HISTORICAL NOTE

The Lazy B Cattle Ranch was founded in 1880 on the Arizona-New Mexico

border southeast of Duncan, Arizona by Henry Clay (“H. C.”) Day, Sandra Day O’

Connor’s paternal grandfather. Henry Clay Day came west to Pasadena, California after

meeting and marrying Alice Edith Hilton in Wichita, Kansas. Day then took advantage

of an opportunity he just could not refuse, bought a 300 square mile tract of land in the

Arizona territory for a small sum and bought 6,000 head of Mexican cattle from the

Terrazas ranch in northern Mexico. Those 6,000 cattle were branded with the Lazy B,

which is one of the oldest Arizona brands in the continuous ownership of the same

family. After discovering that his foremen were stealing cattle from him, Day decided to

move his family to the ranch in order to look after the ranch himself.

In 1908, H. C. Day partnered the Lazy B Ranch with Sam and Walter Foster. H.

C. died in 1921 after handing over the ownership of the Day property to his wife Alice

Day to avoid complications. Alice, unfortunately followed her husband shortly after

in1926. Sam Foster turned over the settlement of the ranch to the Alice E. Day Estate,

which led directly into the hands of Harry Day.

Henry (“Harry”) Alfred Day was the fifth child born to H. C. and Alice on

December 11, 1898. Harry came back to the ranch from attending college at Stanford

University to find the ranch in serious legal and financial problems with the Foster

brothers. The matter went to federal court and was eventually settled by giving the Foster

brothers clear title to all the farmland. A new corporation, owned by the Day family,

entitled Lazy B Cattle Company, handled the financial responsibilities of the old

partnership.

In 1926, in buying from a cattle dealer named Willis Wilkey in El Paso, Texas,

Harry Day met Wilkey’s daughter Ada Mae and eloped with her after their courtship in

1927. The ranch at that time was quite rough living with on the newly married couple

and whatever ranch hands lived on the property at the time. Three years after their

marriage, Ada Mae gave birth to the first of the couple’s three children, Sandra on March

26, 1930. Ann would follow a full eight years later in 1938 and Alan in 1939.

The Day family took advantage of summer breaks to go on long trips such as to

Alaska, Mexico and every state capital west of the Mississippi, resulting in many

vacation scrapbooks and photographs. During this time period the Lazy B Ranch did

well despite involvement in a few legal disputes throughout the years.

Over it’s many years of operation, the Lazy B Ranch made quite a few

innovations. Harry Day bought Hereford cattle to breed with the original Mexican cattle

his father had bought. Alan then wanted to breed more exotic breeds of cattle with his

father’s Polled Hereford herd although Harry was against it. Alan won Harry over

though with stock that were heavier and negotiated the rough ranch terrain better.

In the late 1970s, Alan Day took over the presidency of the Lazy B Ranch with

Harry Day still taking an active part in business affairs. The company celebrated its

centennial in 1980 with many friends from the Arizona and New Mexico ranching

communities as well as all the members of the Arizona Cattle Growers Association in

attendance. At the time of the centennial, the Lazy B Ranch was the oldest ranch in

Arizona owned continuously by the same family. After many happy days in the cattle

raising business, Harry Day passed away in 1984 and Ada Mae followed him five years

later in 1989.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Sandra Day was born on March 26th, 1930 and would reach the age of eight

before new siblings entered her life. For the first six years of her life, Sandra had little

contact with other children yet became an accomplished ‘cowboy’, agile with a horse,

rifle, branding iron and tractor. Due to the remote location of the ranch, schooling was

not offered close enough for Sandra to attend from the ranch resulting in her attending

private school in El Paso, Texas and living with her maternal grandmother, Maureen

(“Mamie”) Scott Wilkey.

An accelerated student, Sandra was accepted to Stanford University at the age of

sixteen and received a law degree at twenty-two in June 1952. During her law studies at

Stanford, Sandra worked on the Stanford Law Review. Doing research on an article led

her to John Jay O’Connor III, a fellow law student also working on the Review who was a

year behind Sandra in his studies. The couple dated for two years before marrying on

December 20, 1952, a mere six months after Sandra’s graduation from law school.

In June 1953, Sandra and John O’Connor left the United States for Frankfurt,

Germany. John had been drafted into the army to work as a lawyer. Sandra found a job

as a civilian lawyer for the Quartermaster Corps. The couple returned the United States

in 1956 to settle in Phoenix, Arizona. Soon after the couple settled into the city, their

first son, Scott Hampton O’Connor, was born in 1957. Sandra worked part-time

throughout the births of her next two children, Brian in 1960 and Jay in 1962.

As a member of the Republican party, Sandra plunged into political work after the

birth of her last child. She served in a variety of positions and in 1965 went back to work

in the legal profession as state assistant attorney general on a part-time basis, which

turned into a full-time job quickly. In 1966 Sandra was nominated to be an Arizona State

senator by the Arizona Republican party. For Sandra, it was difficult to choose between

her two loves, law and politics. In 1974, O’Connor ended her last legislative session to

return to law. O’Connor ran for trial judge in the Maricopa County Supreme Court and

won the election.

In July 1981, O’Connor was nominated to the United States Supreme Court by

President Ronald Reagan. O’Connor would be the first woman to enter that distinguished

profession and a furor arose over the landmark nomination. In September, O’Connor

underwent three days of Senate confirmation hearings while protestors were stationed

outside over the issue of abortion. Her opinions on abortion concerned many anti-

abortion activists, yet O’Connor was deemed an appropriate candidate for the office and

started the job on September 28th, 1981. O’Connor has since served as a Supreme Court

judge and lives with her husband in Washington, D.C.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The records in the Day Family Papers represent the papers compiled by a family

and business for a century, 1885-1985. The papers were primarily assembled by Harry

and Ada Mae Day as well as by Alan Day when he took over the Lazy B Ranch in the

1970s. The collection includes financial, legal papers and receipts as well as family

documents such as family photographs, correspondence and articles in published

materials relating to prominent members of the family. The records also document

family travel. The collection was housed at the Lazy B Ranch until it was accessioned in

1999 by the Arizona Historical Society. The collection came in essentially two segments,

boxes including Lazy B Ranch records and boxes holding documents concerning only the

Day Family.

Subgroup 1. Lazy B Ranch

Series 1. Correspondence, 1928-1984. This series consists of correspondence not only

to Lazy B Ranch employees but also carbon copies from the Lazy B Ranch, business

cards and telephone messages concerning the everyday functioning of the ranch. Due to

the familial nature of the business, much correspondence may appear personal at the

outset yet refer to business and/or legal matters after one to two paragraphs. If

correspondence refers to business and/or legal matters, the correspondence is filed in

Lazy B Ranch Correspondence. If this is not the case, the correspondence will be located

in Day Family Correspondence.

Series 2. Legal Papers, 1910-1933. This series consists of legal papers involving

various estates, transcripts, transcripts of oral arguments, court orders, court complaints,

deeds, and land leases. Harry Day and the Lazy B Ranch were involved in a number of

legal disputes after the death of H. C. Day. Due to this, a number of court transcripts and

court orders are included in this series.

Series 3. Financial Papers, 1905-1977. This series consists of a variety of financial

papers having to do with the everyday functioning of the Lazy B Ranch. This includes

correspondence, financial statements, expense lists, receipts and records from renovation

and housing projects as well as vehicle overhauls and repair, deposit slips, bank

statements and receipts, land office receipts, payroll ledger and receipts and property sale

notices. Financial statements from other corporations are included in two instances,

Zabyl Corp. and Western Battery and Magneto Co. Tax records are also present

including tax notices and receipts from Greenlee County, Arizona; Pima County,

Arizona; Grant County, New Mexico; Hidalgo County, New Mexico; Maricopa County,

Arizona; and Lordsburg, New Mexico. This series also includes income tax papers from

1936-1959, a taxable income log, tax correspondence, tax notice slips, tax assessment list

and income tax forms. Both Harry and Alan Day, administrators of the Lazy B Ranch

scribbled handwritten notes concerning financial matters and these are also included.

Series 4. Receipts and Ledgers, 1934-1980. This series includes a great many receipts

from an assortment of Lazy B Ranch expenses and are listed by month beginning with

January 1956 through December 1980. Yearly receipts include typed lists of bank

deposits from 1934 through 1979. Receipts for various projects and rental properties are

included along with correspondence concerning those projects and properties. This series

also contains ledgers of sundry analyses, cattle sales, disbursements, and check registers

from the years 1976 through 1977.

Series 5. Livestock Records, 1934-1983. This series consists of a wide range of

materials having to do with livestock management including, correspondence concerning

livestock matters, gestation tables, livestock inventory, livestock registration, various

contracts from 1914 through 1983, a cattle classification report, livestock health records,

papers from the Breeders Association of America (BARZONA), the Arizona Cattle

Growers Association, and the National Cattlemen’s Association. This series also

includes a report on the Bureau of Land Management use of the Range Improvement

Fund as well as a handwritten note on cows rendered in 1950 in Hidalgo County, a

project list and various receipts.

Series 6. Land Management Records, 1957-1984. This series includes US Department

of Interior correspondence to various people in southern Arizona in the years of 1965-

1966. It also includes papers concerning the Lazy B Ranch’s involvement with a cotton

program and a speech from the Public Lands Committee annual meeting.

Series 7. Published Material, 1973-1982. This small series includes a copy of the bill

“National Resource Lands Management Act of 1973” numbered H.R. 5441 93rd

Congress 1st Session and a copy of an article entitled, “The Blue-Green Algae

Aphanaizomenon Flos-Aquae: Man’s Pathway to Energy and Eternity” by Victor H.

Kollman (K.C. Laboratories, 1982).

Series 8. Newspaper Clippings, 1925-1965. Newspaper and magazine clippings are

included in this series. The newspaper clippings include articles on the death of J. H.

Merriam in 1934 who was the Lazy B Ranch attorney as well as various articles on land

management and the law. The magazine clippings are articles concerning horse and

cattle management.

Series 9. Photographs. This series contains photographs taken from the pages of

Scrapbook 1 and are not arranged chronologically. Due to the nature of the collection,

ranch and family photographs are difficult to differentiate, thus photographs in this series

include a combination of family and ranch photographs.

Series 10. Scrapbook. c.1940-c.1970. This series consists of one leather bound

scrapbook containing mostly Lazy B Ranch photographs with some family photographs.

Subgroup 2: W.W. Wilkey

This subgroup’s papers are, by no means, complete and due to this, the various series

within this subgroup contains various documents spanning a number of years.

Series 11. Correspondence, 1925-1965. This series consists of Willis W. Wilkey and

his wife’s, Maureen “Mamie” Scott Wilkey, personal and business correspondence.

Page 11: Day Family Papers, 1885-1985 - Arizona Historical Society€¦ · Day to avoid complications. Alice, unfortunately followed her husband shortly after in1926. Sam Foster turned over

Series 12. Legal Papers, 1912-1959. This series consists of various personal legal

papers including, land contracts and deeds, a court summons, an affidavit, a homestead

application and accompanying receipts and a real estate license belonging to Maureen

Scott Wilkey. Again, the items in this series are not cohesive.

Series 13. Financial Papers, 1909-1958. The bulk of the documents in this series are tax

receipts from various counties in the states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Florida.

Other documents in this series are general land office receipts, insurance papers, stock

certificates and various bank documents such as bank books and cancelled checks.

Series 14. Livestock Records, 1919-1935. This small series contains various chattel

mortgages and one cattle purchase receipt arranged chronologically. These records show

little of the large cattle ranch W. W. Wilkey once owned, which is a clue that these

papers are incomplete.

Series 15. Published Material, 1944. This series contains a copy of the Guaranty of

Home Loans pursuant to Section 501 of the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944,

Public Law 346, 78th Congress, 2nd Session.

Series 16. Photographs, n.d. This series contains four copies of one picture of an

unknown young man and several undeveloped negatives of an unknown family with

unknown dates.

Subgroup 3. Day Family

Series 17. Personal Papers, 1912-1983. The Harry Day Personal Papers make up the

bulk of this series. Harry Day kept a separate folder in the Lazy B Ranch Records

entitled “Harry Day Personal Mementos.” This folder and its subsequent series includes

a variety of personal papers such as correspondence, a pet vaccination record, various

financial records such as a 1895 mortgage release, copies of jokes, poetry with an

unknown author, speeches by his daughter Sandra Day O’ Connor and various newspaper

clippings. The rest of the series consist of two separate meeting minutes. One, minutes

from a Taylor Grazing meeting and the second, minutes from a meeting of the Stanford

Alumnae Association of which Sandra Day O’ Connor was a member in 1979.

Series 18. Correspondence, 1891-1982. The bulk of this collection rests in the years

1981 and 1982 when the Sandra Day O’ Connor was nominated and subsequently

appointed to the Supreme Court. The Days received an onslaught of congratulatory mail

due to these events. Another bulk year is 1925 when Harry Day’s mother wrote him on a

regular basis from California. The series is broken into incoming and outgoing mail and

contains folders for Greeting cards received in 1982, birth and graduation announcements

(note: photographs within birth announcements stayed in the announcement), and

wedding invitations. Any newspaper clippings that were within the correspondence

were copied onto acid-neutral paper and kept with the correspondence. A particularly

fascinating document is the folder titled “Telegram.” This telegram is from Harry Day to

collected from Europe, Asia and the United States. The rest of the series includes two

passports belonging to Harry Day, a map of the United States and visitor’s pamphlet from

Alaska.

Series 22. Financial Papers, 1916-1930. This series contains only a few financial

documents including a 1916 bank book, a voucher for Sears merchandise from 1930, a

small undated receipt and a few handwritten notes concerning financial matters.

Series 23. Ledgers, 1920-1972. The ledgers in this series are, like the financial papers,

quite incomplete. The ledgers include one 1920 address book treated like a day planner,

a household expense ledger from 1938, a taxable income ledger from 1966-1972 and two

long distance telephone record books.

Series 24. Published Material, 1907-1985. The publications in this series cover a wide

variety of subjects accumulated over a lifetime of reading and traveling by Harry and Ada

Mae Day. Travel publications include the Oberamergau Passion Play from

Oberamergau, Germany in 1922, a Rand McNalley Atlas, an undated Mark Twain

Region guide, a book of San Francisco Etchings from 1965, various cruise books and

event programs. Other publications concern ranch life and include a New Mexico Brand

Book from 1934, a Copy of Arizona Climate 1964, a Land Forms Map of the Arizona-

New Mexico Border Region, a book on the control of Arizona Rose Diseases, newsletters

from various cattle raising associations, and cattle raising catalogues as well as a copy of

Public Law 94-579 concerning the use of land in Arizona. Two maps are also included

and have been moved to the main map collection. They are: Flip Low Altitutde High

Speed Training Route Chart of the Western United States from the Department a of

Defense, 1969 and a Geologic map of the Duncan and Canador Peak quadrangles in

Arizona and New Mexico, dated 1965. A Master’s thesis on the development of black

grama in southern New Mexico would also apply to ranch interests. While several

publications are listed above, the bulk of this series lies in with an extensive collection of

popular magazines such as Time and People which cover the nomination of Sandra Day

O’ Connor to the United States Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan in 1981.

Magazines are arranged chronologically and most include one article or mention of Judge

O’ Connor. Other magazines are miscellaneous.

Series 25. Newspaper Clippings, 1934-1985. The newspaper clippings in this series

cover a variety of topics yet the bulk lie in two date areas. The first are the years 1973

and 1974 which cover various actions Sandra Day O’ Connor took in her Arizona State

Senate position. The second significant bulk area is in 1981 with Sandra Day O’

Connor’s nomination to the Supreme Court.

Series 26. Photographs, 1885-1994. The photographs and few negatives in this series

encompass four generations of the Day family.

Series 27. Scrapbooks, c. 1940s-c.1950s. This series contains loose pages of a

scrapbook made for the occasion of Harry and Ada Mae Day’s 50th Wedding Anniversary

in 1977 and one scrapbook owned by Eleanor Day (Harry’s sister) encompassing the

years 1941 through 1950. Eleanor Day’s Scrapbook, entitled Purple Patches, is a travel

scrapbook with pictures from all over the continental United States.

Series 28. Memorabilia, 1959-1982. This series contains achievement certificates

earned by Ada Mae Day such as one earned for flower arranging. This series also

includes a Cowboy Hall of Fame certificate given to Harry Day, a 1982 Ranch Life

Calendar and three sets of men’s cufflinks. Two images, one, a silhouette printed in

Germany and the other a drawing of a young boy by Bill Schumacher.

Series 29. Media, n.d. The media in this series includes a camera with film inside, a

undeveloped film cartridge, two reels of sound recordings and a reel of video tape. It is

unknown what is on this media or what time period they encompass.
