Principal’s News - Mr Graeme Holmes

Parent Teacher Interviews

Term one is rapidly coming to a close. This means that interim reports have been written and Parent Teacher Interviews are about to take place. Interviews are scheduled for next Wednesday after school and Thursday morning. You can make a booking online using your XUNO log-in.

Parent Teacher Interviews provide an excellent opportunity for you to meet with each of the teachers, discuss your child’s progress, find out where you can assist and show interest and involvement in your child’s learning. It is an opportunity for you to engage with the school around student learning and curriculum. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on Wednesday or Thursday. If you would like to meet with me over any matter, either make an online booking or drop in to see me during the parent teacher interview times.

The Rebuild Program

The next steps in our Rebuild $10m program are currently in progress. Today, School Council President Tim Ferrier and I are in Melbourne presenting preliminary plans to an independent committee. Acceptance of our plans will mean we can move rapidly to the next step which is schematic design. Some preliminary ideas have been floated for the schematic design. These ideas have been presented to some staff and students for feedback. The proposal is based around a central courtyard theme with new buildings for food technology, art, science, resources, classrooms and music. The current technology rooms of wood and metal will be relocated to the current D-Block along with auto and ICT. It is also pleasing to note that two students have joined our Rebuild Committee – Ryan Adkins and Ceilidh Wratten. Ryan and Ceilidh are representing the SRC and will provide reports to the SRC and students.

School Council

Congratulations to Tim Ferrier, Terry Judd and Peter D’Onghia on their appointment to School Council as parent representatives and to Steve MacPhail and Lisa Gunders on their appointments as staff representatives. School Council held its final meeting for the 2015/16 Council on Wednesday followed by the first meeting of the 2016/17 Council.

Year 7 Camp

WOW! What an experience. From orienteering to rock climbing, flying fox to canoeing, and high ropes courses to raft making, the challenges never stopped. A fear of heights was a tough one but ever so proudly the students conquered their fears with the support and encouragement of their peers and teachers.

Above: Zari on the flying fox

The heat on the first day prevented many from getting a quality sleep, and there were a few tired eyes at breakfast Wednesday morning. Additionally, Mr Coleman led the students on a night walk around the camp and all were involved in Daylesford Secondary College’s Talent Show. Food was excellent and the camp staff was fantastic. One slight mystery for the camp was the “unknown shoe tying group,” which was eventually uncovered at the talent show.

By Friday, we were all ready for the trek home after what had been a challenging, exciting and unforgettable camp. Thank you to the staff and parents who helped out and all of the students, YOU WERE FANTASTIC!

ART

Over the course of term 1, the Year 11 Studio Arts students have been involved in a community art project at Daylesford’s RSL. Local artist Irene Salmont has been gradually beautifying the space behind the RSL. To add to the garden, Irene approached the college to invite some students to stencil doves onto the plain brick wall. Ms Low’s Year 11’s spent three Friday mornings with Irene down at the RSL and completed the project last Friday 11th March.

It was great to see senior art students get out of the classroom and the finished stencil wall looks great.

Daylesford Secondary College students were invited to speak at Daylesford’s International Women’s Day On Thursday the 3rd of March four Daylesford Secondary College students were invited to speak at Daylesford’s International Women’s Day event at the town hall. Beth Olver, Annie Williams and Ngahuia Thomson delivered a spoken word poem, trying to demystify assumptions about Feminism, retagging it ‘Humanism’. They conveyed the message that Feminism isn’t just about protecting women’s rights, it’s about protecting human rights, for all genders. Isabella Thomas also delivered a speech, speaking independently about the dangers of phrases such as “I’m not like other girls”. She expressed how proud she is to be like other girls, in that they all have the potential to achieve great things.

Mary-Anne Thomas and Mary Delahunty were guests at the event, both of whom requested copies of the girl’s speeches. Ms Delahunty hopes to post the speeches on an upcoming independent website, ‘For Her Museum’,

recording the ideas and achievements of women throughout the ages. Also, Ms Thomas informed the girls that she would quote from their speeches the next time she is addressing parliament.

Beth, Isabella, Annie, Mary Delahunty & Ngahuia

Overall, the girls’ received very positive responses from those who attended the event and, as a college, we are very proud of their efforts.

Science

There are a number of competitions and extension activities available in science. To mention a few, there is the Sleek Geek Competition which we have entered in previous years. This requires students to make a short video that explains a scientific concept. There is the Australian National Chemistry Quiz which all our senior chemistry students will be participating in on July 21 and of course the Big Science Competition will be on in May when every student that takes part gets a science-pun sticker plus a certificate and the chance to win movie, iTune and Google Play vouchers. Please tell your science teacher if you would like to have a go at any of these or come along to the Science Help session on Monday lunchtime in P1 for more information.

Only Year 7s to receive vaccinations in 2016

Parents of older children may be aware that in

previous years, vaccinations were given to

students in Years 7 to 10. However, the vaccine

Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis

combined vaccine (dTp) – one

dose

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

vaccine – three doses

Varicella (chicken pox) vaccine –

authorised to provide parent/guardian contact

details to local councils for this purpose.

the vaccine consent card booklet being sent out

by Hepburn Shire Council. You need to read,

complete and return Part A regardless of

whether your child is being vaccinated at

school.

To learn more about the Secondary School

Vaccine Program, the vaccines, the diseases

they protect against, or how you can prepare

your child for vaccination, go to

Geography

Students in Year 9 & 10 ‘World of Geography’ class travelled to Mt Franklin, 10 km north of Daylesford as part of their study into land forms. Mt Franklin is an ‘extinct’ volcano with an unusual breached cone, allowing easy access to the crater floor. It was a significant site for the Dja Dja Wurrong people. We explored the crater and climbed the inner cone to reach the summit. With the generous support of the local land owner w walked onto the adjacent hill known as 'Lady Franklin'. With a striking 310 degree view, students were able to view and sketch the topography of the region, including features such as Wombat Hill, Kooroocheang and Mt Alexander. It was a unique opportunity. The field trip was enjoyable and memorable. Thanks to Mr Jones for driving us.

NURSING AND/OR MIDWIFERY Division 1 nursing involves a three-year degree at university while Division 2 requires an 18-month diploma. Some students who wish to study nursing also wish to study midwifery. This can either be done through a double degree in nursing and midwifery which will take 4 years or by studying nursing and then doing an 18-month course in midwifery. The double degree is offered at Deakin, La Trobe and Monash Universities. The good news for Year 12 students is that Victoria University (St Albans campus) is introducing this double degree in 2017. The aim is to address the challenges in maternity care. Increasing rates of health conditions such as mental health disorders, diabetes and obesity have increased the complexity of care for women. ACU Melbourne also offers Bachelor of Midwifery (without Nursing). There are many other combinations of double degrees with nursing, providing more employment and interest options upon graduation. For example, ACU offers Nursing/Paramedics at the Ballarat campus and Deakin offers Nursing/Public Health and Health Promotion, Nursing/Psychological Science (and also a single degree called Nursing (Clinical Leadership)).

Sabre’s Cause

The Section 8 4x4 club would like to introduce you to Sabre, Sabre is a regular Daylesford youth, getting ready for Primary school…… With one twist…. He has been diagnosed with Horizontal Jerk Nystagmus, Stationary Night Blindness, Retinal dystrophy and Retinitis Pygmitosa. Sabre is going blind before he has seen the world. After hearing about the costs associated with these illnesses, cost with Brail machinery and etc., Section 8 were emotionally moved into action, in a big way. We are doing the biggest lap that can possible done done in Victoria, we are going to drive the entire cost and border of this great state, stopping at as many places as we can to raise money for this worthy cause. We like you to help us bring some normalcy to this young life, help us smooth the path for Sabre.
