John Farmer

Well, what a year !!!Beginning with those horrific fires raging and then there was that rumour of a virus heading our way. We were lucky to get our great weekend away to Mittagong and our visit to Retford Park in. We had lots of outings arranged …. a garden trip to the Hills district, a Linwood House visit and the Eastern Creek display day and the weekend to Berry. All of these had to be cancelled.Of course to help contain the spread of the virus we were all locked down…and not to mention that our cars were stuck in the garage and itching to get out. Thankfully, June 1 rolled around, and we have been let out. We took the Auburn out for its first run on Monday June 1 south to Sublime Point and there were a number of historic vehicles on the road loosening up the ball joints and oiling the bearings. Our meeting schedule has been interrupted, with the one scheduled for February was washed out because of a huge storm. The one for April was cancelled for obvious

reasons. Bruce Noake then arranged a virtual meeting for June 5. Seven members were able to navigate the electronic world and joined together for the meeting. We were able to talk about some future outings and they have been placed on the calendar, hoping that nothing will interrupt them. A run to Bundeena on August 23rd meeting at Loftus oval at 10.30. We will incorporate our August meeting with this run, and then In September going to the Hills District for spring flowers. The AGM at Sandy Point on October 18. And our end of year Christmas function late November . (Claudia will try and book Saturday 13th November when the club opens bookings) We will let you know of any changes if they arise. We also decided that since our schedule run of newsletters and events have been disrupted we will reduce the annual fees to $40 . Please watch for the renewal forms in the current printed magazine and/or by email. We ask you to please fill out your details as there have been instances where they have changed and the magazines have not been able to be delivered.I would like to encourage all club members to read our magazine thoroughly and see if there is an event near you. We would love to see you, even if your car is not yet on the road. Please contact the co-ordinators of the event to let them know if you will be attending.

Just a reminder that our club meetings are open to all club members. Meetings are usually held at the beginning of February, April, June, August, October AGM and December. Some of these are held on Sundays and some Friday evenings. Please check the magazine to see where and when the meetings will be held. Again please contact the host or me as to whether you can attend.I look forward to seeing many of you out and about in your Historic or modern car this year.Happy Motoring,

Page 4: Darrin Freund’s Model 65 Willys KnightDarrin Freund’s ...

Important Notice;Folks, we don’t know from day to day what will be locked down or what will be opened up, we just live in hope. It is therefore imperative that we know if you intend to attend our outings, we ask you to be sure and RSVP to event co-ordinators,

Jim Lovett 0407 478 866 orJohn Farmer 0478 478 789

this will allow them to contact you if thereare any last minute changes.

Please watch for Emails or SMS’s

Take care be safe ! ! !

Hybrid?

New Term for

an Old Idea There is a much fanfare about the great features of hybrid cars both on the road and race track; it is of interest that the idea is not a new innovation as seen by below. Woods Motor Vehicle Co. marketed such a vehicle in America in 1917.

Item forwarded by John Blythe

Woods Motor Vehicle Co. Chicago. Ill. (1899-1919) The Woods Electric was one of the longest-lived American electric makes, although its sales never reached those of electric cars of Detroit, Baker or Milburn. The usual range of town cars was made, including a hansom cab, powered by a single 3hp motor mounted on the rear axle. In 1903 a four seater tonneau was made complete with bonnet which made it look like a petrol engine car. Woods Electrics were expensive, with prices up to $4,500. The most

interesting Woods was the Dual Power of 1917 onwards. This had a 12hp 4 cylinder Continental petrol engine as an auxiliary to the electric motor. Maximum speed was 20mph with the electric motor alone, or 35mph with both engines. From ‘The Complete Encyclopaedia of Motor Cars 1885-1988’ by the late G.N.Georgano

This would be probably the first Kalorama the Riley Motor Club entered as a club, as it is mentioned in the club’s newsletter. The sporting car is easy as it is the 1935 Riley Imp of Ron Brownrigg. Ron is 85 and is no longer a member, but he still owns the Imp. I think the car behind him is a 1935 Riley Kestrel owned at the time by Don and June Jackson. If it is that car, it is still in excellent condition and lives not that far from Kalorama.

The Rileys in the background are Riley Falcons. The one on the left is a 1937 Briggs steel bodied Falcon, (Rileys had a contract with Briggs to supply bodies for this model) while the one on the right is an aluminium 1936 model Falcon. The body of this car was built by a Riley subsidiary, Midland Motor Body Co. run by Stanley Riley.
