Day 14
Connecting back to practice
The next step…
… will be yours to choose
We want to put you in the situations you encounter all the time in your classroom.
But we can, and will, hit the pause button…
Our Process• We’re going to watch two classroom videos• We’re going to pause after a particular vignette and
ask you to:– Spend a few of minutes individually thinking about what
you would say to the student speaking and/or another student to • push their thinking• probe for understanding
– Go around your table collecting input• Don’t being your discussion until everyone contributes
– Discuss your thoughts about commonalities & differencesDon’t worry… we’ll repeat this slide after each vignette
Vignettes One & Two
Comes from Jo Boaler’s bookConnecting mathematical ideaswhich has two CDs of classroom
videos in the back
Our video is entitled “Convincing Others” and will show two students with two different approaches to explaining why 2(n-1) = 2n-2

Vignette Three & Four
The next video is from Seattle; they are working on a probability problem likely familiar to you (pennies, nickels & dimes in a pocket)
Using the same process as before, let’s take a look at this video.

It’s hard to change
Write it downState it publicallyFind a way to be held accountableKnow how to achieve itBe realistic
We’re going to discuss ideas to help bring all this home with you … and have you share your ideas
One Last Video
We have one more very short vignette to queue up to introduce your “homework”
Between Today & Your Departure
Determine one or two achievable goals for next school year
• Visit Silver King 1 – walk up to the tripod with the camera
• Follow the instructions to tape (2 minute maximum) your shout-out
• This will be clipped & edited & put on your Ning space – your choice whether to make it public
• If you want to start again… just say “I’m starting again” and we’ll take your last & best copy
