No Surprise - Daughtry

Camera• The first shot we see in the video a long shot of a quarry slowing moving closer

onto the machinery. The shot then quickly goes onto a close up shot of a man playing the guitar and in the shot you can only see his hands and the guitar. When the lyrics start the shot turns to a pickup truck driving into that same quarry and a man getting out and applying for a job but getting turned down. The style of music fits very well with this part of the video because it is quite slow paced and calm at the beginning of the song. The shot quickly keeps flicking from shots of the man applying for a job at the quarry and shots of the band and Daughtry stood on top of the machinery singing. In the video after the man is denied a job Daughtry (the lead singer) drives past the man and worker in an open top convertible which is a typical American style car. The shot flicks from the man to Daughtry and the ban quite often because the lyrics talk of a man who is trying everything and has practised everything to try and get a job which is an emotional thing and the camera shows this. As it flicks you get to see emotion on Daughtrys face almost as if he is feeling it. You also get the impression that he is there when this is happening because in the video bits of the band they are in the same quarry.

Mise en scene• The Mise en scene is key to this video because it is giving the impression of a

tough life in America an the video is how it shows the strong American influences.

• The first shot of Daughtry playing the guitar is a good opening shot because the type of guitar he is playing is stereotypically seen as an American guitar.

• When the man applying for a job drives up to the quarry he drives up in a knackered pickup truck, pickups are seen as THE American car and give the strong influence of the video being set in a rural America.

• In the first part of the video the only background you see whether it be behind the man or with the band is the quarry. This is key because this is the base of all of the song and sets the scene for the rest of the whole video.

Sound• The sound element of this song is very good as the sound used makes it sound

almost live. The first few moments of the song is like the sound is a distance away and is drawing closer when the song properly begins.

• The sound techniques they have used focus heavily on the vocals of the song and the bands music sounds almost as it is in the back ground.

• This is good because the song wants you to focus on the lyrics to understand the video and see the link between them.

Lighting• The lighting used in the video is very clever because they have used lighting to

the effect that it gives all of the video the illusion of being in real life and shot in real sunlight. When the shot is on the band you can see glare from the sun on the lens and gives the impression that are really at a quarry singing in real life and time.
