Introduction, access and how to use DASA

DASA provides an online self-assessment tool that helps teachers to:

– evaluate how they use data tools for teaching and learning

– create a personal log of evidence of data analysis skills capability

– identify aspects of their practice for further professional learning.




• You access DASA through the DET Portal http://portal.det.nsw.edu.au

• Click on the “My applications” tab

• Click on the link to DASA




• You can also access DASA while at a DET network computer by using the link below:

The home screen gives you information about DASA




• The data framework underpins all of DASA.

• The framework identifies different elements involved in using data effectively.

• The framework has 8 domains (or areas of practice) and four phases of knowledge and skills development.

access and log in to SMART at school level.

Understands the relevance of and uses the menu functions for classroom teachers and school executive.

Navigates menu features, prints and uses data from SMART to compile reports to report to the school community.

Effectively trains others in the navigation and use of the functions of SMART.

2 Analysing SMART data for the classroom

Accesses and views some basic data for own class in SMART.

Creates groups and accesses data at item analysis level for own class or small group. Analyses class data against curriculum outcomes.

Effectively analyses data for own class or group to inform teaching and learning. Understands functions of all screens in SMART.

Trains others in the effective application of SMART analysis for teachers.

3 Analysing SMART data for the school

Uses SMART to compare school data with that of the region and the state for the current year.

Uses custom school groups and Like School Groups to analyse and compare school performance. Analyses school trends and growth over time.

Effectively explains data for groups and sets targets for the whole school over time. Understands functions of all screens in SMART.

Trains others in the effective application of SMART analysis and interpretation and creates opportunities for others to engage in analysis.

4 Using the target setting tool and school performance graphs

Accesses target setting tool at school level.

Demonstrates knowledge of the purpose of the target setting tool and its potential impact on school improvement.

Applies the output of the target setting tool to inform school planning and targets. Interprets and explains school performance graphs.

Leads staff participation in the use and interpretation of the target setting tool. Identifies means to address issues identified in the analysis of school performance graphs.




5 Integrating school and external assessment

Recognises the different purposes of external and internal assessment.

Compares and uses external and internal assessment.

Evaluates and modifies the use of assessment strategies with others.

Leads staff in evaluation and modification of assessment strategies and school policy.

6 Using Data to drive pedagogy

Links data results to relevant teaching strategies for improvement in own classroom.

Contributes to data-driven change in practice at whole school level.

Modifies teaching and learning programs and measures the impact of changes to practice over time.

Leads staff in implementation and evaluation of data-driven whole school teaching and learning programs.

7 Ethical practice Acknowledges social, legal and ethical issues of data use.

Applies an understanding of the legal and ethical issues of data use.

Engages staff in exploration of the legal and ethical issues of data use.

Monitors, evaluates and leads the integration of ethical practice into all aspects of data use in the learning community.

8 Professional contribution

Demonstrates a commitment to professional learning by exploring data use to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom.

Contributes to the work of the school in data analysis and interpretation.

Provides informed advice to the school regarding data analysis including the identification of strengths and areas for development.

Actively participates in the evaluation of the school’s approach to data use and analysis.




Every DASA screen has a help file




• To select your school, first click on the Selectbutton, type the first few letters in your school name, and then click Search.

• If you are teaching in a Primary School, you will have the option to select the Preschool or ES1-S3 radio buttons, if you are teaching in a High School, you will be asked to select your KLA.

• Then click on Save.• If you are in a regional or state office please type

‘consultants’ into the search box then choose your region or ‘state office’.




• Down the right-hand side you will see the 8 domains.

• You can work through these domains in any order.

• You don’t have to complete any, or all, the domains at once. Your data will be saved for the next time you want to come back to it.

• Responding to all of the statements in DASA may take 20 minutes to an hour.




• Each domain has 4 statements and you are asked whether and how often you do these things in your teaching practice.

• If you click on Regularly, you are given the opportunity to enter evidence of your skills in this area. New Scheme teachers have found this particularly helpful when gathering evidence for accreditation with the NSW Institute of Teachers .If you click on Sometimes or Never, the item gets added to your Learning Plan.

• If you are unsure about what the statement means, you can click on ‘Show me’ for a very brief text explanation.




• When you have completed DASA (or as much as you want to at a particular time), you can view a number of different reports.

• For example, the Graph report shows you which phase you have been placed at for each of the framework domains

• The personalised summary is a summary of your evidence in DASA.




Please read this help file for the Learning Plan before using this page




• The learning plan is the record of those practices that you have identified that you sometimes or never participate in.

• If you click on the ‘Phase pathways’ button at the top (see next screen), you are taken to a range of professional learning resources to help you build knowledge and skills in this area.

• You can undertake the learning activities that seem most interesting and relevant to you and enter them into your learning plan.




DASA :– allows for the aggregation of school, region

and state data – can help to target the data professional

learning for the school– does not identify individual teachers.
