Page 3: dawn newsletter october2004 - Birmingham Central During Ramadan the gates of paradise are opened and the gates of Hell Fire are locked. • In it sins are forgiven. • In it occurs

 The Prophet said:

“Every action of the son of Adam is given manifold reward, each good deed receiving ten times its like, up to seven hundred times. Allah the Most High said, ‘Except for fasting, for it is for Me and I will give recompense for it, he leaves of his desires and his food for me. ‘ For the fasting person there are two times of joy; a time of joy when he breaks his fast and the time of joy when he meets his

Lord, and the smell coming from the mouth of the fasting person is better with Allah then the smell of musk.”

Virtues of Ramadan

• During Ramadan the gates of paradise are opened and the gates of Hell Fire are locked. • In it sins are forgiven. • In it occurs Laylatul-Qadr (a night better than a thousand nights) • Fasting is a shield against Hell Fire and a cause for entering Paradise.

Suhoor (The pre dawn - meal)

• It is a blessed meal that should not be neglected. • Delay it as much as possible i.e. right until the time for Fajr begins. • The best form of Suhoor is dates. • The intention for fasting is in the heart, no verbal intention is to be uttered.

While you are fasting…

• Recite the Qur’an as much as possible and reflect upon its meanings. • Observe the five prayers properly at their times. • Increase in good actions such as charity. • Provide foods at the time for your brothers and sisters who are fasting. • Refrain from backbiting, lying and indecent speech.

Iftar

• Do not delay in breaking the fast once the sun has set. • It is preferable to break the fast with dates (or else with water) • It is a time when supplications are accepted. • The best supplications are that of the prophet (pbuh) he would say at the time of breaking his fast,

[Dahabadh dhama’u wab tallatil ‘urooqu, wa thabatal ajru inshaallaah] “The thirst has gone, the veins are moisturised and the reward is certain, if Allah wills.” Etiquette of eating

• At the beginning of a meal say, Bismillaah (“In the name of Allah”) • Eat with your right hand. • Eat that which is nearest to you. • Do not criticise the food. • Do not waste food or be extravagant. • Do not eat too much. • Any food left on ones finger should be licked. • On completion of a meal recite:

[Alhamdulillaahi-ladhee at’amanee haadhaa wa razaqaneehee min ghairi hawlin minnee wa la qowwah] “All praise is for Allah, who has given me this (food to eat) and provided me without any effort or power on my part.”

Salman Al-Farisi reported that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) addressed us on the last day of Sha’ban and said: “O People, a great and blessed month is near at hand. The month in which comes a night better than a thousand months.” Allah has ordained fasts for you and prescribed supererogatory prayer at night. He who drew close to (Allah) by any noble deed in the month of Ramadhan is just like the person who performed an obligatory act in other months. And he, who performed an obligatory act in the month of Ramadhan, is just like the person who performed seventy obligatory acts in other months. It is the month of endurance and the reward of endurance is Paradise. It is the month of consolation. It is the month in which the livelihood of a believer is increased. And he who provided (eatable) to one fasting (for breaking the fast) he is entitled to forgiveness of his sins and safeguard from Hell-fire and is entitled to the reward equal to that of fasting without any decrease in his reward. It is the month that its first term (ten days) is a period of mercy, its second term is the period of forgiveness and its last term is the period of safety from the Hell-fire. (Shu’ab Al-Iman)

WHO MUST FAST

The fasting of Ramadhan is compulsory upon every Muslim, male or female, who has these qualifications: 1. To be mentally and physically fit

which means to be sane and able; 2. To be of full age of puberty and

discretion, this is normally about fourteen. Children under this age should be encouraged to start this god practice on easy levels, so when they reach the age of puberty they will be mentally and physically prepared to observe the fasting;

3. To be present at your permanent settlement, your home town, your farm, your business premises etc. This means not to be travelling on a journey of about fifty miles or more.

4. To be fairly certain that the fasting is unlikely to cause you any harm, physical or mental, other than normal reactions to hunger, thirst etc.

CHOICE BETWEEN OBSERVING THE

FAST OR BREAKING IT ON A JOURNEY

Aisha reported that Hamza bin Amer al-Aslami asked the messenger of Allah: I am a person devoted going on a journey. Should I fast during the journey? He said, “Fast if you like and break it if you like.” (Muslim) Note: According to verse 185 of Surah Baqara, a traveller or a sick person should complete the fasts of the missing days as soon as he is in the position to do so.

MAKING UP MISSED DAYS OF RAMADHAN

Making up missed days of Ramadhan is an obligation that need not be fulfilled immediately because the time for fulfilling is very wide and one may perform it at any time. This is also the case with the fast of expiation. It has been authentically reported that ‘Aisha would make up her missed days during the month of Sha’ban (the month preceding Ramadhan), and that she did not perform them immediately even if she had the ability to do so. As for making up the missed days of Ramadhan, ad-Daraqutni recorded from Ibn ‘Umar that the Prophet said: “If you wish, make them on non-consecutive days and if you wish on consecutive days.” THE MANNERS OF FASTING During the month of Ramadhan, the Prophet (pbuh) used to follow some etiquette and acts which if practised will add to the reward of the believer. Therefore, it is preferred for the fasting person to observe the following manners. 1. SUHOOR: EATING A PRE-DAWN MEAL According to hadith, the pre-dawn meal is described as blessed nourishment. (an-Nasai). However, there is no sin upon one who does not do so.

The Sunnah would be fulfilled by eating a small or large quantity of food, or even just be drinking a sip of water as the messenger of Allah said: The pre-dawn meal is blessed, so do not neglect it even if you only take a sip of water. Verily, Allah and the angels pray for those who have the pre-dawn meals. (Ahmad) 2. HASTENING IN BREAKING THE FAST It is preferred for the fasting person to hasten on breaking the fast when the sun has set. The Prophet said: The people will always be with the good as long as they hasten in breaking the fast. (Al-Bukhari & Muslim) The Prophet said: If one of you is fasting, he should break his fast with dates. If dates are not available, then with water, for water is purifying. (Al-Tirmidhi) 3. SUPPLICATION WHILE

BREAKING THE FAST AND WHILE FASTING

The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: A fasting person, upon breaking his fast, has a supplication that will not be rejected. When ‘Abdullah broke his fast he would say: O Allah, I ask of You, by Your mercy that encompasses everything, to forgive me. 4. REFRAINING FROM

PERFORMING ANY ACTION THAT DOES NOT BENEFIT THE FASTING

Fasting is a type of worship that draws one closer to Allah. Allah has prescribed it to purify the soul and to train it in good deeds. The fasting person must be on guard against any act that may cause him to lose the benefits of his fast. Thus, his fast will increase his God-consciousness. Fasting is not just refraining from eating and drinking, but it is also refraining from everything else that Allah has forbidden.

The Prophet said: Fasting is not abstaining from eating and drinking only, but also from vain speech and foul language. If one of you is being cursed or annoyed, he should say: ‘I am fasting, I am fasting’. (Ibn Khuaimah, Ibn Hibban & al-Hakim) The noble Prophet, said: Allah does not need the fast of one who does not abandon false speech or acting according to his false speech. (Bukhari) 5. USING THE TOOTH STICK (BRUSH) It is preferred for the fasting person to use a tooth stick or a brush. There is no difference if he uses it at the beginning or the ending of the day. At-Tirmidhi affirms that: ‘As-Shafhi did not see anything wrong with using a tooth stick (brush) during, the beginning or the ending of the day.’ The Prophet would use his tooth stick (brush) while fasting. 6. BEING GENEROUS AND STUDYING THE QUR’AN Being generous and studying the Qur'an is recommended during any time, but it is especially stressed during the month of Ramadhan. Al-Bukhari recorded that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “The Prophet was the most generous of people, but he would be the most generous during Ramadhan when he would meet with (the angel) Gabriel. He would meet with him every night and recite the Qur'an. When Gabriel met him, he would be more generous than a fast wind.” 7. STRIVING TO PERFORM AS MANY ACTS OF

WORSHIPPING AS POSSIBLE DURING THE LAST TEN DAYS OF RAMADHAN

Al-Bukhari and Muslim record from ‘Aisha that during the last ten days of Ramadhan, the Messenger of Allah would wake his wives up during the night and then remain apart from them (that is, being busy in acts of worship). A version in Muslim states: “He would strive (to do acts of worship) during the last ten days of Ramadhan more than he would at any other time.” 8. I’TIKAF: SECLUSION IN THE MOSQUE I’tikaf is to remain in the masjid for the sole purpose of worshipping Allah by reciting the Qur'an, performing voluntary prayers during the time when they are not forbidden, praising Allah, supplicating to Him or doing any other kind of worship. The Prophet, salla Allah-u laihe wa salam, used to practice I’tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadhan. Aisha, said: “The Prophet, (pbuh) used to practice I’tikaf for ten days in Ramadhan of each year. In the year in which he died he made I’tikaf for twenty days.” (Bukhari)

Asalaam-u-alaikum

On behalf of West Midlands Police, I wish you all a happy Ramadhan and hope that this month of peace

and blessings will be a happy time for you.

This important religious period is always a busy time of year and we are working closely with the mosque to ensure everyone attending enjoys this

special time in a safe and happy environment.

During Ramadhan a huge amount of both traffic and pedestrians are expected in the area. To ease this congestion, I would ask all drivers coming to the area to ensure they are mindful of where they park. For example, please avoid parking on the

pavement, in between yellow police cones, across grass verges, across residents’ driveways or in

restricted areas in and around the mosque.

Cars which are parked in an inconsiderate way may be issued with fixed penalty tickets and

vehicles may be removed at extra cost.

I would ask that you politely respect this notification and park correctly at all times. If

possible, help ease congestion by sharing lifts or using public transport.

Last year, the policing operation during Ramadhan met with a positive response from both worshipers and local residents. I am sure that with your help again this year we can have a similar successful

festival.

The Adult Education and Training Centre at the mosque was officially opened on Friday 10th September 2004 by England’s first

Muslim MP, Khalid Mahmood of the Perry Barr constituency. The Member of Parliament who launched the centre with Dr. M. Naseem, Mr. D. M. Khan and Mr. Malik Khan praised the Muslim

community for investing in adult education and was very impressed by the state-of-the-art IT suite which is centrepiece to the new centre for learning. The venture is supported by MCET, Learn

A Coffee Morning was held at the mosque on Friday 24th September

between 10am and 12.30pm as part of a national effort to raise money for
