ATTENDANCE – AGAIN! I know that the term ‘Every Day Matters’ is well understood by nearly everyone in our school community and that some of you (probably many of you) are thinking ‘Here we go again’ - but here I am pondering our attendance figures and knowing that the end of term is near and that often means a ‘drop off’ in attendance. So the following is just a reminder why coming to school on a regular basis is really important for your child.

So Why Is Attendance At School So Important?

If a child of compulsory school age is registered at a school it is essential that they attend their school regularly and maintain a pattern of good attendance throughout their school career. Excellent attendance at school is important to allow a child or young person to fulfil their potential.

Below are just some of the key reasons why it is so important children attend school:

To learn.

To have fun.

To make new friends.

To experience new things in life.

To develop awareness of other cultures, religion, ethnicity and gender differences.

To achieve.

To gain qualifications.

To develop new skills.

To build confidence and self-esteem.

To have the best possible start in life.

We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. But, we also know that when students miss too much school – regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically. Your child is less likely to succeed if he or she does not have regular attendance (90% or more).

Family Holidays

You can demonstrate your commitment to your child’s education by not taking holidays during term time. Any child or young person who is absent from school due to a holiday will miss out on important learning and will fall behind with their school work. In each Academic Year there are only a maximum of 190 statutory school days – this allows plenty of time for holidays to be arranged outside term time. Holidays taken during term time will be categorised as an unauthorised absence.

Clearly, Going To School Regularly Matters!

We don’t want your child to fall behind in school and get discouraged. Please ensure that your child attends school every day and arrives on time. Here are a few practical tips to help support regular attendance:

Make sure your children keep a regular bedtime, and establish a morning routine. Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before. Ensure your children go to school every day unless they are truly sick. Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session. Talk to teachers for advice if your children feel anxious about going to school.

Our vision is to provide a supportive and engaging environment enabling students to become successful individuals in a changing society

Young people who regularly miss school without good reason are more likely to become isolated from their friends, to underachieve in examinations and/or become involved in anti-social behaviour.

Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbour, or another parent to take your child to school.

Let us knowhow we can best support you and your children so that they can show up for school on time every day.

Karen Tabner

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

A Boy Named Cash

Our Year 5 students were invited to an early performance of ‘A Boy Named Cash’, a tribute show to Johnny Cash, hosted by the Shire of Yilgarn. Most students returned enthusiastic about music and enjoyed the show. Thank you to the Shire for offering this opportunity for our students.

NAPLAN

Our student NAPLAN data has recently been released, and while further analysis is required, initial results appear positive from a school perspective. As always, there is room for growth and over the next few months we will unpack the information it provides, in conjunction with classroom assessments, to plan for the ‘where to next?’.

Parent reports are still being printed by the School’s Curriculum and Standards Authority and are anticipated to be ready for distribution by our school in the coming weeks. I would encourage all parents to review the data that these tests provide and acknowledge the benefits of a progress update, with the understanding that it reflects one aspect of your child on a given day. I would encourage all parents reviewing results with students to focus on any positive aspects as well as identified areas for improvement.

OLNA

Our senior secondary students have been completing their OLNA assessments over the last couple of weeks. We have been impressed by the effort that they have all been putting in and we wish them the best as we eagerly await their results.

Student Leadership Day

Our student leaders will be attending a leadership day in Beverley on the 13 th of September. The day will provide them with an insight into leadership strategies and encourage them to be the best leaders that they can possibly be.

As we head into Term 4, we will begin to look at Student Leader nominations and review what we are currently offering in this student leadership space.

Michael Everett
