Division of Student Affairs and Administrative Support Units The Division of Student Affairs is one of the largest employers at Virginia Tech, with more than 3,300 employees, including faculty, staff, wage, students, and graduate assistants. The 2012-13 revenue budget for the Division of Student Affairs totals approximately $135 million, of which $1.9 million are education and general funds and $1.5 million are unique military activities funds. The remaining $131.5 million accounts for 49 percent of the university’s total auxiliary enterprise funds. The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for more than 60 buildings throughout Virginia Tech’s campus, consisting of nearly 1.6 million assignable square feet. This represents approximately 28 percent of the total assignable square feet on the campus and includes 10 dining facilities and 47 residence halls. The Division of Student Affairs is committed to supporting the university’s Administrative Quality and Improvement (AdQI) process. Each of the 15 departments within the division is actively engaged in assessment of student learning. Each associate and assistant vice president conducts ongoing assessments of administrative functions. All division departments undergo comprehensive program reviews every five years. VIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE AND STATE UNIVERSITY An equal opportunity, affirmative action institution DATA POINTS 2012-13 Patty Perillo, Ph.D. Vice President for Student Affairs 112 Burruss Hall (0250) Blacksburg, Virginia 24061 540-231-6272 Fax: 540-231-3189 www.dsa.vt.edu The Division of Student Affairs has recently taken steps to create a culture of collaboration and organizational efficiency. The Student Activities and University Union departments were merged into a single Student Centers and Activities department during 2011-12, taking advantage of the close proximity and similar missions of the two units. In that same year, Housing Services and Residence Life were aligned into a unified Housing and Residence Life department to better focus on the student residential learning experience. In addition, the division has consolidated its administrative support units, bringing together Human Resources, Information Technology, and Communications staff to share resources and provide cross-training and back-up for critical services. Recent Honors and Successes Campus Alcohol Abuse Prevention Center: Received the NASPA Award for Programming Excellence and observed a decline in at-risk drinkers by 8 percent and in high-risk drinkers by 10 percent. Career Services: Registered students for the professional advising service grew from 321 in 2010-11 to 759 in 2011-12, a 136 percent increase. (contiued) 1
