLearning?

A Trust Board approved process for submitting Educational Packages is now in place. This process is headed by the Education Package Governance Group (EPGG) with the aim of ensuring the quality of all education packages implemented across the organisation. Prior to writing/submitting a training package it is important to check it does not already exist. For example, when developing an eLearning module there are various platforms which offer free products for the NHS to use.

So, please ensure you check the Oracle Learning Management System (OLMS) and the eLearning for Health website (eLfH) prior to writing or submitting your package. For further information, please visit the Education Package Governance Group Intranet page. On this page you will find the clinical and non-clinical templates that your package must adhere to along with the Education Package Development Checklist, which must be completed and submitted with your training package.

Planned Disruption of Power – Saturday 23 February The Estates Team at DRI is undertaking important planned infrastructure upgrade work to electrical equipment which requires some power supplies to be turned off.

Areas affected: Women and Children’s, West Ward Block and Blocks A to E.

At 5am on Saturday 23 February 2019, the electricity supply to the above areas will be limited to essential power only in clinical areas, and no power at all to blocks A to E.

This shutdown will allow the Trust to replace old equipment and will lead to increased electrical capacity and resilience. The period of limited power is expected to be for a maximum of 12 hours. Estates have been working closely with stakeholders in the areas affected to minimise disruption and to put contingencies in place for the day. If you are concerned that you work in an area that will be affected and you, or your colleagues, have not yet been contacted by Estates, please contact the Project Manager for the works Scott Woodrup: 07971 020534 as a matter of urgency. Throughout the period of the works on 23 February 2019 Estates staff, as well as members of the senior management team, will be on site should they be needed. Scott Woodrup (07971 020534) will be the main contact on the day to manage all calls/concerns.

Thank you Chatsfield We received the letter below from a patient of the Chatsfield Suite who was very impressed with the team and his care.

"I am writing to draw your attention to the excellent service and care I received at the Chatsfield Suite. I recently completed eight sessions of chemotherapy and throughout I was treated with patience, empathy and respect. All the staff were reassuring which was so important as we travelled along our own personal journey.

"We were surprised at how positive the Chatsfield is where everyone is greeted with a smile. That smile is so important because it helps dispel any anxieties and encourages a feeling of trust. It is difficult to name any one individual as everyone showed that same level of commitment, professionalism and caring."

Elective Orthopaedics Quality Improvement Event

Last week a wide range of team members from the elective pathway in orthopaedics participated in a very productive three day Rapid Improvement Event which will improve care for patients referred into the elective knee pathway at DBTH.

A GP, Consultant, CCG colleagues, therapists, clinic staff, admin staff and managers joined us for the full event, with a patient joining us for the second day meant we co-produced the improvement actions.

We started by understanding the current processes and data, and identifying opportunities for increased effectiveness and efficiency, which would result in improved care. The group identified 86 ‘wastes’ in the current process in areas such as waiting, defects, over processing etc and by the end of the QI work the plans that had been developed had addressed nearly all of those. There were so many excellent ideas generated by the team to improve and for elective orthopaedic care that 35+ ideas for improvement were developed.

The areas the team worked on were:• Reviewing what written and verbal information patients are given about their planned surgery and

waiting times.• Developing plans, working towards achieving the 18 week pathway• Development of a streamlined referral pathway for patients which includes triage and treat in one

stop and a virtual clinic to discuss patients, saving them time and journeys to the hospital.• Monitoring and quality checking the reconciliation of clinics to ensure patients can progress more

efficiently through their planned pathway of care.

The teams tested out their ideas, measured the impact, and refined their approach using PDSA (Plan, Do, Study, Act). Staff back in the workplace also contributed their ideas, and helped test out ideas too.

Staff attending the event were enthusiastic about continuing this work going forward. The event sponsors were Mr Ranjit Pande, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who felt that the event was “taking the opportunity to make things even better” and Vikki Redhall, Business Manager, who said “WWe have some realistic achievable goals”. Clear actions for the next 30, 60, and 90 days were agreed to maintain the momentum and to take the ideas forward and continue to measure the benefits. Visual management boards will be set up in the areas so the teams can monitor their progress and continue to involve the team in problem solving and ideas. Members of the Qi team will continue to work with the T&O team with regular QI coaching and support.

ICS announcement

You will recall that the Hospital Services Review, published last May, confirmed that a number of clinical services provided across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw will need to be delivered differently in the medium to long term due to increases in demand, changing care pathways and the availability of some types of healthcare professionals nationally and locally.

Over the past 10 months a number of clinicians from NHS trusts providing hospital services in the Integrated Care System, including our Trust, have been looking at how, together, we need to address these challenges and also make the most of new opportunities to ensure we continue to provide high quality, safe care for our patients and a positive work experience for our staff.

Some excellent early work has been completed but it is clear that to move to the next stage, a more formalised structure needs to be put in place to support our on-going plans. As a result it has been agreed that there will be ‘Hosted Networks’ established for the following five services. We have agreed that each of the NHS hospital trusts in the region will be a host of one of the networks:• Gastroenterology – Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust• Maternity – The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust• Paediatrics – Sheffield Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust• Stroke – Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust • Urgent and Emergency Care – Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust did take part in the Hospital Services Review, but will not host a network in the first instance, as they also share services with NHS organisations outside of South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. We will continue to work closely with Chesterfield.

The role of the host is to coordinate the running of the Network. It is a supportive role. The host will not be involved in providing services at other trusts, nor will it take on any clinical or financial accountability for other trusts’ services. The host will provide leadership through convening and facilitating shared working between the trusts.

The focus of each network will be on how trusts can work together to:• Standardise the approaches that we take to patient care and pathways where appropriate• Ensure our workforce in the short, medium and longer term meets the needs of patients and care

delivery• Look at how we can reduce or remove the barriers that prevent us from working together more easily

as organisations Being the host for a service will not provide our Trust with an advantage or disadvantage when it comes to investment or resource allocation, beyond support for running the network itself. All services will remain equally important and there will be an emphasis on ensuring that all organisations are offering high quality care, and all staff have equal access to career development opportunities.

Over the coming weeks there will be more information about the membership of each network and how staff from across the partner trusts can become involved in the different elements of work which will be driven by the networks.

If you would like more information or would like to get involved, get in touch with our Medical Director team, Mr Sewa Singh, Dr Tim Noble and Mr Willy Pillay.

Dementia strategy launchOn Thursday 23 May, the Trust will be launching its four-year Dementia Strategy, including many projects which support people with dementia and their families whilst they are receiving our care.

At the heart of the strategy is our vision of becoming a person-centred organisation. This will bring out a substantial change in culture, but will have positive outcomes for our patients, relatives, visitors and staff.

ReSPECT process launching on 1 April The new national Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment is launching in our locality on 1 April and we want you to be ready to embrace it.

An eLearning package to support the implementation of ReSPECT at DBTH has now been uploaded to the Trust’s eLearning platform.

This eLearning package contains specific details about the overall process and the forms. It is designed for staff that will be expected to complete the forms but the information contained in the package is useful to anyone who wants or needs to have a deeper understanding of the ReSPECT process.

To find this package please search for 272 ReSPECT. Dependant on how quickly you read, the package takes around 30 minutes to complete and includes a short assessment.

All medical staff and qualified ACP’s are required to complete this before the go-live date of 1 April.

There are some supported eLearning sessions being held in the education centre for staff who have difficulty accessing or using online learning but these sessions are not face-to-face alternatives to completion of the eLearning.

Further information for ward/clinic staff will be circulated by your managers in the next few weeks. For additional information, and some useful video clips on ReSPECT, please go to www.respectprocess.org.uk.

If, after completing the package, you need further advice or support, please contact Nicola Vickers, Resuscitation and Manual Handling Lead on ext. 642227 or email [email protected].

Dementia Strategy

Collaborative working, with people with dementia and their families, and across the health and social care community as a whole is required to put the recommendations, projects and plans of this strategy into place. Our aim is to stand at the forefront of delivery of excellent care for people living with dementia; by building on the work the Trust has already done we can achieve this.

You can come and hear about some of the projects that the strategy will encompass at a launch event on 23 May, 12.30 to 3.15pm. For the full agenda please click here.
