The Demoulas Foundations

The Demoulas Foundation and the Telemachus and Irene Demoulas

Family Foundation are the charitable arms of the Market Basket

Company and the Arthur T. Demoulas family that operate 71 stores

across New England, providing employment to over 25,000 people.

The foundations were founded by Telemachus and Irene Demoulas,

the parents of Market Basket’s CEO Arthur T. Demoulas.

In keeping with the Market Basket philosophy of creating opportuni-

ties for people and building community, the foundations reflect a story of compassionate stewardship, with an

eye always toward low-profile charitable acts.

It is estimated that together these foundations have quietly donated more than $44 million dollars over approxi-

mately ten years to area non-profits, local churches, healthcare organizations, educational institutions and com-

munity groups. As noted in a recent Lowell Sun article, these donations don’t make headlines and aren’t to be

found on any company website. However, their many grateful recipients know and will never forget that the De-

moulas family foundations supported them and the people in need they serve.

Among the foundations’ many beneficiaries are:

The Lowell Plan is one the largest recipients of Demoulas charities’ support over the past decade. The Lowell

Plan has used this support to help build a strategic plan and stimulate economic-development for the City of

Lowell. According to the Lowell Plan’s Executive Director Jim Cook, “The growth of the Market Basket Supermar-

kets is a remarkable story of entrepreneurship. As a major employer, developer, and philanthropist, CEO Arthur

T. Demoulas shares his resources and effects change. He makes a positive and lasting impact in this area—one

person, one neighborhood at a time. His successful development projects and renovations are catalysts for other

efforts. Artie T., believes in Lowell, and we believe in him.”

Health care organizations such as Caring Partners, keeping heart and lung patients healthy and able to live at

home; Merrimack Valley Hospice, providing comfort care and palliative services to patients facing serious ill-

nesses; the Lowell Community Health Center, extending high quality, affordable health care to children and

adults of all ages; D’Youville Life & Wellness Community, helping elders of all economic means access compas-

sionate, quality care; as well as Lowell General Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, St. Jude’s Research Hospital,

Boston’s Shriners Hospital, New England Baptist Hospital, Anna Jacques Community Health, Massachusetts Gen-

eral Hospital, and Winchester Hospital.

Youth groups including the Boys and Girls Clubs in Lowell, Lawrence and Concord and another 15 from Salem, NH

to Worcester, MA; New Hampshire and Massachusetts-based YMCAS; and Camp Harbor View and the Metropolis

of Boston Camp & Retreat Center. Combined, these donations provide thousands of young people with educa-

tional, recreational, social and religious opportunities, enabling them, especially those at risk, to reach their full

potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Lowell’s Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Joe Hungler

says, “The Demoulas family, which as we saw this summer encompasses the entire company, are incredibly gen-

erous philanthropists who contribute to the community in so many ways. They volunteer at our organizations,

provide teens their first jobs and deliver low food prices with high quality to families. They always remember

their roots and understand the importance of community and treating others with dignity.”

Educational institutions including Lowell Catholic High School, Lawrence Catholic Academy, Immaculate Concep-tion School, Ste Jeanne d’Arc School, Hellenic American Academy, Notre Dame Academy, Middlesex Community College, Rivier University, Hellenic College Holy Cross, Bentley University, Boston College, and Merrimack College. “Middlesex Community College has benefitted tremendously from the generosity of the Demoulas Foundations and Arthur T. Demoulas,” says MCC’s Executive Vice President Jay Linnehan. “Their contributions to the MCC Foundation and support for the college’s Paul Sullivan Leadership Institute and The Celebrity Forum Speaker se-ries have significantly increased scholarship awards for many MCC students who struggle to finance their educa-tion. Their philanthropy provides MCC students with opportunities to achieve success and reach their goals.”

Non-profits, including the Middlesex Innovation and Leadership Enterprise, Lazarus House, Lowell Association for

the Blind, New Hampshire Food Bank and Lowell Visiting Nurses Association/Hospice.

And civic organizations such as the Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce that strengthens the economic and

cultural ties between the United States and Greece fostering commercial and trade relations between us; the

Whistler House and the Gloucester Fishermen Athletic Association, among others.

Roy T. Johnson

Roy T. Johnson has enjoyed a long and successful life, both personally and professionally. He built real estate and insurance businesses, served his country in World War II, developed lifelong friendships with people of all ages both on and off the golf course, traveled the world with his wife and soul-mate, Evelyn, and continues to share deeply in the lives of his chil-dren and grandchildren. Roy has been generous, giving both financial support and time to many local organizations. He was a valued Trustee and Board member of Saints Medical Center (and its predecessor, St. Joseph’s Hospital), and D’You-ville, offering his valuable insights into real estate, community needs and fiscal planning and growth. In the mid-90s, Roy was presented with a major challenge when his wife Evelyn developed Alzheimer’s. Eventually, Evie came to stay at D’Youville. It was here that Roy’s devotion to his wife deepened into a passion for making a difference in senior elder care. He joined D’Youville’s Board and be-came involved with the following initiatives: Development of the Bruyere Gardens Affordable Housing complex, which is a national model of independent

senior care living. Creation and launch of D’Youville’s Annual Golf Tournament that raises tens of thousands of dollars annually

for D’Youville’s Senior Care programs and the D’Youville Women’s Golf Tournament that held its inaugural event this spring.

Fundraising for and purchase of the D’Youville Bus which established permanent transportation for patient/resident field trips.

and fundraising to build a balcony for Alzheimer’s and memory loss residents in the Special Care Unit.

“The balcony makes it possible for people otherwise unable to regularly go outside, to experience fresh air, sun-shine, breezes and have an outdoor experience,” says Roy’s daughter. “My dad translated the love he had for my mother into action. He could empathize with the memory loss residents and their families and set out to help them through D’Youville. He has loved being a part of the growth here.” Without a doubt, Roy T. Johnson has brought positive changes through his involvement at D’Youville, improving the quality of life for all of the staff, residents, families and care providers who provide or seek compassionate care at D’Youville.

D’Youville Life and Wellness Community was founded in 1960 by the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa, and has been

serving the senior population in Greater Lowell for more than 50 years. Our 75-acre campus offers: skilled long

term nursing care, an Adult Day Health program, short-term post-operative rehabilitation, 63 units of affordable

apartments, hospice care and an 84 bed center for the care of memory-loss patients.

Our Center for Advanced Therapy, which opened 2012, provides an in-patient, short-term therapeutic resource

for patients recovering from orthopedic or other surgeries, as well as respiratory and cardiac rehabilitation.

An Affordable Housing with Supportive Services and Assisted Living Residence complex is planned to open on the

D’Youville campus in the Fall of 2015. When completed, it will make available round the clock care for residents

who need some level of support, but not the more intensive 24/7 skilled nursing care of a nursing home resi-

dence.
