2012 is rapidly approaching. This will be our 25th anniversary yearand plans are well under way for a special programme. Jenny Daystarted DayDreams in 1987. It all began after a fantastic holiday onboard a small ‘gulet’ exploring the spectacular Turkish coastline.Intent on sharing the experience with friends, she returned severaltimes the following year organising her own private charters on thefirst Cevri Hasan. Using the organisational skills that come secondnature to her as a professional public relations consultant and eventsorganiser, she put together several boat parties of friends, colleaguesand journalists. They were so successful that friends told their friends, and the word spread. Her dream of offering a style of holiday, oncethe preserve of the rich and famous, to a wider audience had becomea reality and DayDreams had become a business.

Following her 1987 charter of the first Cevri Hasan, DayDreamshas held exclusivity for the UK on all the Cevri Hasans - the latestbeing Cevri Hasan III, IV and V. They were always in addition tothe myriad choice of boats available for exclusive private charters, which now include many superior de-luxe gulets. Family groupsand friends (many of whom choose DayDreams to celebrate areunion or anniversary) are all regular travellers with the company.More recently, a tailor-made service was introduced to enabletravellers to combine a stay on land (whether guided tour or hotelstay) with their charter.

The concept of bringing together mixed groups of individuals andcouples into ‘schooner parties’, enabling single travellers inparticular to experience life on board a privately chartered boat, continues to be an important feature of the business. In 1992, CevriHasan III was launched following close collaboration between herowners and Jenny Day over a design specifically suited to theSchooner Parties. She continues to lead a few of these uniqueholidays each summer. Escorted land tours were introduced in 2000,all now featured under the ‘Small Group Programme’.

Our close attention to detail - both before and during the holiday, has ensured the continuing success of the business. As experts inthe area, Jenny Day and the DayDreams team, both at the UK officeand in Turkey, can advise clients about every aspect of their holiday. We can make suggestions on the itinerary, the food, the flights andthe most appropriate boat. We advise on which route is best forsailing or archaeological sites, the forestry trails for walkers, and atwhich hotel or pension to stay on land. Our formula works, as borneout by the over 60 per cent of repeat clients who return year afteryear - one traveller managed to sail regularly with us for more than13 years. We have built up a reputation for quality holidaysthroughout the world with clients from America, Australia, SouthAfrica, Canada, as well as the UK and other European countries. Weare a safe pair of hands to make your holiday in Turkey a memorableexperience.

Whether you choose to join a small group holiday, or book aprivate charter, a DayDreams holiday allows you to set the pacefor when you swim or sunbathe, explore local village life or visitancient archaeological sites. You’ll be surprised at how completelyyou relax from the moment you step on board. As you gently sailor cruise before the balmy winds, meandering between idyllicbays and quiet villages you can leave the outside world behind.

The Mediterranean and Aegean coastlines are still unspoilt, providing many magical moments for that chance encounter withdolphins or a loggerhead turtle. Turkey’s fascinating culture, withmore than a hint of the East, ensures a holiday to remember.

‘Jenny Day with Captain Mustafa, Cevri Hasan III’

“We are in our sixth year with DayDreams and we will continue touse the Cevri Hasan III and Captain Mustafa until we can’t make thejourney. Each year has been utterly marvellous, with great crews, itineraries and food. When Captain Mustafa asks each day wherewe want to sail to, we don’t really care, because we know he willlook after us and all will be well and wherever we go anyway will bebeautiful. We just adore the time on board and next year haveextended our journey to 3 weeks” Jim Dunn and friends travelled in July 2010.

Wooden boats have been plying their trade along the ancient Anatoliancoast for centuries. Now present day Turkey, it is a popular holidaydestination. One of the most important old towns with a tradition of boatbuilding is Bodrum, known as Halicarnassus in ancient times. It is thebirthplace of Herodotus and the site of one of the Seven Wonders of theWorld – the tomb of King Mausolus. It is from here that DayDreams sourcesits collection of beautiful wood built gulets and schooners. Constructed ina mixture of woods: pine, teak and mahogany, in a variety of sizes andstandards, modern boat designs have retained many of the traditionalfeatures from the past, whilst ensuring that the 21st century traveller canenjoy modern amenities and comfort. The latest de-luxe gulets recentlyadded to our list are as good as many 5* hotels.

A week or two sailing or cruising aboard one of these romantic vessels, waited on hand and foot, is the perfect holiday for any group of people.DayDreams has a wide variety of these unique boats available for privatehire, whether for a honeymoon, the annual family holiday or a larger groupwanting to sail and cruise in style. Many of the 26 boats, such as the threeCevri Hasans, have been built to cruise or sail (winds permitting) withinteriors individually designed and fitted to provide a generous amount ofspace. DayDreams are the sole UK agents for the Cevri Hasans. There arealso 6 de-luxe gulets at the top end of our list and a further 4 gulets for thoseon a small budget. They can comfortably accommodate between 6 and16people, depending on the size of boat, with plenty of deck space foreveryone. Each boat is well equipped with a variety of watersportsequipment and the new obligatory AIS central tracking system.

A professional and relaxed informal atmosphere prevails, with a captain, cookand crew to run the boat and cater to your needs. We have many yearsexperience travelling along this coastline and we can advise you on your route

and the places of interest you might want to visit. We will brief the captain in advance of your arrival so he will steer a course to suit you –remember, this is your private boat for the duration of your stay. Once on board, flexibility in planning your route and your day is a feature ofour charters, although Jenny Day can provide information and ideas in advance to smooth the way. Many captains like to put up their sails, winds permitting. However, this is best on days with no particular place to go.

Delicious Turkish food is prepared by your onboard cook and all meals are eaten ‘al fresco’ on deck, except in early and late season when you mightprefer to use the comfortable salon. There is a lot more to Turkish food than kebabs. Most of the recipes prepared on our boats use different stylesof Anatolian cuisine using the best fresh produce available, with most meals typical of those eaten at home in this part of Turkey. There are numerous

'mezze' dishes using vegetables, pulses, pastries, yogurt and of course, garlic.Wonderful salads, sometimes using wildingredients such as samphire which is foundlocally; highly flavoured, aromatic meat dishes, chicken and lamb casseroles, barbeques andfish and a variety of rice and bulgur pilaurecipes. Vegetables and a wide variety of fruitsare mostly seasonal, so if you like fresh broadbeans or strawberries in particular, travel toTurkey in May. We will liaise with you aboutyour menu and ensure all provisions, includingyour drinks list, are on board before yourarrival. We do not operate a ‘bar system’. Yousimply pay at cost for all provisions on arrivalunless you book a full board arrangement inadvance. Foodies looking for more details onmenus should contact Jenny Day.

Turkey is a fascinating and friendly country whereyou can soak up the history of ancient civilisations, savour the atmosphere of market towns andvillages and still experience the beauty of wild anddramatic places. Whether on land or sea, thescenery is spectacular. The Mediterranean andAegean areas are still surprisingly unspoilt alongthe coast from Bodrum to Olympos in the southeast. Our boats will sail (winds permitting) or motoralong your chosen route. There are a variety ofitineraries to follow, depending on your interestsand you can now combine the Dodecanese Islandswith Turkey. Here is a snapshot of the variousroutes. All these itineraries can be followed inreverse to the routes indicated here. More detailsand pictures can be found on our website at www.daydreams-travel.com

FETHIYE GULF TO ANTALYA (The Lycian Coastline)Without a doubt the best area for archaeological sites accessible fromthe sea. This route can be followed in sections depending on whetheryou have one week, ten days or two weeks to spare. Our captains willorganise local transport to take you on visits to archaeological sites whenappropriate, although many are just a short walk from your mooring.

BODRUM-BODRUM (The Gokova Gulf)You could spend a week or ten days here, slowly savouring some ofthe most beautiful and breakthtaking scenery to be found along theentire coastline. Surrounded by high mountains, there are numerousforestry trails for walking and a few small villages.

MARMARIS TO GOCEK/FETHIYEAn ideal one week itinerary with numerous bays and coves in the

Fethiye Gulf. From Ekincik you can visit the ancient Carian city ofCaunus by water taxi. Fethiye town has an excellent old marketquarter and Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliff.

BODRUM-MARMARIS (The Hisaranu Gulf)This route has a bit of everything. You can visit Knidos forarchaeology and interesting history. There are villages and beautifulbays in the Hisaranu Gulf and nightlife and extensive shopping atthe end of your charter in Marmaris.

DODECANESE ISLANDS (Greece)There are two recommended itineraries accessible from the Turkishcoastline between Kusadasi and Samos to the north, down to Kos,Rhodes/Marmaris at the southern end. Islands you can visit includeSamos, Patmos, Lipsi, Leros, Kos, Nissyros, Tilos, and Symi.

DayDreams Afloat in Turkey DayDreams Afloat in Turkey Schooner Parties on Cevri Hasan III

Imagine waking in the morning with the sun streaming through theporthole and pulling on your swimsuit for a swim before breakfast.Anchor up, off you go to a beautiful bay for a swim, or potter abouton a canoe. A delicious lunch follows and more swimming and sun.Winds permitting, the sails go up and off you go again to anothermagical setting for dinner and an overnight stay.

DayDreams have been organising their schooner parties since1987 with great success. Run more in the style of an informal houseparty, considerable thought goes into putting together a goodsocial mix of single people, couples and friends. There are manyregular travellers in each group with Jenny Day personally leadingthe party as tour leader.

If you are looking to escape the everyday stresses of life, a weekor two aboard Cevri Hasan III is definitely the answer. Its spaciousdeck areas provide ample room for everyone, even to find thatcorner alone for a few quiet moments. You will lose all sense oftime as you drift from one idyllic bay to the next, waited on handand foot. Your biggest decision of the day will be whether to swimor paddle a canoe, soak up the sun, drink a beer or gin and tonic;or if you’re feeling energetic, take a walk ashore along one of themany forestry trails or explore a small village.

The very best of Anatolian home cooking is a feature of ourschooner parties with a generous budget to ensure you dine in style. Delicious chicken and meat casseroles, barbeques, wonderful fresh fruit and salads, numerous mezze, fresh fish andcountless recipes loved by both vegetarians and meat eaters.

Page 13: Day Dreams Afloat in Turkey

DayDreams Afloat in Turkey DayDreams Afloat in Turkey Schooner Parties on Cevri Hasan IIIA variety of itineraries along the Turkish coast and Dodecaneseislands are carefully planned with opportunities to explore on shoreevery day. Local transport is organised when interestingarchaeological sites are accessible from a harbour such as;Arykanda from Finike, or Pinara and the Saklikent gorge fromFethiye. When we explore the Dodecanese islands we visit thecrater of a volcano on Nissyros, the small mountainside monasteryon Tilos and the monastery of St. John on Patmos. April and May are good times for wild flowers and walking forestrytrails along the coastline. June and September are good for sunworshippers without being too hot to explore on shore. Octoberis still lovely with temperatures around 80F. – an ideal time forthose interested in exploring on shore. There are numerousarchaeological sites included in the coastal itineraries, with manycharming small towns and villages to explore. Typical itinerariesinclude Bodrum and the Gokova gulf and the Hisaranu gulf, theNorthern Dodecanese islands, the Southern Dodecanese islandsand the Lycian coastline between Fethiye and Finike. As many ofour itineraries start or finish at Bodrum, we recommend a stopoverat the Marina Vista Hotel overlooking the castle and harbour, toprovide an extra day to explore the town and the crusader castleand award winning museum of underwater archaeology.

For more detailed itineraries and dates please contact the office forthe current Small Group Programme, or go to our website.

"Fourteen years since our last trip, things have not changed.Great company, food, fantastic crew and then there is Jenny, tour leader, friend.. thank you very much"Martin & Julie Oatley travelled on a schooner party inSeptember 2010.

DayDreams Afloat in Turkey DayDreams Afloat in Turkey Escorted Land Tours - Small Group Holidays

Over the years we have organised a varietyof three and seven day land-based holidayslinked to our schooner parties. The idea of a small group of 10-16 people travellingtogether in the style of a ‘house-party’ hasproved popular, particularly with those wholike to keep their feet firmly on the ground. These land tours are personally led by Jenny Day, who has researched interestingitineraries exploring some of Turkey’s mostfascinating inland cities and historic sitesmixed with places off the beaten track. Weusually plan dates either before or after aschooner party, so that anyone wanting tocombine land and sea can book a longer stay.

ISTANBUL is a popular stopover at the endof a schooner party. This is one of ourfavourite cities, always vibrant, exciting andgreat for shopping. The Ottoman palaces, mosques and museums are wonderful, withso many to choose from you would be hard

pressed to fit them all in on one visit. We will organise your hotel, guided walking tour of the old city, transfers and any other activity, whetherfor an individual or several people travelling together. We also operate a long weekend house-party style holiday based in the old city every 2/3years. The next special Istanbul event will be in November 2012 when we will celebrate the end of our 25th anniversary year with a house-party staying at the Arena Hotel in the old city. This is one of our favourite small hotels, a 19th Century Ottoman stone house, sympatheticallyrestored by the family descendants of the original owner.

EARLY MAY 2011, we have planned a north Aegean tourwhich includes Pergamon, Cunda island and Ayvalik, Assos, Troy andthe Dardenelles and Gallipoli. Pergamon is one of Turkey’s most important archaeological sites, where Alexander the Great left a significantpart of his wealth before leaving for his Asia expedition. The coastline around Ayvalik and Assos was home to many Ottoman Greeks priorto 1923 and there are many picturesque streets of their old houses, now restored and refurbished. We have also included two days basedat a small hotel in the Kaz mountains for some relaxation and walking. Kazdaglari, (Ida mountain in Turkish) was known as the mountain ofthe gods. Homer mentions it in his ‘Iliad’ many times. The Trojan war took place here. The Kaz mountain region is famous locally for alandscape filled with rare plant species, firs, streams and waterfalls and is popular with Turkish walkers and nature lovers. (The detaileditinerary is available from the office and it can also be found on our website.)

Ionion cities of the southern Aegean also feature in some of our escorted holidays – Ephesus, Priene, Miletus and the Temple of Apollo atDidyma. There are several variations on these itineraries as they can be part of a schooner party programme or land tour. Please contactthe office for more details.

Combine a Stay on Land with a Cruise Along the CoastJourney through pine forests, passingfrom one green and fertile valley toanother; across arid plains, throughvast acres of cotton fields in October, market garden produce throughoutthe spring and summer, with much ofthis terrain suspended between anawesome mountainous back drop. Asyou gaze upon rivers spilling overgigantic boulders, sometimes almosthanging in space, you’ll wonder at themajesty of nature. The constantlychanging landscape will keep youspell bound. Isolated villages nestlingin the mountains and valleys, wheretime has stood still for centuries;where some of the oldest traditionalcrafts are still maintained; ancient andmystical sites far off the beaten track, inaccessible to all but the enterprising.

Whether you spend a week or tendays on a boat, it is always an addedbonus when you combine a spell on land with your cruise. You could plan a few days ‘off the beaten track’ based at one of the many hotelsor pensions, or a short stay in Istanbul. If you have more time available why not think about an inland tour? We can plan your route to takein your special interests whether in history, archaeology, bird watching, mountain walking or just exploring all before you. Turkey is a vastcountry with much to offer the intrepid traveller. We have detailed here a few ideas for journeys on land which could be combined withyour coastal cruise. Alternatively you might want to combine one of our escorted Land Tours with your charter.

CENTRAL ANATOLIA- the capital city Ankara, Cappadocia with its extraordinary volcanic landscape and Hattusas, the Hittite City datingfrom 2500 BC. These marvellous places formed the basis of a wonderful tour led by Jenny Day in 2008. We plan to repeat these areas indifferent escorted itineraries in 2012. They can also be included as part of a tailor-made tour for individuals or private groups.

ANTALYA AND THE ANCIENT REGION OF PAMPHYLIA - Antalya is a coastal city surrounded by the Taurus mountains. There arethree recommended archaeological sites to visit in this area. Termessos, perched on the side of Mount Solymos is a fascinating ruined citywith fantastic views and a personal favourite of Jenny Day. Close to Antalya is Aspendos, one of the best preserved Roman theatres to befound in this region, which also hosts an opera and ballet season in mid June. Perge, founded around 1000 BC is a well excavated site withimpressive ruins including Roman baths, a stadium and a Byzantine basilica. If history is not a priority, a visit to the Koprulu Kanyon is certainlyrecommended. This is a national park with stunning scenery, Roman bridges and the fast flowing Koprulu river running through it. Whitewater rafting operators can be found here. At the end of the final stretch of road is the small ruined city of Selge.

A few days staying in the oldcity in one of the restoredOttoman houses (boutiquehotels) will enable you to visitsome of the world’s greatestmuseums and buildings. It isjust a few minutes walk fromsome of these hotels to theTopkapi museum, once hometo the Ottoman Sultans andhousing a magnificent collectionof jewels and artefacts; the 5thcentury cathedral St Sophia; thefamous Blue Mosque with its sixminarets and blue Iznik tiles, theByzantine underground cistern,

numerous museums and of course the Grand Bazaar and streetmarkets for shoppers. Foodies will find a diverse and fantasticrange of restaurants throughout the old and new city. Lastly, andnot to be missed, is a trip up the Bosphorus on a ferry or private

motor boat for a marvellous view of the Istanbul skyline. If you have visited Istanbul before and want to experience a different aspect of this exciting city, try one of the new hotels inrecently restored historicbuildings such as the PalazzoDonizetti or Pera Palace inBeyoglu. For the hotmonths of July and Augustthere are some excellentwaterfront hotels on theBosphorus, both on theEuropean and Asian side.We know the city well and can arrange a tailor-made itinerary for any individual or group. Wewill be finishing our 25thAnniversary year in Istanbulin November 2012 with ahouse party and special tour.

Istanbul - where east meets west

16

Southern Aegean - Ephesus and the Ionian cities

Three days based at a hotel in Kusadasi, or pension in Selcuk, would be theminimum time needed to fit in all these fascinating sites, particularly a visit to oneof the most important cities of the ancient world, Ephesus. Even with largenumbers of tourists around, you can still appreciate this spectacular wellpreserved city. We also recommend including the museum and Basilica of St.John which are close by at Selcuk. The Ionian cities of Priene, Miletos and theTemple of Apollo at Didyma are all worth a visit and can be seen in a day. If youcan spare more time in this region, travel further inland to visit Pamukkale, famous for its extraordinary landscape of white calcium deposits and springscascading down over the natural pools. This is also the location of ancientHierapolis.

With an overnight stay at Pamukkale, you could then travel on to Aphrodisias. This is a remarkable site with a special atmosphere; in the middle of nowhere butwith numerous well-preserved buildings and sculptures from the Greek andRoman periods. The most stunning sight is the huge stadium. Sculptures andother important finds are housed in a museum.

We have a number of tried and tested itineraries covering all these marvellous archaeological sites. If you don’t have time for them all, youcould choose those of specific interest and we will organise a tailor-made programme to suit you.
