At the July meeting, we plan to make sure that all the Committee understands his/her role as Trustee of your U3A – we will let you know how we get on! After the summer break we must look at Data Protection. We made a start on this last year but we need to update some of our documentation to make sure, as a U3A , we change our Lawful Basis to meet the new Data Protection requirements. We are hoping we only need two meetings for this – again we will keep you updated. Our final task for this year is to look again at our constitution and update it. This must be ready to present to you at the AGM in April 2020. As well as these essential jobs we will of course be planning vital occasions such as the Christmas lunch and the Group leaders’ celebratory meal. I hope this will inform you of the work of the Committee on your behalf – please contact me if you want/need any further information. Jean H Chair June 2019

From the Chair Hello everyone In the coming year the Committee has three major ‘tasks’.

AUTUMN OUTING TO WESTONBIRT ARBORETUM

We are hoping to arrange an outing to Westonbirt Arboretum in the autumn. The proposed date is Friday 25th October when the trees should have their best colours. Because the Arboretum is so popular at that time I will need to book as soon as possible. Could you let me know if you wish to come as soon as possible please. As soon as I have numbers, I will be able to arrange the coach and, thus, work out the cost. I will then let you know and ask for the money so that we can pay Westonbirt by the end of August. This will take some arranging as we do not generally meet in August so I must crave your indulgence to enable the trip to take place. Denis Long (01297 22900 / [email protected]

GROUP NEWS

Some Groups looking to expand. Interested -

got a friend? See Below for details

THE BOOK CLUB The Book Group is now full again, but if enough members are interested it may be possible to start a second group. (Group Leader will be needed!) We continue to source our books from the Library, at a cost of £60 per year and have had a wide selection this year, from "The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock" by Imogen Hermes Gowar, (Excellent), to "Call the Midwife" by Jenny Worth, (much enjoyed), "The Sellout" by Paul Beatty, (too American!) and "How to Measure a Cow" by Margaret Forster. This was her last book and possibly just a Draft we felt. Our discussions are always lively and interesting - but not always about the Book!

PLAY READING Since the play reading group is up to strength, Kate has agreed that she would be willing to start a second play reading group. A number of people have expressed an interest in this and so Kate is asking people who would like to be involved to contact her so that she can see possible numbers and begin the process of deciding a suitable day and time for meeting. The idea of a play reading group is explained entirely by the title. Members gather and, taking parts, sight read

a play. The types of plays vary enormously from classics of the theatre to light farces. Kate has created a very friendly way of sharing parts and allowing everyone to contribute and have fun. You can contact Kate on 01297 24280 or if you prefer you can email me at [email protected] and I will pass on your message to Kate. From Group Co-ordinator

MUSIC APPRECIATION The group will be meeting in August this year at the usual time and place. New members are always very welcome and if you wish to know more please speak to Denis Long. Our sessions last from 2.30- 4.30pm on the

Third Thursday of the month and we listen to recordings on a theme. Whilst the music is "classical" there is great variety as any of the existing members will tell you. The themes for the rest of this year are: July - Relax in the Garden August - All British September - French Fancies October - Choral Classics November - Handel December - no meeting

MOORLAND WALKING Our most recent walk was in May when six of us walked up to Haytor, on to Black Hill and then on to Hound

Tor.before walking back to the Haytor car park. En route we saw a medieval settlement near Hound Tor and walked along a disused tramway which was used to transport the granite from the Haytor Down mine to Stover Canal about 10 miles away. Unusually the tramway used shaped granite to form the track rather than metal rails. For further information about our next walk contact Mark Ingham on 07526 747712,

CRIBBAGE This group enjoys friendly games of crib. Depending on numbers we play partner crib or singles. After a couple of games we have a well-earned cup of tea before a final game. We usually meet on the fourth Monday of the month. For further information contact Mark Ingham on 07526 747712

PEOPLE IN HISTORY The People in History Group meets on the third Wednesday of the month and covers all periods of History, modern and ancient, British and overseas. We even find time to fit in a tea break. We have been going now for just over 3 years and have built up a loyal membership. However there is still room for more so if you would like to join us, then just contact me Sandy Caple via my number on the web page and we can

have a chat. You would be very welcome."

PHOTOGRAPHY

In the spirit of Brexit, 2 of our members have recently ‘exited’ to Oxfordshire, but the ‘remainers’ are still going strong. So far in 2019, our photo days have taken us to Haynes motor Museum, Lyme

Regis and Wells Cathedral, with July’s outing set for Stover Park (just south of Dartmoor, next door to Trago Mills). Each outing is on the first Tuesday in the month (June’s was cancelled because of weather, - so much for flaming June!) We also hold a meeting towards the end of the month to look at the results of that month’s outing and talk over any lessons to be learned. Hopefully, some of the group will be on the October U3A trip to Westonbirt Arboretum to capture the beautiful colour of autumn, so hopefully we can show the results at the next AGM. Derek Thompson

This is the first edition in a new format of the Seaton U3A Newsletter. Like all new initiatives there are likely to be glitches – which we hope will be small and easily sorted. Janet Young and Clive Wormleighton are working jointly to produce the Newsletter. Janet will be the focal point for receiving news and information and for distribution and Clive will be concerned with editing and producing the newsletter. We hope to produce three or four editions a year – with luck. NB. This newsletter consists of three sides of A4 that can be read on-screen or printed. For the latter you can save paper by double –side printing – see your printer settings – set to double side or duplex printing .
