On Tuesday 1 May, FunKids will begin their service with our school. Jones Mi, the owner of FunKids, has been in touch several times to talk about our school, our philosophies, our environment, previous care workers, but above all, our students and community. On that first Tuesday (1 May) he will hold a general community meeting at 5.30pm in our hall, to answer any of the questions you may have. Also included in this newsletter, are the enrolment forms for FunKids. Completing these forms now before the start of Term 2 will allow for a seamless transition for your child. Please complete the enrolment forms and hand them into the office – we will keep them in a folder for Jones to collect. We certainly look forward to FunKids starting, it will be a new start from enthusiastic, experienced people and cheaper rates as well. Here is an introduction letter Jones has put together for our community. Dear Families, I am delighted to introduce myself to you. My name is Jones and I am the director at Fun Kids OSHC. It is a great honour to be part of the Lidcombe Public School community. We are very excited and are looking forward to meeting all the families and children. Beginning from Tuesday 1 May 2018, Fun Kids OSHC will be providing before and after school care as well as vacation care at Lidcombe Public School. We thank the current provider Anatolian for their wonderful work and contribution to the school. We will continue with the tradition and call our centre the Lidcombe OSHC. We are currently hiring educators for Lidcombe OSHC and I am pleased to say that children will be happy to see a few familiar faces. As part of the transition process, new parents and parents who are currently using the before and after school care services are required to complete a new enrolment form. I would like to thank Mr. Lewis who has been very kind to include our enrolment form in the school newsletter even though it is six pages long. Alternatively, parents may wish to complete the enrolment form online via our website www.funkids.com.au. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me on 0403 018 038 or you may wish to drop me a quick email at [email protected]. Once again, I am very excited and am looking forward to meeting you all from 1 May! Sincerely yours, Jones Mi

Farewell Mr. Hulley Mr. Hulley, classroom teacher of S2S, will be starting at a new school next term after receiving a transfer to be closer to home. His new school is Lindfield East PS and we will certainly miss him dearly. His organisation of different programs around the school has been nothing short of outstanding, with always having an eye to the future, setting programs up with checklists for anyone new to take over easily. Also missed, will be his enthusiasm and energy as a great classroom teacher, taking his class to new heights with outstanding project based work which I was fortunate to be a judge for many times. We wish Mr. Hulley all the best at his new school. S2S will be taken by Mr. Creighton, who has been with us for a while now as a teacher of EALD – he will do an outstanding job.

Hats Hats are becoming an issue within our school again. As a school community, we all need to be aware of the rules surrounding our school hats. 1. If a child has no hat outside, they are instructed to

play in the shade. If they defy this instruction, they

can be put onto detention.

2. Years K-4 are permitted to wear the Legionnaires

type cap (with a flap) or the bucket type hat.

Students are not to fold the flap inside the cap at

any time – the purpose of the flap is to protect

your children.

3. Years 5 and 6 get to wear a special cap. No other

grade will be permitted to wear this cap.

4. School Uniform Policy dictates that a school hat

must be worn. Please ensure that your child places

their school hat in their bag overnight so they don’t

forget it. If they lose their hat, we expect that it will

be replaced at your earliest convenience.

Thank you for your support in this matter.

P&C Meeting Our first two P&C meetings have been very well attended with around 15-20 parents coming. I must say it is a delight going to P&C Meetings, as they are very productive and have a friendly atmosphere - I really enjoy speaking to all of the parents before and after the meeting. Our next meeting is next Monday 9 April at 7pm in our staffroom, where JohnStaff (managers of the building process) will come in to explain a lot more about the new buildings coming to our school.

Excellent work – S3T ! Wonderful work from S3T students (Esther, Tori, Ceylin and Zara) who demonstrated, through the use of an Ozobot, a navigation through the Willa Wonka and the Chocolate Factory book using a track (for the Ozobot to follow) and a pictorial representation of the major parts of the book. Outstanding work girls !

Stunning pieces of work from the Art class ! Miss An and Mrs Chau have started Art Class and some of the work in this initiative is unbelievable to say the least. Once we have created all of these artworks, we will have them up for auction at Family Fun Night. Simply put though, these pieces will be serious art items to buy, take a look at this porcelain plate painting by Silvia Chen – just fantastic !!!

More fabulous art from Art Class Boy, do we have some talent in this school or what? Wonderful pieces of art by Esther, Elena, Aileen and Fatima. Talent is coming out of our ears here at Lidcombe PS!

Canteen Culture I want to re-iterate to our whole community what a fabulous job Healthy Kids Cucina Canteen are doing within our school. Beautiful, healthy food is being served and it’s very fresh. What I want to mention is the behaviour around buying from the canteen. Some stage 3 boys thought it would be fun to buy as much junk as they could, before sending others back to the canteen to do the same thing. This is a silly practice and it must stop. I have spoken to the boys in question and they know how I feel. I also spoke to all of stage 3. At our canteen, students will only buy for themselves and not anyone else. Students will buy a reasonable amount of food. Students will not be allowed to keep their own personal ‘tab’ at the canteen. Wherever possible, students will mainly eat ‘green’ items or healthy items on the canteen menu.

Car Parks / Parking Unfortunately, I must stress this particular point again, but in any case our new Kindergarten mums and dads might not be aware of this either. The car parking facilities (the Staff car park at end of Mills Street and the two located off Doodson Ave) must not be used by parents or carers to park in or walk through. Quite a few parents have been seen parking in our grounds or behaving in an unsafe manner outside the school, (mostly parents that know the rules !) but the fact is that if everyone started parking in our grounds, we would be seriously compromising the safety of the students. Please ensure you drop your child(ren) off outside the school in a safe manner or walk your children to and from school using the pedestrian access points, not through the car park. Other parents and local resdients have complained about our parents double parking in Doodson Ave and Mills St., or even parking over resident’s driveways. What is happening is extremely dangerous and stupid, with students getting out of cars from the wrong side of the car into oncoming traffic. Please do not double park to let your children out. It is against the law and I have no problem contacting the authorities and giving them your license plate number if you are doing the wrong thing out there. If you are doing the wrong thing, you will be fined ! I would really appreciate your assistance in this matter.

Just a reminder The earliest time students should arrive at school is 8.30am. Any earlier than this means that I can’t guarantee their safety as a teacher will not be on the playground to supervise students until 8.30am. Please ensure your children arrive no earlier than 8.30am for their safety’s sake. PSC launch with S3F I seem to have a lot to do with S3F at the moment, but let me tell you, they were fantastic representatives at the Premier’s Sporting Challenge launch last week. After winning the right to go along through Adam Mhajer’s success in the handball competition, S3F experienced table tennis, netball, tennis, rugby skills, soccer – and at the end they were given a PSC backpack full of goodies ! Certainly well deserved as their behaviour was exceptional. Well done S3F !

Congratulations Billy !!! Well done to Billy Soliola, who whilst representing Auburn/Parramatta/Merrylands Zone PSSA in Rugby League yesterday, was successful in gaining a place in the Sydney West PSSA 11 years Rugby League Squad (28 people selected and they will be culled to 17 in the holidays). This is a fantastic achievement as Rugby League is a very popular sport, especially in Western Sydney and certainly a highly sought after representative jumper, let’s hope he makes the final

Page 5: DATES TO REMEMBER · Ceylin and Zara) who demonstrated, through the use of an Ozobot, a navigation through the Willa Wonka and the Chocolate Factory book using a track (for the Ozobot

squad. By the way, Elizabeth and Leo were outstanding performers in the team as well as their team made the semis, beaten by eventual winners Mt Druitt.

Closing the main school gate

If you are visiting the school during school hours and coming through the main school gate, please make sure the gate is closed behind you when you enter and when you leave to avoid a quick and easy exit for some of our younger students. We have a student in our school who is a flight risk, so this issue is very important !!! Also, we are keeping the pool gate near the Uniform Shop closed as well – please ensure when you walk through it, you close it behind you !

Hat Parade Wow, what an amazing event! Well done to all the students and the teachers for providing a great afternoon of colour, culture and fun! I loved all of the hats that were made as they either related to the topic the students were learning about, the book they were reading or represented their culture – how good were those cultural hats from China, Korea, Turkey and Lebanon??? We need more of it I say! Thanks to all the parents that came along, our biggest hat parade yet. Well done to Miss Delis who organised the whole event and to her DJ off-sider, Miss Siu who organised the music.

Communication Strategy I have heard a few rumblings throughout our school community about early communication and as a result, we as a school have come up with a communication strategy, one that should cover all major platforms and with a few hints we can give you about social media and general communication, we hope that everyone will get the messages they need to get nice and early. We will now operate platforms through: *Facebook *Twitter *Our website *Team App (replacing School App) *LED Board *Sentral – Parent Portal (coming soon) One thing we cannot physically do for you all is refresh the pages you have been viewing. Notifications do not always come out in a timely manner, so please ensure you visit these sites regularly and refresh the pages – don’t rely on notifications being sent to you on time. Make sure you see the “Communication Strategy” page within this newsletter, with hints on how you can download these apps.

Platinum Awards Being Green suggests that your child is behaving very well and is doing what our teachers expect of them in the classroom and the playground. Recipients for: Week 9: Chloe Yip (S2S) Week 10: Sydney Duchstein-Shrestha (S2H) Well done girls !

Newsletter All newsletters are emailed to our families each fortnight. Electronic distribution is a much better method of communication with families as it allows the school community to enjoy great images of students in full colour without the environmental impact of substantial paper usage.

EMAIL ADDRESS UPDATE NEWSLETTER

My email address has changed. Please update your records. Name of Child: ____________________ Class: ______________ Name of Parents: ___________________ Email address:-__________________________ Please hand in to Mrs Rush in the office as soon as possible.

For our new Kindergarten parents….. Our new Kindergarten students have settled in well and have begun their great journey for learning in the primary years with great enthusiasm. Just a couple of reminders are below to help you make your child as successful as possible: *All students need to wear closed in shoes – no sandals or thongs ! *All students must be wearing a school hat outside as part of our Sun Safe policy. They are only $15 at our uniform shop. PLEASE make sure you label all hats with your child’s name. *It is summer at the moment, so jumpers are probably not a wise thing to dress your children in. Put the jumper in your child’s bag if you are worried. *We have a program called “Crunch and Sip” happening at 10am in the classrooms. Your child needs a small portion of fruit (bite-sized) and water to drink every day for this activity. Please see further information regards Crunch and Sip in this newsletter. *Please ensure that you pack an appropriate amount of lunch to eat each day. We have witnessed some Kindergarten students take almost the whole of their lunch break to consume what they have for lunch. Play time is important too.

Principal

Did you know???

For the safety of all students, toddlers, babies and adults, please do not bring dogs into the school grounds, even on leashes. Some children have a genuine fear and it can be quite distressing for them as well as for parents, particularly those with very young children. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Under the Companion Animals Act

1998 No 87 (14.1.e), dogs are

prohibited in school grounds,

(whether or not they are leashed

or otherwise controlled).

Students MUST NOT arrive at school before 8:30 am and must leave promptly at 3:00 pm

SCHOOL TIMES Parents are reminded that school supervision exists between 8:30 am and 3:00 pm. A Before and After School Care facility is provided on the school site for parents needing child minding. Contact 9749 2817 after school hours for further details.

Leaving students unsupervised on school grounds has legal implications for both the school and parents.

Access to the school is only possible via the pedestrian gate near the sandpit (Mills Street) during school hours. All visitors must report to the school office. Unauthorised persons on school premises are considered to be trespassing and will be reported to the police.

BREAKFAST CLUB Breakfast Club really seems to have taken off this year which is fabulous. We are seeing 100+ children attend each week to grab a free breakfast. A huge thankyou to the mums who have been helping out each week – Sonia Lopes, Irma Hill, Katie Trenh, Ghinwa Zreika, Lauia Patu and Janine Duchstein- Shrestha – you are all legends. We have also been very lucky to have some of the students from 3/6 Ruby helping us serve the last few weeks and what a great help they have been! It’s never too late to get a Breakfast Club Card for your child – just come and see us at the office and we can organise one. Come and say hi next Thursday and every Thursday morning during school terms – 8.30am to 8.55am.

DISABLED PARKING SPOT Please be aware that we have two students in wheelchairs this year and it is very important that the Disabled Parking spot at the diagonal parking in Mills Street is not used by anyone who does not have a permit to park in this spot. Cost of the fines for parking without a permit range from $549 and one demerit point to $659.
