DBCA CHiMERA Thoda Hatt Ke!!
Vol 3 No.3 Don Bosco College of Agriculture, Sulcorna-Goa 01 August,2016
DBCA Girls’ T.E.A.M. makes a debut in inter-collegiate Table Tennis By Shivama Oppari , S.Y. B.Sc.(Agri)
TEAM captain Priyanka Parab plays against the star player of P.E.S. College in the Goa University tournament at SAG Indoor Stadium, Campal-Panaji-Goa.
The long awaited table tennis women’s match was played on 27 July, 2016, in Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) Indoor Stadium in,
Campal- Panjaji, Goa. Our team which included Priyanka Parab, Diksha Yevadkar, Shweta Gaonkar, Vrundan Parab and Snehal
Phaldessai , all of whom practiced the whole week since the third semester began on 18 July and got set to play the game. The first
match against PES Ravi Naik College, Farmagudi-Ponda, was played by Priyanka and she won the opening match. Later, Shweta and
Diksha also played their respective matches. They put all their efforts and the skills that they had learnt from scratch in those 7 days and
they fought their battle till the end. Though we were able to win only one match, it was more than winning the trophy as it was the first
time that the girls had played this game, except Priyanka who has represented her school before.
We are very proud of our team. They have proven that nothing is impossible if one has the determination and the will to achieve the goal
that one has set.
Participation is more than winning!!
By Liza Pinheiro, F.Y. B.Sc.(Agri)
What a sporty day! On 27 July, 2016, the Goa
University’s Inter-Collegiate Table Tennis
Tournament was held at the Campal
Multipurpose hall, Panaji. Our recently
established college participated in this event for
the first time.
Our journey began at 9:20 a.m from the college
at Sulcorna, in Quepem taluka. Everyone was
quie and apprehensive because our players ;
Priyanka, Shweta, Diksha, Snehal and
Vrundan were playing for first time at the
college level and, except for Priyanka, they
were playing Table Tennis for the first time in
their life!
Like the food is tasteless without salt, similarly
a tournament is dull without the cheers. To
cheer the players was a contingent of Freshers
and Second Year students who were
accompanied by Miguel Braganza Sir and
Ma'am Glenda Carvalho.
Our journey had a pause for a while at Ambaji-
Margao. We visited the East-West nursery so as
to divert our minds from anxiety by observing
and learning about beautiful, colourful and
pleasing flowers. Later, we stopped at Goa
University, where our teachers submitted
documents for eligibility of out-of-state students
and brought forms for registration of new
students. We then visited the Don Bosco
Provincial House, Odxel, which is the nerve-
centre of all Don Bosco Communities in Goa
and the Konkan. It was afternoon!! Our hungry
stomachs had to be fed. To feed our need we
had delicious traditional Goan fish-curry-rice at
NIA's restaurant, St.Inez.
Finally, we reached our destination...Campal!!!
Our hearts raced..players anxiously determined
and cheerleaders all set for cheers... It was
really amazing and wonderful to watch them
play. It needs a lot of guts to try something for
the first time. It is said that the first time is a
rehearsal for a better next. Even though our girls
didn't win but they really proved that
participation is more than winning.
To drive out dismal thoughts, our fun-loving
Miguel sir gave everyone an ice-cream and sev
puri treat. With him, life is a celebration. Our
journey back to DBCA was really melodious
and entertaining as it ended with Antakshari
competition between the students in two groups.
ECSTASY is a feeling that one feels
when feeling a feeling that one feels one
has never felt before!
TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT
by Priyanka Parab, S.Y. B.Sc.(Agri)
Our college always tries to bring up talents in its
students, whether it be in games or studies. On
27th
July, 2016 a team of 5 girls: Diksha
Yevadkar, Shweta Gaonkar, Snehal
Phaldesai, Vrundan Parab and I, all from S.Y.
B.Sc (Agri) class participated in inter-collegiate
table tennis tournament of the Goa University
held at SAG indoor stadium Campal-Panjim.
The academic year began only on 18 July and
the F.Y. B.Sc(Agri) students could not
participate as they are not yet registered at Goa
University.
In the first round, our team was against P.E.S.
Ravi Naik College Farmagudi-Ponda wherein I
won the first game. All the other girls are first
time players in table tennis. Although they
played hard, they could not win the sets this
time. The team was formed only because
Miguel Braganza Sir encouraged the students to
give it their best shot and Santosh Patil Sir
agreed to train them. Present to cheer and
support the team were our Assistant Professors
of Horticulture Ma’am Glenda Carvalho and
Miguel Braganza Sir along with 6 students
from S.Y. B.Sc (Agri) and 5 students from F.Y.
B.Sc.(Agri). Even DBFHS alumnus, Olivio,
who drove us to the venue and back, cheered us
as we played. We played to the best of our
ability. After the match we got the treat from Sir
Miguel of Natural’s ice cream and some even
had shev batata puri before we came back
having lots of fun along the way to Sulcorna.
Life Win some, Lose some Dyinral Correia, F.Y. B.Sc.(Agri) Life..! is all about participation whether in
reality or reel life.. Only if we do, we can come
to know the real potential we have in us… and
that’s what our girls in DBCA did this week…!
It definitely is an overwhelming feeling for us
in DBCA to have the strength of facing
challenges for the first time. Winning is not
everything for us; our capability and our
determination can change the perspective
towards our work. We keep participating to gain
knowledge and experience so that in the future,
we can grow better and finally be the
best!
Oh! What a day!! –
by Gopika Shibu F.Y. B.Sc.(Agri)
It was one of the memorable days in my
life. One full day with my friends to support and
cheer our college table tennis team….
Wonderful experience…. I never experienced
anything like this before. Whenever we played
everyone’s mind was filled with the essence of
cheering the players…OUR players! Many
hearts beat with single rhythm. It was a
wonderful experience for me to know more
about the Goan culture. It was a enjoyable,
cheerful and informative journey…. .
DEBUT match
by Andrea Cheradil, S.Y B.Sc.(Agri)
Success follows the one who tries. Great
athletic stars have also tasted defeat in their in
their career and inspire us to give our best in
everything we do. Such is the tale of the DBCA
debut TT team. The captain, Priyanka Parab,
who is an experienced player, set the standard
for the match when she defeated her opponent
in the first match. However her teammates
could not achieve the same due to lack of
experience but showed exemplary
determination and their will to win. The team
has great potential and the manner the students
played the game proved that DBCA is filled
with lots of talent, which needs to be spotted
and channelized to produce great sportspersons.
The coach, Santosh Patil has played a major
role in this achievement. His experience in the
field and enthusiasm to coach us is a real
resource for DBCA.
Miguel Braganza, the person behind the
establishment of the agriculture college, is also
the reason for the formation of this team. His
keen interest in the students, the gathering of
the team and providing them with the required
facilities to learn and pick the skills is another
aspect in this success. He is proving it another
time that he is a gem for DBCA.
The debut team members were accompanied by
Miguel sir, Glenda ma’am and their classmates
as well as juniors, who did their best to motivate
the players. This small squad of cheerleaders
helped the players to overcome their fear of
defeat which would have weakened the
performance of the debutant team.
The game wasn’t the only thing that happened
that day. Two stops were made at the Goa
University and Provincial House of Don Bosco
at Odxel. The lucky chaps spotted a peacock at
Odxel and a luckier few clicked selfies with it,
which is sure to get trending on social sites.
After the match the team and the cheer squad,
including the teachers raided Natural’s to chill
out with the taste of natural fruits. For those
who were still not satisfied with nature there
was a chaat stall nearby. They had their fill of
shev puri and then began the return rollercoaster
ride with the game of antakshari.
Thus was the first outing where F.Y. and S.Y.
students went out together which makes it even
more historical. The Lucky 44 Freshers are an
enthusiastic lot and another gem in the bag for
DBCA alongside the “Fortunate Forty” as we
call ourselves in the first batch at DBCA. It was
a memorable day in all means, and hats off to
the makers and players of DBCA debut TT
team.
42 Hours
By Joswin D’Souza, F.Y. B.Sc.(Agri)
‘There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so
great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation
of something tomorrow’…
The second week at the college began with the
football practices early in the morning. Lot
many faces of the students carried a brilliant
charm as they had just visited their houses
during the week end. This week introduced to
us many new faces such as Assistant Professor
Ms. Ashika Sali, as well as students Pratibha
Misal and Amrut Mallik who joined DBCA.
The classes have begun with the full swing
giving the students no time to breathe!!!
(Actually there is lot of time to breathe) The big
class of forty four has been divided into two
halves as per the initials, thus creating batch 1
and batch 2. This week we had some of our
second year students participating in the table
tennis tournament, thus representing us and
making our college known among so many
colleges in Goa. During this week the students
have learnt a lot with regard to theory as well as
practical and are grateful to the teachers for
their sacrifice and care in sharing the knowledge
that they possess.
To find what you seek in the road of life, the
best maxim of all is that which says: “Leave no
stone unturned’’. This remains our motto for the
coming week as we just bump in to the
weekend.
This caterpillar will grow into a butterfly.
Let’s be eco sensitive…
Ryan Mascarenhas F.Y. B.Sc.(Agri)
Many times we take things for granted that we
see in our environs. Nature is really wonderful
and full of marvels. When we admire it, it
teaches us many lessons, specially the lessons
of mutual understanding, hard work, sacrifice,
thoughtfulness for the betterment of others, etc.
This struck me when we the B-2 batch of F.Y
B.Sc.(Agri) went for a study tour during our
practical hour on 28 July. We were
accompanied by Miguel Braganza Sir and
Miss Pratiksha Dabholkar. Both of our
professors were enlightening and enriching our
knowledge about different plants that we came
across, by informing us about their scientific
and local names and their medicinal or other
importance like pollution control, timber, etc.
On our way we saw red ants preparing their
home and students wanted to destroy it but Miss
Pratiksha Dabholkar informed us about the
struggle that they take to build it and its
significance; by knowing that we were reluctant
to destroy such things hence forth. Later when
Miguel Sir was teaching us about how to take
care of rose saplings, we had an encounter with
earthworms. One of the students started telling
us about the significance of the earthworms and
we took outmost care not to harm such creatures
which benefit us in different ways.
