A very warm welcome to the 2017/18 season to all
our returning paddlers. If you are new to our sport,
then I wish you an enjoyable season and a long
and happy relationship with our great sport.
The new season sees some significant changes.
Whilst we are holding most of our major Metro
regattas at SIRC again this year, we have some
surprises in the pipeline with different racing chal-
lenges and events. We hope to see more clubs
from Regional Areas compete at this first class
facility either as a club in their own right, or with a
Waratahs Squad.
The DBNSW Board has made a significant and
planned investment to buy all 13 of the Buk stand-
ard format boats used at the recent Australian
Championships. These boats are basically brand
new with very little usage and will be stored at
SIRC for major regattas events.
We will be holding Road Shows again this year
with every club having the opportunity to meet our
staff and Board Members and we will be discuss-
ing many of the topics raised in your feedback. In
addition we will be running the Level 1 AusDBF
Officials Course at each 2 day Road Show work-
shop. Officials are a most important aspect of our
sport and each and every club should have them.
As our sport develops, we have a duty to keep up
to date with the sporting environment and the con-
stant change within it. We have recruited 2
‘interns’ from University to work on projects involv-
ing Communications and Planning, thus helping
us with the future vision and direction for our
sport.
Our Strategic Plan is now mostly complete with a
recent Board meeting confirming our immediate
Strategic Issues and our plans to accomplish them
with succession planning being an integral aspect
of the way forward.
As always, our thanks and gratitude must go to
all our volunteers who make the sport happen.
All clubs should be mindful of this and ensure
that they have volunteers to help at each and
every regatta. If you are contemplating the volun-
teer role, then I would encourage you to do so
since the statement ‘if we have no volunteers,
we have no regattas’ is quite literally true. Should
you want to, then progression to the Officials role
is a worthy and enjoyable ‘career path’ which I
can personally endorse.
Finally the annual fees and charges for the
2017/18 season have been set so we are able to
meet the operational costs that we incur through
membership, events, staff, volunteers, the office,
facilities and in particular our boats and equip-
ment. I’m happy to report that they show only
modest increases.
Regards,
Geoff

The following updates should be noted by all clubs;
After receiving feedback on regattas during the 16/17 season DBNSW is excited to an-nounce the introduction of the Summer Challenge which is currently scheduled for 10th of December at SIRC, Penrith. This regatta will involve brand new types of racing, replacing the standard sprint style race. Further details on the types of racing that will take place will be released in the coming months. A consequence of introducing this new regatta means that the Regatta Series will be reduced from the typical 4 races down to 3 for the 17/18 sea-son.
With the recent changes to the IDBF and AusDBF race rules, specifically in the mixed cate-gory, DBNSW will not be implementing any changes for the 2017/18 season. The Competi-tion & Technical Committee will however review the current rules and changes during the season and determine whether or not changes will be made to the NSW bylaws in time for the 2018/19 season.
After trialling the Senior C category at DBNSW organised regattas the class will not return for the 17/18 season.
In previous years clubs had the opportunity to run their own regattas as either accredited or sanctioned events. From the 2017/18 season and beyond regattas may only be applied for and operated as accredited events. Clubs will be responsible for ensuring all accredited cri-teria is met (available in the Regatta Hosting Handbook). Those applying clubs unable to fulfil all criteria may be asked to provide additional information in order for their regatta to be approved by DBNSW.

RACING UPDATES

Dragon Boats NSW relies heavily on the support of its community in running regattas. We are now calling on the assistance of volunteers for the upcoming 2017 - 2018 season.
Volunteering is a great way to support your club and the DBNSW community.
Those interested in volunteering at our regattas can complete an online nomination form here.
In the weeks leading up to a regatta selected volunteers will be sent an email requesting confir-mation of their attendance. A final email will be sent to volunteers the week prior to the regatta containing a job allocation roster and further information.
Transport & accommodation is arranged for volunteers and officials at regattas that are of sig-nificant distance from Sydney (i.e. Wagga Wagga, Orange).
Some of our regular officials Dana, Elissa, Pearl and Mary
Dragon Boats NSW will be continuing to work with AusDBF to organise their accredited coach-ing and officials course throughout New South Wales during the 2017–18 season.
Keep an eye on the DBNSW website and the event calendar for upcoming dates and further in-formation over the coming months.
