Based on two of Colin Clark'sbiographical books detailing themaking of the 1957 film The Princeand the Showgirl, which starredMarilyn Monroe alongside LaurenceOlivier, My Week With Marilyn is thetrue story of one man's week-longencounter with the biggest movie staron the planet. In the summer of1956, set assistant Clark (Redmayne,Glorious 39) is given the honour ofescorting Monroe (Williams, BlueValentine) during her stay in London. As it turns out, chaperoning theworld's most famous woman isn'texactly plain sailing. Director SimonCurtis makes his feature debut withthis bubbly British comedy that alsostars Judi Dench, Toby Jones (TinkerTailor Soldier Spy) and KennethBranagh as Laurence Olivier.

Stephen Myers (Gosling, Drive)believes in Mike Morris (Clooney). Asthe most media-savvy staffer on thegovernor's campaign trail towardswinning the Democrats' primaryelection (and by extension the UnitedStates presidency), Myers is the toppupil. But the charismatic youngupstart is about to get a hard lesson indirty politics from two feuding oldhands (Giamatti and Hoffman), whowill do anything to get their candidate(and themselves) into the WhiteHouse. Myers is about to realise thathe is nothing more than a quick fish ina pool of ruthless sharks. To keep hisown career on track, he is going tohave to roll up his sleeves and dive in.George Clooney's fourth directorialfeature, The Ides of March is agripping, tightly scripted, downrightelectrifying political drama.

Hester Collyer (Weisz) is in an age-old trap.Despite living a privileged life in post-war London, she has becomedisillusioned with being merely atrophy to a celebrated high courtjudge (Beale). In a daring move shestarts up an affair with a dashing youngex-RAF pilot named Freddie Page(Hiddleston, Archipelago) who dulywhisks her off her feet and injectssome spark back into her stagnantexistence. The lovers' bond, it wouldseem, is infallible, yet it is also illicit, and the niggling feeling of separationby fate is never far away. After hiswonderful 2008 period documentaryOf Time And The City, Daviesreturns to feature filmmaking insimmering fashion with aShakespearean tale of passion, desirean abandonment. Adapted fromTerence Rattigan's seminal play, TheDeep Blue Sea is a poisonousvalentine to the cruel, all consumingnature of love.

Charlotte Brontë's timeless gothicnovel gets a suitably atmosphericadaptation from up-and-comingdirector Cary Fukunaga (SinNombre). The latest in a long line ofbig-screen treatments, Fukunaga'sJane Eyre remains faithful to theemotional friction of its 19th-centurysource while establishing itself as apatently contemporary period drama.Alice In Wonderland’s MiaWasikowska plays the eponymousheroine, who falls for the brutish butattractive housemaster Mr Rochester(Fassbender, X-Men: First Class) afterrelocating to the grandiose yetremote Thornfield Hall. Moody butelegant, Jane Eyre is a masterful pieceof classical storytelling from a youngdirector on the rise and an exquisitecast.

A hundred years ago the BritishAntarctic Expedition led by CaptainScott set out on its ill-fated race to theSouth Pole. Joining Scott on board theTerra Nova was official photographerand cinematographer HerbertPonting, and the images that hecaptured have fired imaginations eversince. Ponting filmed almost everyaspect of the expedition: the scientificwork, life in camp and the localwildlife. Most importantly, herecorded the preparations for theassault on the Pole - from the trials ofthe caterpillar-track sledges to clothingand cooking equipment - giving us areal sense of the challenges faced bythe expedition. In 1924 Ponting re-edited the film into this remarkablefeature, complete with vivid tintingand toning. The BFI National Archivehas restored the film using the latestphotochemical and digital techniques.

Let The Right One In directorAlfredson adapts the classic John leCarré 1974 espionage novel with alittle help from the crème de la crèmeof British acting talent. Gary Oldman(The Dark Knight) is George Smiley, aretired intelligence agent recalled tosniff out a Soviet mole who'smanaged to infiltrate MI6. Set in the1970s, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spypromises to be an intelligent old-school spy caper that prizesatmosphere over whizz-bang specialeffects, painting a portrait ofinternational espionage very much atodds with the glitz and glamour ofBond. A fantastic cast and aninternationally revered director markthis as an un-missable post-Bournecrime drama – already being tipped asan awards season contender.

Any of you who had the good fortuneto grow up in the 80s will surelyremember this classic, probably forDavid Bowie's impressive cod piece(perhaps ever so slightly inappropriateseeing as this was actually aimed atchildren!) But it is the fantastic visualsand puppetry that make this what it is.Freaky pink things with detachablelimbs, a fox that rides a sheepdog, abog of eternal stench and an M. C.Escher inspired finale. Let us put it thisway: David Bowie chasing a youngJennfier Connelly. Enough said.

In this inspirational drama based onthe 2009 New York Times bestsellerby Kathryn Stockett, Emma Stone isEugenia 'Skeeter' Phelan, a pluckyyoung writer who interviews her bestfriend's African-Americanhousekeeper about her experiencesworking for a well-heeled whitefamily and thereby shakes up theDeep South establishment. Thisbeing the 1960s, segregation is stillthe norm, but in breaking taboo andspeaking out against her employersAibileen (Davis, DOUBT) has finallygiven her long-suppressed people avoice. As Skeeter continues to helpspread the truth an unlikelysisterhood emerges that sends ripplesof change through the entirecommunity. This poignant, deeplymoving film is flavoured with a sassysense of humour, great centralperformances and a universal moralitythat is never sentimental. An uttergem.

For nearly two decades, the ChemicalBrothers' mind-bending audiovisuallive shows have played to packedhouses and festivals across the globe. But it has never been documented onfilm - until now! In 2011, at the iconicFuji Rock Festival in Japan, TheChemical Brothers played a headlineset in front of 50,000 fans, and theperformance was filmed on 21cameras. Immersing us in the thick ofa frenetic crowd, Don't Thinkcaptures the synaesthetic barrage ofsound, visuals and light, and thetransforming effect it has on itsaudience.

Margaret centres on a 17-year-oldNew York City high-school studentwho feels certain that sheinadvertently played a role in a trafficaccident that has claimed a woman'slife. In her attempts to set things rightshe meets with opposition at everystep. Torn apart with frustration, shebegins emotionally brutalising herfamily, her friends, her teachers, andmost of all, herself. She has beenconfronted quite unexpectedly with abasic truth: that her youthful ideals areon a collision course with the realitiesand compromises of the adult world.

Daniel Auteuil (Hidden) directs andstars in this moving remake of MarcelPagnol's (Manon Des Sources)revered 1940 film of the same name. The Well Diggers Daughter unfolds inrural WWII-era France where 18-year-old Patricia (Bergès-Frisbey), theeldest daughter of a well-diggernamed Pascal (Auteuil), falls in lovewith a dashing local boy, only to fallpregnant. With the father-to-be calledup for service as the war escalates, the scandal quickly engulfs the entirefamily. It's here the film switchesfocus, as Pascal, crestfallen and bitter, sets his priorities straight and fights forhis brood’s integrity against the scornof the townsfolk.

Morvern Callar director LynneRamsay hurdles herself into Oscarcontention with this rivetingadaptation of Lionel Shriver'sbestselling 2003 novel. Tilda Swinton(I am Love) turns in a typically stellarperformance as Eva, the mother of ateenage boy (Miller) who commits anunimaginably heinous crime. As shestruggles to deal with her grief thestory flashes back to before theincident, when snapshots of Eva'stroubled relationship with her sonprompt the audience to questionwhether evil is something that derivesfrom nature or nurture. We Need ToTalk About Kevin is a powerfuldomestic drama with a killer twist.

Nominated for 6 golden globes andsure to be an Oscar winner, The Artisttook the film world by storm earlier thisyear when it had its premiere atCannes. Now, following a dizzyingfestival run, Michel Hazanavicius'impossibly charming film is sure to wooUK audiences. The story takes us backto 1920s Hollywood, where movieicon George Valentin (Dujardin, LittleWhite Lies) faces a career crisis as theadvent of the talkies signals the end ofthe silent era. To make matters worse, the girl he helped make into a star(Bejo) is about to become the it girl ofher generation. Shot in black and whiteand virtually without dialogue, TheArtist may sound little more than a cutehomage, but it’s wonderfullyimaginative script and heartfelt leadperformances will see it rank high oncritics' 'best of' lists in 2012.

One of the best-loved fantasy films ofall time returns to the big screen as adigitally restored print. The famousfilm of 1939 begins in themonochrome world of Kansas butbursts into colour when Dorothy’s(Garland) house, uprooted in aterrible tornado, lands in the surrealfairyland of Oz where Dorothy andher dog Toto encounter three newfriends: the brainless Scarecrow(Bolger), the cowardly Lion (Lahr)and the heartless Tin Man (Haley),each in search of what he believes heis lacking. The film’s ostensiblemessage is that ‘There’s no place likehome’: Dorothy’s mythic journeyseems to reveal that to find one’sheart’s desire, one need not lookfurther than one’s own backyard.

Ralph Fiennes has tackled one ofShakespeare's most challenging plays- about a man who regards power ashis right, but is unwilling to makecompromises required. The setting isa modern state (possibly in theBalkans) under threat from aneighbouring country. Coriolanus is ageneral whose efforts mean thatRome is triumphant, but when itspeople reject his rule he changessides. In Fiennes' hands (both as actorand director), he becomes acharacter in conflict with himself. Atone level a model citizen, hisarrogance is such that he cannotaccept he has to play the game by anyrules but his own, and no one, neither wife nor mother nor friends, can influence him. His tragedy is thathe might have been great, had he buta scintilla of humility. This is amagnificent debut by one of the UK'sfinest actors, which will become thedefining cinematic text for this play.

It’s time to start getting excited aboutthe long-awaited return of covertagent Ethan Hunt. With his team underinvestigation from his owngovernment, Hunt and co. must gofurther under the radar than everbefore in order to clear theirorganisation’s name. Blistering action, breathtaking stunts and killer effectsare all par for the course in BradBird’s (The Invincibles) addition toThe Mission Impossible franchise.
