THE DAVID AUSTIN AUSTRALIAN COLLECTION

David J.C. Austin and David C.H. Austin.

Welcome to our first collection of English Rosesfor Australia. We are proud to be a family

owned company with a long heritage of breeding andgrowing roses. Our objective has always remained thesame: to combine the best of the old with the best ofthe new, to create roses that will provide the greatestpossible pleasure for the gardener.Today’s English Roses provide a succession of

beautiful fragrant blooms in a wide range of natural, pure colours. They have graceful, natural, shrubbygrowth whichmakes them ideal for large pots, beds andmixed borders. Our English Roses are particularly wellsuited to the Australian climate. They have performedwonderfully well even throughout times of droughtand heavy rain. In recent years we have made somegreat improvements to the health and vigour of theroses. As a result, we believe the new varieties for 2011and 2012 are some of the best we have ever introduced.Three of our new varieties have already received

several important accolades from around the world.

‘Princess Alexandra of Kent’ won the top award forfragrance at both the 2009Glasgow Trials and the 2010Desert Rose Society show in California. It has adelicious fresh tea scent, which changes to lemon overtime with a hint of blackcurrants. At the 2009 ConcursInternacional de Roses in Barcelona ‘Young Lycidas’with its intriguing mixed scent of tea, old rose andcedar was also awarded the top prize for fragrance andWisley 2008 was presented with Best Rose forLandscaping. If you are finding it hard to choose the best rose for

your needs from the many varieties available, youmight like to consult pages 52 and 53, where we suggestthe perfect varieties for different situations such as idealroses for hedging; excellent shrubs and climbers forgrowing in shady positions and the best roses forcutting and creating arrangements for the home.We would like to wish all rose lovers a very happy

BARE ROOTSABOUT DAVID AUSTIN ROSESDavid Austin Roses is an internationallyrecognised, family-owned business whichtakes a long-term approach to breedingand marketing our award-winning roses. The first David Austin roses to hitAustralia were widely acclaimed and stillhave great recognition amongst manyAustralian gardeners. The company maintains a consistently

high level of investment in breeding andtrialling new varieties. As a result, rosesreleased during the last ten to fifteenyears have greatly improved health anddisease-resistance. The release of manycompact new English Roses hasbroadened the appeal of the collection. The English Roses are not like other

roses. They quickly form magnificent, fragrant shrubs and climbers which makegreat impact in the garden. Their large, fragrant blooms have an old world charm

and allure that attracts a passionatefollowing. David Austin’s roses can befound in prestigious private and publicgardens throughout Australia. The company has won many awards,

including fifteen gold medals from TheRoyal Horticultural Society’s ChelseaFlower Show. In 2007, David Austinreceived an OBE in the Queen’s BirthdayHonours List and in 2010, he washonored as a Great Rosarian of theWorld. We have three offices worldwide and a

Roses are sold in pots all year round butmany garden centres and mail orderspecialists still sell roses as ‘bare root’,bagged or freshly potted during wintermonths. This is the time of year when thebest range of roses is available and pricesare keen.Whether you buy bare root or potted, there’s no doubt that care at planting timemakes a huge difference to how yourroses will perform. Careful soilpreparation is the key. See page 54 foradvice.

Inset:David Austin with rosa Graham Thomas (Ausmas)

Graham Thomas (Photo by permission of Jeanne Trevaskus)

David Austin’s ‘Graham Thomas’received the highest accolade in the roseworld when it was voted the World’sFavourite Rose by the World Federationof Rose Societies (WFRS). Founded in1968, the WFRS represents over 100,000rose lovers in 41 member countries. Theaward was announced at the 2009 WorldRose Convention in Vancouver, when therose was inducted into the society’s ‘RoseHall of Fame’. It holds this prestigioustitle for three years. The cup-shaped blooms of this well-

loved English Rose have an unusuallyrich, pure yellow colour which is notfound in the Old Roses and is rare, evenamong modern roses. The strong, freshtea rose fragrance received the HenryEdland medal. ‘Graham Thomas’ formsan upright, bushy shrub which can bemaintained at 1.5 x 1.25m with summerpruning. It is highly versatile and can alsobe trained as a spectacular climbing rose, ideal for a wall, rose pillar, obelisk orfence. It enjoys full sun but like all DavidAustin’s English Roses, it will alsoperform well in partial shade, provided itis not planted directly underneath thecanopy of trees. The rose was named for one of the

leading British horticulturalists of the20th century. The late Graham Thomas, born in 1909, was an enthusiasticcollector of Old Roses and a frequentvisitor to David Austin’s Nursery inAlbrighton, England.

Noble Antony in a mixed border at David Austin Rose Gardens in the UK The Renaissance Garden at David Austin Roses

MIXED BORDERSEnglish Roses are shrub roses and so look particularly at home ina mixed border; indeed, this is where most people grow them.Their sumptuous blooms provide a welcome contrast to thelighter and more airy flowers of most perennials. The softercolours of the English Roses harmonise perfectly with the coloursof most other plants. They have the great benefit of continuing toflower when many plants and shrubs are over. No rose likes toomuch competition and it is advisable to surround them with plantsthat are not too invasive. Wherever possible, we advise planting ingroups of three or more although, in small borders, single plantsare very satisfactory.

ROSE BORDERSA border of English Roses is hard to beat for sheer exuberance offlower and fragrance. The roses will flower from late spring/earlysummer through to the cooler weather of winter, providing awhole range of delicious fragrances. Some people prefer to use alimited range of harmonising colours, such as only varieties ofwhite, blush pink, pink, crimson and purple, or just white, yellow, apricot and peach - but this is in no way essential. With thesophisticated shades of the English Roses, a mixture of the wholerange of colours works wonderfully well. Always plant in groupsof three or more, if space permits, to create structure andmovement in the border and enable each variety to make adefinite statement.

ROSE BEDSThere are a number of English Roses that grow, even in the warmersummers of Australia, to no more than 1–1.3m, which makewonderful bedding roses: Darcey Bussell, Miss Alice, Molineux,Munstead Wood, Sophy’s Rose and so on. These are short andbushy and repeat-flower well. In larger beds, the range ofpossibilities becomes much wider and taller varieties can be used.

USING DAVID AUSTIN ENGLISH ROSES IN THE AUSTRALIAN GARDEN

English Roses are remarkably adaptable plants, growing inextreme climates around the world. Once they become wellestablished in the garden, which usually takes a year or so,they are remarkably drought tolerant, though they willreward extra care by being more floriferous. They can beused to excellent effect, in a wide variety of ways. Here area few suggestions that you may find helpful.

Wildeve in a large terracotta containerEglantyne, Scepter’d Isle, Jubilee Celebration and Sophy’s Rose

ROSE GARDENSFor those of us who have sufficient space, it is possible to plant arose garden entirely or partly of English Roses. This may be aconventional rose garden or perhaps two long borders facing a pathand intersected occasionally with other paths. Such a garden couldbe quite small, or something altogether more extensive.

AS CLIMBERS (PILLARS)One of the most important developments in English Roses (andespecially in Australia where the summer temperatures are higherthan in the UK) has been the use of these roses as climbing roses. They usually reach a height of about 2.5 - 3 metres, which is idealfor people who would not wish to climb tall ladders. We can viewthe blooms to perfection as they will be growing more or less at eyelevel. English Rose climbers flower freely and continuously, branching all along the stem.

STANDARD ROSESWe know of no better roses than English Roses for growing asStandard Roses. Being naturally wide and bushy, they form extralarge heads. English Standard Roses are excellent for giving heightin the garden. They may also be used as a focal point, or plantedat intervals along the edge of a path.

FOR POTS AND CONTAINERSPlants in large pots or planters on hard areas around the househave become increasingly popular in recent times. Many of us,particularly in large cities, have either very small gardens or apatio garden. English Roses, with their bushy growth, areparticularly good for this purpose.

AS A HEDGE OR FOR LINING A PATHSome of the stronger English Roses form excellent hedges. Theywill produce a mass of colour throughout the summer. Suchhedges may be used along the front of a garden facing the road, orto divide one part of the garden from another.

AS CUT FLOWERSEnglish Roses are wonderful cut flowers, although they have arelatively short vase life when cut fresh from the garden. They areless stiff in growth than most modern roses and so are perfect forcreating graceful arrangements. What better way of enjoying thebeauty and fragrance of the individual flowers than arrangingthem in a bowl for the house? An exciting development in recent years has been our release ofan entirely new type of rose, bred for cutting, with longer vase lifeand great character and charm. Our new luxury roses arewonderful for events, weddings and gift bouquets and areincreasingly available in Australia. Cut rose varieties are notavailable as plants for the garden. See p57 for more information.

English Roses are easy to grow, adaptable and highly versatile. Whengrown as shrubs, they can be used in awide variety of ways: in mixed flowerbeds, traditional rose borders or inlarge decorative planters around theyard. A massed collection of EnglishRoses looks quite superb whentrained against a long post and railfence - this is one of the many wayswe display them at our UK nursery. Some varieties make beautifulfragrant, thorny hedges, while mostare ideal for landscaping projects. In this section of the catalogue, we

have classified each variety as small, medium or large to allow easycomparison between them. Thegardener can adjust the height a rosewill reach by pruning. The heights and widths given in

the Index of Roses on pages 60 - 61are approximately the size a varietycan be expected to reach in aMelbourne or Adelaide garden withaverage pruning. In a warmer climate,or with lighter pruning, the rose willnaturally form a larger plant. Summerpruning will help maintain the desiredheight of the rose in warmer areas.

Some English Roses make the mostexcellent climbers and indeed webelieve they are, as a group, the best ofall climbing roses. They are vigorous, without being too tall, and so are easyto manage. They also have aremarkable ability to flower all theway down to the base of the plant. They are very generous with thenumber of stems they produce fromthe base and so there is plenty towork with when fanning them out ona wall, trellis or fence. They are alsoideal for obelisks, arches or pillars.

WAYS OF USING ENGLISH ROSES – HEDGES

The Alnwick® Rose

David Austin’s English Roses are veryversatile roses. Here we highlight some creativeways to use them in the garden.

English Rose hedges are very valuable inthe garden. Unlike most other hedges, theyrepeat flower prolifically, producing flushesof glorious, fragrant blooms. They haveattractive, healthy green foliage and theirthorns will act as a deterrent to intruders.

In recent years, David J.C. Austin hasdeveloped a passion for growing EnglishRoses as hedges and can frequently beheard enthusing about their great beauty. He has planted several varieties in hisprivate garden: the photograph below of‘The Alnwick® Rose’ was taken there, growing along both sides of a path.Rose hedges benefit enormously from

good feeding and watering, like any other

roses. When planting, space the shortervarieties about 50 - 75cm apart and thetaller varieties about 1m apart.Pruning hedges is very easy. English

Roses are very forgiving plants and can betrimmed using a hedge trimmer. Removeany weak or dead stems. The final heightof the hedge can be adjusted by pruningharder or more lightly. After a few years, some thinning may be required.

ENGLISH ROSES IN CONTAINERS

GraceWinchester Cathedral

Charlotte

Container gardening has never beenmorepopular. English Roses, with their longflowering season, are highly effectivecontainerised plants, bringing character andinterest to the garden. It is a great way toenjoy their beautiful, often deliciouslyfragrant flowers at close quarters.Group a number of containerised roses

together to create the impression of agarden. Place them at entrances, in seatingareas or use to decorate paths or large areasof gravel and paving. When growing English Roses, always

choose a large container (at least half a

barrel) as this will give the roots more roomto develop and help to prevent the soildrying out too quickly. Although plasticpots are lighter and easier tomove, clay pots, barrels or urns can be very attractive andwill be more stable in windy conditions. We recommend roses are planted in a

good quality potting mix. A slow releasefertiliser should be applied. Fit dripirrigation or water regularly, especiallyduring the summer when theymay need tobe watered every day. Prune back by at leasthalf when spring growth begins.

ENGLISH ROSES IN MIXED FLOWER BEDSEnglish Roses are rarely more beautiful thanwhen they are combined with otherflowering plants in the garden. All the roseslisted in the shrub section of this cataloguecan be very successfully incorporated intomixed flower beds. They generously produceflushes of blooms, providing colour andinterest over a long season. We recommendshrub roses are planted in compact groupsof the same variety to create bold splashesof colour and to balance drifts of perennials.

English Roses have some of themostcomplex and delicious fragrances of anygarden plant. Their natural, shrubby growthand graceful bushy habit makes them perfectfor themixed border. Their pure, glowingcolours harmonise with a wide range ofcompanion plants; their magnificent cuppedand rosette blooms contrasting well with theairier flowers of many perennials.Whencombined with the gardener’s favouriteflowers and shrubs, they create a wonderful

array of colour, form, texture and scent.Roses are very effective when shorter

companion plants are used around them. The taller English Roses provide height andstructure without the need for staking, whilethemore compact varieties are perfect forthe front of the border. Many of the annualsand perennials traditionally found inmixedborders attract beneficial insects into thegarden which will help to keep the roseshealthy.

ROSES FOR SPECIFIC POSITIONS

Shrub roses for shady positions:If planting in partial shade, always choose a spot that is notoverhung by the branches of trees and where there is not toomuch competition at the roots:Abraham Darby, A Shropshire Lad, Benjamin Britten, Crocus Rose,Gertrude Jekyll, Golden Celebration, Graham Thomas, Grace,Jude the Obscure, L.D. Braithwaite, Mary Rose, Pat Austin,Teasing Georgia, Tess of the d’Urbervilles, The Mayflower,Wildeve, Winchester Cathedral.

Climbers for shady positions:Most varieties of English Climbing Roses grow and flowervery well in north facing positions or areas of partial shadethat receive 3-4 hours of sun per day. We particularlyrecommend the following:A Shropshire Lad, Abraham Darby, Benjamin Britten,Crown Princess Margareta, Gertrude Jekyll, Golden Celebration,Graham Thomas,Teasing Georgia, Tess of the d’Urbervilles, ThePilgrim.

Climbers for pillars, obelisks or arches:Always consider the height of the structure when selectingroses to grow against them. All the English Climbing Roses aresuitable, especially:A Shropshire Lad, Claire Austin, Crown Princess Margareta,Falstaff, Gertrude Jekyll, Golden Celebration, Graham Thomas,Jude the Obscure, Strawberry Hill, Teasing Georgia, Tess of thed’Urbervilles, The Pilgrim.

Roses with the strongest fragrance:English Roses are renowned for the strength and complexity oftheir fragrances, which include Old Rose, Tea Rose, musk, myrrh and fruity, or may be a delicious blend. Here are someof the best:Abraham Darby, Claire Austin, Crown Princess Margareta,Evelyn, Gertrude Jekyll, Golden Celebration, Jubilee Celebration,Jude the Obscure, Munstead Wood, Pat Austin, PrincessAlexandra of Kent, Scepter’d Isle, Sharifa Asma, Strawberry Hill,William Shakespeare 2000, Young Lycidas.

We are often asked to recommend roses for different purposes inthe garden. Here is a list of roses you might like to consider, although there are other varieties which will also perform well.

The Renaissance Garden

Roses for bedding:Ambridge Rose, Charlotte, Darcey Bussell, Mary Rose, Molineux,Sophy’s Rose, Winchester Cathedral.

Thornless roses:These roses are completely thornless, or nearly so. Thesevarieties can all be grown as shrubs or trained as climbers:A Shropshire Lad, Heritage, Tea Clipper.

Garden roses for cutting:Almost any double-flowered rose is suitable for cutting tocreate arrangements for the home. Roses are very beautifulwhen cut freshly from the garden, but have a very short vaselife, so we recommend that they are plunged in a bucket ofwater as soon as they have been cut to help extend their lives. These are some of our favourites:Brother Cadfael, Charlotte, Eglantyne, Golden Celebration,Graham Thomas, Jubilee Celebration, L.D. Braithwaite,Molineux, Noble Antony, Sir John Betjeman, Tess of thed’Urbervilles, The Alnwick Rose, William Shakespeare 2000.

A listing of our new luxury cut roses can be found on page 57.Please note that these are only available as stems for bouquets, events and weddings, not as garden plants.

English Standard Roses:Standard Roses (sometimes known as Stem Roses) are a greatway to add height to a border or can be used as specimens in alawn or on either side of a path. English Roses have a naturalgrowth habit and beautiful fragrant flowers, making themideally suited to being grown in this way. In a large bed, agroup of three or four planted closely together can be veryeffective. Here are some of our favourites:Golden Celebration, Grace, Mary Rose, Molineux, The AlnwickRose, The Endeavour, William Shakespeare 2000, Windermere.

HedgesRoses make excellent hedges either as impenetrable barriers oras very floriferous internal boundaries within a garden.Shorter hedges form an attractive dividing wall, while tallerhedges may require support from a fence or wire netting. Please see page 48 for more information. Here are some of ourfavourite hedging roses:Anne Boleyn, Charlotte, Crocus Rose, Darcey Bussell, L. D.Braithwaite, Mary Rose, Molineux, Munstead Wood, Sophy’s Rose,Scepter’d Isle, Strawberry Hill, Teasing Georgia, The Alnwick Rose,The Mayflower.

Roses are easy to grow and remarkablytolerant. To achieve good results, it is onlynecessary to get a few basic points right. However, roses will respond well to extracare and attention by being more floriferousand healthy. Here is our care advice for homegardeners.

PLANTING TIMEContainerised roses can be planted allyear round, although extra attention towatering will be required in hot spellsuntil the roses are well established.

PLANTING POSITIONSelect a site with at least four hours ofsun each day, although in areas with hotsummers shade from the afternoon suncan be beneficial. Generally roses willnot flourish where their roots are incompetition with the roots of otherplants, especially trees and hedges.

PLANTING DISTANCESIf you have the space English Roses looksuperb planted in groups of three ormore of one variety. They will then growtogether to form one dense shrub, whichwill provide a more continuous displayand make a more definite statement inthe border. Depending on the varietiesand your climate we suggest plantingabout 1m apart within the group, leaving1 – 1.5m between plants of neighbouringvarieties.

SOIL TYPERoses will grow in a wide range of soils, but they do appreciate good soilpreparation. The addition of well rottedmanure or garden compost beforeplanting will help ensure strong growth.

PLANTINGContainerised roses should be soaked for30 minutes or so just prior to planting. On arrival plant the bare root roses assoon as possible, never allowing the rootsto dry out. When planted, the base ofthe stems should be about 3" belowground level in cold winter areas and atground level in milder areas. Ifimmediate planting is impossible, keepthe roses in the sealed box in a cold butfrost free place or heel the roses in.Water generously until the plant is wellestablished. We recommend the use ofDavid Austin’s ‘Start’.

PLANTING IN CONTAINERSSee page 49 for information on this.

FEEDING, MULCHING ANDWATERING

Feeding, generous mulching andoccasional deep watering will helpencourage strong growth and moreflowers. Mulch in spring, preferably usingwell rotted manure or garden compost.

HEALTHY ROSESThe best way to keep your roses healthyis to choose disease resistant varieties andgrow them as well as possible. ExcessiveNitrogen can make roses moresusceptible to both pests and diseases. However, an occasional spray can help, the most effective being at the start ofthe season before symptoms develop.Beware of frosts the night after spraying -they will scorch the leaves badly. Thereare different chemicals and lawsrestricting their use, so we recommendthat you seek the latest advice from yourgarden centre team, nursery or local rosesociety.

WINTER PRUNINGPruning is very easy. The recommendedtime to prune is in July and August. Onall plants, remove very weak, old andwoody and dead and diseased stems.

English Shrub RosesPrune back by between 1/3 and 2/3,depending on what height you would likeyour rose to reach next season. Each yearremove some of the older stems toencourage fresh, new growth from the base.

English Climbing RosesThe previous year’s flowering shootsshould be reduced to 3 or 4 buds orabout 10 – 15cm and the strong, newstems tied in, cutting out older ones asnecessary.

DEAD-HEADINGUnless you particularly desire the wintercolour that hips provide, we recommendthat you aim to prevent hips fromforming as these tend to reduce repeat-flowering. Dead-heading is the removalof spent flowers, which might otherwisego on to form hips. This not onlyencourages repeat-flowering, but alsomakes a tidier plant. Either remove justthe dead flower, or cut the stems down tothe first full leaf.

SUMMER PRUNINGIn warm climates it may be beneficial tosummer prune by cutting back most ofthe spent flowering shoots about 50cm,leaving just about 15cm. This can berepeated through the season as the roserepeat flowers and will encourage morecompact growth and quicker repeat-flowering.
