GREETINGS FROM ZAMBIA

It has been a long time since you received aZAMBIA MESSENGER. We apologize forthe long "dry spell." Part of the problem hasbeen a three month bout with parasites whichfor all practical purposes put me out ofcommission. I didn't stop completely but mostof that time did only what was absolutelynecessary. (Some things that were necessary, such as putting out a ZAMBIAMESSENGER, didn't get done.) The work at Berean (the English languagecongregation) has not received the attention itshould have, but has continued slow butsteady growth. LOOKING FOR A PROJECT?

While we were in the States a book storegave us a six month supply of back issues ofSEEK magazine which we have been givingto the youth group each week. They haveenjoyed and appreciated them. We alsoreceived a supply of RADAR, JET CADET,FOUR AND FIVE, and NURSERY take-home papers which have been used effectivelyin the Sunday school program. Now that weare almost out of them we are hoping thatsomeone would like to take the project ofsupplying the Berean Church with issues ofsome of these papers. We could useLOOKOUT and CHRISTIAN STANDARD.If your church, class, ladies group or youthgroup would like to take the project ofsupplying some of these to Berean pleasewrite us and we can tell you what is neededmost, and the number of copies needed tosupply each age group. Berean can use eitherback or current issues. Thank you for yourconcern and assistance to the Berean Church.

WOMEN'S ACTIVITIES

The women of the churches here aregrowing and doing well. While we were onfurlough the women of the Western District inGeorgia collected material scraps and sewingsupplies to be used in our women's work here.It has really been a blessing to all of them. AtMatero the women have organized a sewingclub, and make clothes to sell at a very lowprice in order to have an income so they cangive to the work of the church. Many of thesewomen are married to non-Christians, andhave no income of their own to give, so thishas created jobs for them to earn money andhas also been a help to those who can buyclothes for their children at a low cost. Justrecently the women were able to buy two steeldoors for the church to replace ones that hadbeen stolen. They cost K400.00, and thewomen were so thankful to have the money onhand as a result of their sewing club. Theyhave asked me to express their thanks overand over again to the women from Americawho have helped them. We thank God for allof you who have helped in this way.

SCHOOL EXPANDS

Judy has reorganized and divided thechildren into three Sunday School classes. Our problem is that we have only one classroom in the building (the adult class meets inthe sanctuary). We have one class that meetsin an insaka (small shelter) and another classthat meets in the container used for shippingour goods to Zambia. Even now some of theseclasses need to be divided again because ofthewide age differences. We now have planssubmitted to the City Council for aneducational wing. With their approval it ishoped that construction can begin bySeptember and that by the beginning of 1987we will have more adequate facilities for ourSunday School. Please pray that we can traindedicated teachers who will be committed tobuilding a strong Sunday School.

There is nothing quite like a new baby, andwhen it's your grandchild, it's even morespecial. With the birth of our secondgrandson, Michael Dean, we feel like oldhands at this game of grandparenting. Hewas born at a mission hospital about a twohour drive from Mongu, Jim and Cindy'shome. We had all worried that she wouldn't

make it to the hospital on time and keptteasing Jim about delivering the baby allalone out in the bush, but they were there withplenty of time to spare. I went out the dayafter he was born, and Jim and I took motherand baby home the next day, and I playedGranny for a few days. It was a little hard onDean because Mike chose to be born beforeDavid went back to school, so he had to helphim pack and make sure he got off to schoolokay. He even sewed on a couple of buttonsand made sure name tags were on everythingDavid had to take back to school.

On June 13, our daughter Cyndee isexpecting her second child, and we're allhoping for a sister for Joshua. It hardly seemspossible that Joshua is now two years old, but

he celebrated his second birthday April 19.How can this be when Dean and I are still justchildren ourselves?? We just thank God forthe blessings of a wonderful family and praythat all of us will glorify Him with our lives.

PROPOSED ADDITION TO BEREAN

As is stated in the article concerning the Sunday Schoolwehave a shortage ofspace forclasses. Thesteering committee has made the decision to build an addition to our existing building which willgreatly increase our possibilities for growth. We will then have adequate classrooms for the SundaySchool and will be better able to minister to our children and young people. Becauseof the largenumberofchildrenwhoattend wehave longfelt the needforhaving youthchurch. Thisadditionwillgive us the space in which to do so. v i •

Berean has determined to raise as much of the money for this project as they can, but being a youngcongregation with many unemployed members they will not be able to come up with the amountneeded for such an addition. If you would like to assist with the building or furnishings, it will begreatly appreciated. Designate funds "Berean Building and send them to:

VISITS TO MONGU

Mongu is in the western province ofZambiaabout 7 hours driving time from Lusaka and iswhere Jim and Cindy live and work. As youcan imagine we don't make trips there oftenbut opportunities for a visit there are alwayswelcome. They have recently completed theconstruction of the Imwiko Church of Christbuilding. During that construction we hadopportunity to visit them and help withputting the roof on the building.

A couple monthsH later, we, along witha delegation fromBerean, were invitedto the dedication ofthe completed houseof worship. This wasa special joy for us atBerean as well as theChristians Im-wiko. While Jim andwe were on furloughthe leaders fromBerean took turns

one weekend everymonth going to

Dean securing encourageroofin, sheet bolts wT aU

considered it a privilege to be asked toparticipate in the dedication service.

A third visit was absolutely necessary as wewent to welcome Michael Dean to the Davisfamily and Zambia Christian Mission. Baby, mother, father and grandparents are all doingwell.

BEREAN CHURCHGIVES TOWARD

BUILDING PROJECT

We stated in the last issue of the ZAMBIAMESSENGER that the Berean Church wasgoing to give as much as possible toward theirbuilding project. It was decided by thecongregation that their goal would be to raiseat least 10%oftheprojectedcostthrough threespecial offerings. This is the first time theyhave undertaken a task of this nature andthere was considerable doubt about theirability to reach such a goal. Everyone begantalking and praying about it and enthusiasmhas been contagious. After the first offeringthe doubt melted away and confidence in theirability to reach the goal grew. We were allpleased when the final offering went far overthe goal and a "victory day" celebration wasenjoyed by all who were present on that day.

This holiday has been very exciting andeducational. My aunt came out from theStates so we took her around to some sights. We went to Victoria Falls which was greatfun. I had not been there since I was veryyoung and it was nice to see the falls again. They were really beautiful for there wasplenty ol' water going over. You could sit atone spot and marvel at their awesome powerand beauty i'or hours. We also went to twodifferent game parks where we saw a widevariety of wildlife and exotic tropical plantsand birds. It will be a pity when school startsagain. Well, seems like that's about it for thistime.

f Proverbs 17:6 is a

iIIXIjTT fir f^avorite verse of mineand its truth has become

n ^ even morea reality in the491 months. It^liCiVy reads; Children's

^ children are a crownto the aged, and

parents are the pride of their children. (Ifwe have grandchildren, does that make usaged?)

In the last issue of the ZAMBIAMESSENGER, I told you about the birth ofMichael Dean, our second grandson. OnJune 16, Shandyn Nichole, our first granddaughter, was born to Cyndee and Rick. Sheis (of course) a beautiful baby, and everyonewas so happy to have a girl in the family now.Joshua is proud of her and I'm sure helps outgreatly with feeding her. I was so happy to beable to be there at her birth and see her just fortwo day before I had to come home. Just aweek after she was born, (Cyndee only stayedin the hospital 2 days) Cyndee called and saidthey had to take her back to the hospital witha high fever. After many tests and 4 days inthe hospital, they were unable to diagnose thecause, but discharged her and told themmaybe it was a virus and to watch her closely. She is doing fine now, and is a healthy, happytwo month old!

Another occasion just passed, which alsobears out this scripture, was the 50th weddinganniversary of my parents, Mr. and Mrs. JimMitchell. I am one of 6 children, and all of usare proud of our parents and were happy to beable to share in this occasion with them. Ithank God for my parents and pray they willhave many more years together. Now that Iam a parent, and a grandparent, and still

have my parents and mother-in-law, I canbetter understand how hard it is for them forus to be on the other side of the world. We arethe middle generation, and just as it's so hardfor us to have two of our children (Rick andCyndee) and two grandchildren so far fromus, it's the same for them. We thank God forthe family He has given us, and pray that wecan be a source of strength and joy to them asthey are to us.

VICTORY DAY AT BEREANAttention at Berean Church of Christ has been focused on the extension of our building which has

been mentioned in the last two issues of the ZAMBIA MESSENGER. Below are scenes from the"victory day" when the final building fund offering exceeded the goal set.

We again express our deepest gratitude to Charlie and Marie Hathaway who were with us for threemonths and supervised the construction of the building nearly to completion. The blessing of theirChristian witness will long be felt and remembered by us and the entire Berean congregation. By thetime you read this newsletter only the finishing touches will remain to be done on the building.

MEET LINN STATONLinn Staton, from the Gardenside Christian Church in Lexington, Kentucky, is in Zambia for two

years working with the Gary Burlingtons inKasama. However, because of his special gift of workingwith youth, we asked him to come to Lusaka and work with the Berean Christ In Youth group. Hespent three months with us and all were blessed by the programs he and the youth have had atBerean. He has also been a tremendous blessing in other areas such as radio and T.V. productionsand assisting with whatever needed to be done. We had a hard time letting him go back to Kasamabut for some reason the Burlingtons insisted! Thanks for blessing all our lives Linn (see pictures onpage four).
