Just a Reminder!

There are many factors that affect the relationship between a reader and text, including content, age-appropriateness, reader interests, suitability of the text, and text difficulty. The Lexile

measure of a book—a measure of text difficulty—is a good starting point in the book-selection

process, with other factors then being considered. The Lexile measure should never be the only factor considered when selecting a book.

Parents, please help your child choose appropriate reading this summer.

High School Assignments

Students will read 2 books from the suggested reading list

for their grade level/course for the upcoming year.

All students will keep a Reading Log of time spent read-

ing 2 books and have the log signed by a parent.

When students return to school in the fall, they will be

required to complete a writing assessment related to their

summer reading.

Students may also elect to read a book that is not on the

list, if it is within their Lexile range or within their grade

level Lexile Band (see below).

***A Lexile range is included to help students select

books that correspond with the Lexile score found on their

8th grade CRCT report.

Students enrolled in an Advanced Placement Course will select

readings from the list based on the recommendations from their

individual schools.

The official Lexile website is an amazing resource for finding ap-

propriate summer reading material (for free!).

To use this resource go to www.lexile.com and follow these steps.

1. At the top or the web page, click on “Find a Book”

2. Type in your child’s Lexile score in

the appropriate box. The Lexile

Range will automatically be calcu-

lated. Click Submit.

3. Next, you will be able to check

various categories about which your

child may wish to read. When fin-

ished, click Submit.

4. Now you will be presented with a

list of books that are in your child’s

areas of interest and within his or her

Lexile range.

Clicking the “WorldCat” button next to each book will allow you to see if that

book is available in the Live Oak Public Libraries. If the library does carry

that book, you can request a hold online. You can also request the book be

sent to your local library branch.

SCCPSS High School Summer Reading List

What is a Lexile? Lexiles can range from approximately 100 to 2000.

Lexiles rate the complexity of a book.

A student’s Lexile is the level of text that he or she can read

with 75% comprehension.

Which book should my child read?

Choose books with a Lexile from 100 below to 50 above

their score. For example, if my student reads at 830L, he

should pick a book with a Lexile range of 730L-880L.

Where can I find this score? On prior CRCTs for students entering Grade 9.

See example below.

From the student’s ITBS scores
