Demographic Profile of Hos and its associated Tribes

(Jharkhand, Orissa, West Bengal, Bihar, Madhay Pardesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharstra)

Ho tribe is found in Jharkhand, Orissa, West Bengal and Bihar. Although its

associated tribes; Kol, Kolha, Munda, Mundari etc., are found in the states of

Orissa, Madhya Pardesh, Chhattisgarh and Maharstra.

The Ho tribe constitutes 8,06,921 population in these seven states. Around 90% of

Ho tribe resides in the rural areas, working as cultivators and agricultural laboures.

They are predominantly cultivators in Jharkhand (49.42%) and Orissa (30.2%).Whereas, majority of them, are working as agricultural laboures in West Bengal

(67.58%), Bihar (53%) and Orissa (47.49%).

Around half of the children of age-group of 5- 14 years, are already out of the

educational system. And those, who are educated, they are educated up to middle

schools. Lowest level of literacy among Hos is found in Bihar (23.78%),

furthermore, only 20.22 % children of age group of 5-14 years, are attending

schools in Bihar.

Kol tribe of Mahrastra is seems to be comparatively higher literate. But, their

literacy is only up to school level. Their representation (in percentage terms) in

higher education is lowest among all these seven states. Similar case happens with

Mundas, except in Jharkhand.

Religions of Hos and its associated tribes

According to Census, 2001, Ho tribe has wide range of religions; Hindu,

Muslim, Christans, Sikhs, Budhist, Jains, Addivasi, Gond, Ho,Munda, Oraon, Sarna, Sanar etc. Other then these religions, Munda tribe has

Birsa, Burubunga, Manwato, Sarvdharm, and Sanar religions.

Except Hos and Mundas of Jharkhand, in all other six states, Ho, Munda, Kol,

Kolha, Munda, Mundari are dominantly (up to 95%) mentioned as Hindu.
