Thursday, September 8th, A.D. 2011
The Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Mother Miriam of the Lamb of God! How wonderful. How did so much happen in 9 months since your last newsletter at Christmas?! The last thing we heard is that you were packing up to leave St. Louis without a forwarding address (like Abraham of old J). Yes, dear Zelda. Blessed be God, soon after the mailing of the Christmas newsletter, I met with a most holy and wonderful shepherd of the flock: His Excellency Edward James Slattery, Bishop of the Diocese of Tul-sa, Oklahoma. Bishop Slattery subsequently invited me to Tulsa to lay the foundation of the Daughters of Mary, Mother of Israel’s Hope. So much has happened since then, including the purchase of a wonderful 3-bed-room house to serve as our first priory (the Benedictine term for convent) in Tulsa. It needs a bit of work to be sure, but it will be a fine beginning and has a very large side and back yard in which we hope to expand, as our Lord provides, and add a 2-story annex to hold another 30 or so sisters. That’s fantastic, Sister Ros – I mean, Mother Miriam J. But do you have the resources to do all that? No, not at present. But our Lord does. If this most thrill-ing venture is of God – and He appears to be confirming His will at every turn - the Lord will provide, just as He did for Abraham.
It’s all thrilling! How can we help? Can you tell us what you need at present, financially or otherwise? We want to be a part of this great venture, hoping that, as you grow, you might be able to establish convents—or, should I say, priories—in our cities also!Truly I would love that. This first priory can use some expansion of its kitchen, bath and laundry facilities, a new water heater, some window replacement, room dividers to form cells, some electrical rewiring and grounding, a retaining wall in the front yard and fence in back, some work to convert the “sun room” into a chapel, and sundry repairs. We’ve already painted and carpeted the house, installed window blinds and some office equipment. It sounds like a lot, and it is. However, we have an unbe-
lievably wonderful group of families and volunteers who have already done much of the labor. It is the cost of ma-terials that we very much need your assistance with - not to mention the cost of the house itself! That includes the purchase price of the house: $65,000 which is less than half its current worth - minus a very generous donation of $25,000. That leaves $40,000 for the house/priory, plus an estimated $90,000 for materi-
als and repairs.
That’s not too bad! We can hardly wait to come visit! Where and how can we send contributions? I forgot, are
you tax deductible? And will you begin “Come & See” weekends? Yes, we will begin planning “Come & See” weekends as soon as possible and let all who have applied and have waited so patiently through many months, and, in many cases, two years!, know the dates that will be available for the initial 4-day visits. With regard to contributions: yes, we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, so that all gifts are tax deduct-ible. Donations may be made online through our web-site or by check, payable to Daughters of Mary, MIH, and mailed to our new address at 466 S. 79th East Av-enue, Tulsa, OK 74112.
You know, Mother Miriam, as happy as I am for you and for the new community, I truly wish I could have been there to witness your vows and reception of the habit for which you have waited sooo long.Thank you, dear Zelda. Others have shared your senti-ments as well. I did not anticipate that this most glori-ous day of my life would take place in such a beautiful, yet humble and private setting. I’ve included, on the last page of this newsletter, a letter, written initially to Bob Moynihan of Inside the Vatican Magazine, with thoughts that flooded my heart on the sacred “hiddeness” of that day. However, I’ve included in what follows, and for all to see, a reprint of the entire Rite of Clothing in the Holy Habit and Profession of my Triennial Vows. I am still basking in the beauty of that never-ending day.

Fall 2011 Page 12
Truly beautiful.Thank you, dear Zelda. As I returned to our Priory from the Benedictine Monastery of Our Lady of the Cenacle in Tulsa where the entire liturgy took place, thoughts of the “small and private nature” of the Incarnation flooded my heart, and I wrote this note to Bob Moynihan who pub-lishes Inside the Vatican Magazine. Bob included it in his newsflash of that momentous occasion: (http://www.icontact-...WTTNbQ9swuQ?w=1). I include it here as well to express the beauty that, to this day, remains and, I pray, ever will:
Letter from Mother Miriam of the Lamb of God
September 9, 2011I’ve just experienced what possibly is the most glorious day of my life. It is difficult for me to recall a more deeply beautiful, heav-enly occasion than the taking of my religious habit, name, and triennial vows on Septem-ber 8, 2011, the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.I think it is not inaccurate to say that I have lived with a deep longing to belong to God, in a way I could not define, my entire life, though, as a young girl growing up in a Jewish family in Brooklyn, I had no idea Who the Bridegroom was for Whom I longed, nor could I have fathomed a God of such incalculable love and condescension. It was suggested by a good, wise and holy spiritual direc-tor, that the occasion of these, my first vows, take place in a small, humble, quiet setting, and that, my permanent, solemn vows three years hence would be “an ecclesial event.” And so it was: the most glorious day of my life, the fulfillment of long-awaited desires, came to fruition at last, at last, in the small, beautiful Monastery of Our Lady of the Cenacle in Tulsa, under the blessed direction of Dom Mark Daniel Kirby, O.S.B., Prior, together with His Excellency, Bishop Edward James Slattery presiding. Heaven flooded that small monastery which held about 15 in attendance, among whom were priests, religious broth-ers and sisters, and several oblates of the monastery.
I arrived back in the newly named “Priory of Our Lady of Guadalupe” (our first house in Tulsa) with two new Postulants and with feet that barely touched the ground. My heart was flooded with thoughts of the Incarnation. Did not the most glorious, most momentous event in the history of mankind – the birth of the King of kings, of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Whom no man could look upon and live) – take place in a small, humble, quiet setting: a stable, a manger, a feeding troth, with not even 15 people in attendance?
And was not the Cross that followed 33 years hence, the Cross upon which the Lamb came to die, indeed an “ec-clesial event” – not only be-fore the multitude on Calvary, but a thousand times more so as that once-for-all eternal sacrifice is brought through time and down on every altar throughout the world, to the end of time?To my solemn vows three years from now, our dear Lord willing, I will invite “the whole world.” But I cannot imagine it being more glori-ous than this first (formal) “I do” given through the Shep-
herd of Tulsa to the Bridegroom of my soul. In the words of a favorite hymn of old:
Were the whole realm of nature mine That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.
__________________________________
My love and thanksgiving to all of you who have prayed for us these past three years and who have sent notes of praise to our God for the momentous events of Sep-tember 8th. How grateful too I am for your continued prayers and support as we gather the needed resources for our first home in Tulsa - the “Priory of Our Lady of Guadalupe” - and reach out through the streets to every living soul, but especially to families, with the love of God and the truths of His glorious Church!
