IN NEWS Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Mandhan - (PM-SYM) Yojana – 2019

Exam point of view: Part of: Government welfare scheme and policies.

Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Mandhan is a 2019 scheme introduced by Government of

India for poor laborers in the unorganized sector from minimum 18 years of age to maximum 40

years. Under the scheme, a monthly pension of ₹3,000 (US$42) per month is provided to workers

in the unorganized sector over 60 years of age. However, to benefit from the scheme, workers

have to contribute ₹55 monthly (for age 18) and it varies according to age. Maximum contribution

for a year cannot exceed ₹2400 (Rs.200 per month).

Significance of oceans:

1. The ocean contains nearly 200,000 identified species, but actual numbers may be in the millions.

2. Globally, the market value of marine and coastal resources and industries is estimated at US$3 trillion

per year, about 5% of global GDP.

3. Over three billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods. Marine

wildlife has sustained human civilization and development for millennia, from providing food and

nourishment, to material for handicraft and construction. It has also enriched our lives culturally,

spiritually, and recreationally in different ways.

March, the day of signature of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild

Fauna and Flora (CITES), as UN World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild

animals and plants.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is

an international regulatory treaty between 183 party states.

President Ram Nath Kovind has given his approval for an Ordinance which allows voluntary

use of Aadhaar as ID proof for opening bank accounts and obtaining mobile SIM. Rajya Sabha

could not approve the Bill even though Lok Sabha has given its assent. In such a situation an

ordinance is necessary as per the law. The cabinet has approved it with effect to an Ordinance to

give changes proposed in Aadhaar and two other legislation. The amendment includes stiff

penalties for violation of norms which are set for the use of Aadhaar and violation of privacy. The

amendment also stated that anyone not offering Aadhaar cannot be denied any service. About the

Abhinandan Varthaman is to be awarded the first Bhagwan Mahavir Ahimsa Puraskar

Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman

has been chosen for the first Bhagwan Mahavir Ahimsa Puraskar

constituted by the Akhil Bharatiya Digambar Jain Mahasamiti. The

award carries a cash prize of Rs.2.51 lakh, a memento, and a

citation. It will be presented to Abhinandan Varthaman on April

17 the Mahavir Jayanti. Abhinandan Varthaman, a wing-

commander in the Indian Air Force shot into limelight in the

ongoing bilateral tensions between Indian and Pakistan aftermath

of the Pulwama terror attack. In the dogfight that followed, he

crossed into Pakistan territory wherein he was struck by missiles.

He was captured by the Pakistan Military and was later handed

over to India as a peace gesture.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has banned the Jamaat-e-lslami of Jammu and Kashmir for a period of 5 years

under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
