Hello everyone,
This week Cairns West State School is celebrating NAIDOC Week! Activities have been planned for the week, with Wednesday – Friday being the main days. Friday con-cludes with the NAIDOC Parade which commences at 1:30pm sharp. A special thank you to the Family Cultural Awareness Group who has met to help arrange activities for the week of celebration. A special thank you also to Mrs Kathy Coleiro, Mrs Nixon and Mr Ottone who have been the organisers from the school.
Students are invited to wear traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clothes to celebrate NAIDOC on Friday (and at any day this week) Parents and Carers are invited to enjoy a traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait tasting platter prepared by members of the Family Cultural Awareness Group. The tasting platters will be shared from 12:45pm on Friday outside the Life Skills Centre (Tuckshop) prior to the NAIDOC parade.
School Opinion Survey – Parent/Caregiver Survey 2019 included in this newsletter. This survey is an opportunity for you to have your say about your level of satisfaction with the school on many topics. To complete the form, you need to go to the website on the form and then login. One form will be in each newsletter this Wednesday. If you would like another form for your partner (one only – you are not able to collect for other members of your family or friends), please collect from the school office. Students in year 5 and 6 will also be completing a Student Opinion Survey during class time. All online surveys close on 26 August 2019.
Try for 5 – New Attendance Program – We all know that it is important to come to school every day. This year, Cairns West State School has partnered with the North Queensland Cowboys to encourage all students to attend every day! There are some awesome prizes and superstars like Matty Bowen and Ray Thompson will be regular visitors to the school to help encourage students. 100% attendance = 100% opportunity to learn!
3 Way Interviews a success! – Thank you to the parents and carers who attended the 3 Way Inter-views last Tuesday. It was wonderful to see so many parents, students and teachers meeting to discuss the educational improvement journey of the students. More than 200 interviews were held!
Until next time Mike

National Collection of Data on School Students with Disability
Dear Parents/Carers,
Collecting data on school students with Disability helps teachers, principals and
education authorities support the participation of students with Disability in
schooling on the same basis as students without Disability.
All Australian Governments have agreed to work together on the annual collection
of data on school students with disability. Our school will also be involved.
Please be reassured that the Department will NOT collect any data that can iden-
tify an individual student. The only data being collected at the school level to be
reported nationally is the:
number of students in the school who are provided with an adjustment to
address a disability;
level of adjustments we provide for those students; and
broad category of disability. Information and fact sheets are available from the:
Australian Government Department of Education website: http://www.nccd.edu.au/resources-and-tools/roles/parents-guardians-and-carers-14 Alternatively, if you have any queries about the collection or use of this data I
encourage you to contact me directly. Jenny Bremner - HoSE—SEP
