Day of the Dead In Celebration of Animals Research with daily warm-up activity In your sketchbook, discuss the background of Dia de los Muertos Draw and write about symbols used in art for this Mexican holiday Design 1. Decide on one animal you would like to celebrate and represent in your drawing. Reasons for choosing this animal may include: A personal connection, like a former or present pet A concern about its future or past extinction Your spirit animal, etc. 2. Research the animal’s skeleton in a dynamic pose; consider movement or twisted perspective (e.g. side view body, but frontal view face) and positive/negative space. 3. Draw the skeleton on your paper lightly with pencil. You may have to simplify complex bone structures. This drawing has to be a minimum of 8” in one direction. 4. Research a realistic (not cartoon image) and detailed outline around the skeleton to represent the entire body contour. Draw lightly with pencil. 5. Choose an additional 3 symbols associated with Dia de los Muertos and arrange around the animal in an interesting composition. Note: Use overlapping and different size for each symbols. Place images diagonal to each other and let them come off the page on at least three sides. Draw with pencil first. Optional Extra Credit: Typography. You may include written text contained in a text “ribbon”. The text needs to relate to your design and be completed neatly and evenly with consistent font (pencil first) 6. Fill space around bones with Sharpie. Leave bones white. 7. Use Sharpie, colored pencil or marker (not both) to color your design. Note: Use mostly warm colors with little purple, green, or blue. Color needs to be flat, opaque, and very intense/bright (no shading) 8. Fill in background. This background depends on the detail of your drawing so far. If you have a very busy detailed drawing, keep the background simple (e.g. horizon line 1/3 from top or bottom and color only). If your drawing so far is fairly simple and easy to read, create a more indricate background (e.g. similar to your zentangle project but with Dia de los Muertos related patterns)
