Sound experience by
“To be honest, I did not expect the exhibition in the Groninger Museum to be as successful as it was. To me it seems a huge achievement.”
Geoffrey Marsh, V&A
Exactly 201.301 people came to see David Bowie is at the Groninger Museum from 10 December 2015 to 10 April 2016. That figure puts Groningen in second place behind London in the list of cities in which the exhibition was presented and tops visitor numbers in large cities like Chicago, Paris, Berlin, Toronto, São Paolo and Melbourne. We are happy and proud that we were able to bring this exhibition to the Netherlands and to share the expe-rience David Bowie is with our visitors. The exhibition spoke to the imagination, not only of Bowie fans but also of the general public. David Bowie is has enjoyed great popularity since it opened in December 2015. Many people saw the show multiple times. “I’m going for the third time on Wednes-day,” wrote one. “I think it’s a fantastic exhibition. I’m really becoming a Bowie fan again.” Numerous activities were also organized outside the Groninger Museum. In a joint project with the museum,
the Dutch national railways sent a train with a David Bowie carriage from Zwolle to Groningen every week-end in January. Virtual reality glasses allowed passen-gers to take an imaginary trip through Bowie’s world. The North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra staged a special series of concerts and the Groninger Forum cinema screened a series of Bowie films at weekends during the exhibition. Shops in Groningen’s city centre competed in a Bowie window display contest. The Noorderlicht photo gallery exhibited 1970s concert photos. The Dutch Comics Museum displayed comics, drawings and illustrations inspired by the character Ziggy Stardust. The Groninger Museum thanks all its partners, especial-ly the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, for their cooperation in the presentation of this exhibition.
This will last with us the longest. Andreas Blühm, Director
