How I came into this role is a real story of being in the right place at the right time. Prior to this, I worked in the city as a legal

coordinator but desperately wanted to work for a charity. I decided to volunteer in my spare time until the right job came up.

I’d had a modest upbringing in Surrey with a variety of pets and knew I loved animals from a very young age, often cat napping with my cats or sitting in the rabbit hutch while my rabbit sat on my shoulder nuzzling my ear.

In 2008 I started volunteering as re-homing coordinator for the Wimbledon & District RSPCA. After six months, the perfect opportunity arose as the Branch’s charity shop manager so I finally left my full time city job. My time was split between managing the shop and re-homing, both can often be full time roles in themselves.

One of my proudest moments was being promoted to Branch Manager in May 2012. These days my jobencompasses so many interesting things, no day is ever the same; one day I’ll be getting through my mound of paperwork, the next I’ll be getting up early to take cats to the vet or setting the trap for a stray.

With the dedication of our fantastic volunteers, we’re also able to host and attend more events and offer animal welfare advice and assistance to the public. This summer you’ll see us at various places including the Wimbledon Village Fair, the Stables Open Day and Pets at Home.

Working alongside Putney Animal Hospital, we see the everyday heartbreak of animals that have been injured, neglected and left to breed unnecessarily.

Pet neutering is something we're trying hard to tackle as often people leave their pets unneutered or let them have a ‘first’ litter. Unnecessary litters are a massive problem. One unneutered cat can cause hundreds of offspring; all this can be avoided by a safe, simple operation. Considering there is so much help out there it's frustrating that people still aren't listening.

Our neutering scheme offers help for those on low incomes or benefits and we also contribute to the C4 free neutering scheme cats.org.uk/c4

Last Autumn I captured three generations of cats by Wimbledon Tennis grounds who were left to multiply. Sadly, this is not an uncommon story.

The national RSPCA call centre (NCC) deals with a call every 10 seconds. Our inspectors went out to 13,925 complaints in 2012 in our region alone, that's about 38 per day!

What many people are unaware of is that there are about 170 RSPCA branches in England and Wales who operate on a local level, none receive any government or lottery funding and we all rely on public donations. At present, our Branch mainly deals with cats. Each new arrival can initially cost us at least £100 to health check, board and re-home via our private cattery pens and foster home network; we’ve still got a very steep mountain to climb to reduce the amount of unwanted animals in this area. We really are your local RSPCA.

There are many ways people can help us from becoming a foster carer, adopting a rescue animal, volunteering in our shops and events or even donating while online shopping via EasyFundraising easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/rspcawimbledon

I'm so excited about what we can achieve in the future. The ultimate aim is to open an animal rescue centre near Wimbledon and we’re now actively fundraising and requesting legacies of property for this.

As with every job there are ups and downs; being exposed to the animal cruelty that happens every day has to be the hardest thing I have to deal with. The best part is working with some truly amazing people, knowing that the hard work we do will help animals who desperately need us. I now have two gorgeous rescue cats of my own who, despite being very nervous initially, are now happy and confident and make my home complete.

Women’s tennis is changing, and it may not be too long before Britain has a champion in SW19.

As the tennis circus comes back to SW19, most experts expect Serena Williams to be holding the Ladies’ Singles trophy aloft come the first Saturday in July. If Serena successfully fights off the challenges of leading rivals Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka and last year’s finalist Agnieszka Radwanska, she will claim her sixth Wimbledon crown and her sixteenth Grand Slam singles title, only two behind tennis legends Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. Look beyond this small group of established stars, however, and you find a promising group of young players including two of Britain’s finest prospects for over thirty years.

Not since Virginia Wade won the Centenary Championships in 1977, and was then a semi-finalist a year later, has Britain mounted a serious challenge for the Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles title. Sue Barker - now the BBC’s lead tennis presenter - also reached the semi-finals in the year of Wade’s victory, but at last we now have two young players capable of reaching the highest level.

Twenty-one year old Heather Watson hails from the Channel Island of Guernsey and in 2012 became the first British player to win a title on the WTA Tour for more than twenty years. She has a strong all-round game and a never-say-die attitude, the latter helping her to clinch that WTA title in Osaka, Japan after a gruelling three-hour final against Kai-Chen Chang of Chinese Taipei. Heather has a bubbly personality and an infectious smile, proving that nice girls can be winners too.

Earlier this year, Heather reached a career high ranking 39 before being sidelined by glandular fever. Her career progress to date has been fuelled by her friendly rivalry with fellow Brit Laura Robson, a Wimbledon resident who has also climbed into the world’s top forty this year.

The contrast between the two British girls could not be more pronounced, both in terms of personality and style of play. Heather’s high-energy all round game is in sharp contrast to nineteen year old Laura’s hard-nosed power play which has enabled her to beat Grand Slam title winners Kim Clijsters, Li Na and Venus Williams in the last twelve months. Laura was the Wimbledon junior girls champion in 2008 at just fourteen years of age, beating girls four years her senior. She also has the added confidence that comes with being an Olympic medal winner having won the Silver at London 2012 in partnership with Andy Murray.

Bright futures are predicted for both Heather and Laura, although some respected experts feel that Laura Robson is the name most likely to be inscribed on the famous Venus Rosewater Dish sooner rather than later. Whether or not this bold prediction proves to be correct, it is great for the Centre Court crowd and the British viewing public to have genuine world class women players to cheer on after such a long barren spell.

Divorce is amicable or not; complications, surprise expenses and lots of financial jargon don’t help an already stressful situation. Here

are Lisa Conway-Hughes’ tips to help you make financially savvy choices:

1. Get informed and in control. In order to have an idea of where you stand financially after divorce you need to figure out your financial status as a married couple. Gather all of the documents relating to your assets and liabilities e.g. savings, investments, pensions and debts (mortgages and loans). Next, create a pre divorce budget plan and a post divorce budget plan – don’t forget to include all the possible income streams i.e. child benefit, if relevant.

2. Hire good professionals that you understand and trust. Regardless of your financial situation, you should speak to several legal and financial professionals to get the best guidance through the divorce process. Usually you will be offered a free consultation which will enable you to get a feel for who you like the most.

3. Don’t just automatically go for the family home. Most people underestimate the values of pensions, especially ones that come with guarantees e.g. final salary schemes. Although the family home may seem like the biggest asset, you need to consider if you will be able to afford the upkeep and also if you will have enough time/disposable income to make up your retirement shortfall.

4. Debts. If your partner has run up debts in their name, then the money to settle these debts can only be taken from their share of the assets. However, if the debt is in joint names then you are both liable. It would be wise to check your credit rating to see how you are affected.

5. Common Law Wife. To be brief – THERE IS NO SUCH THING! It is an urban myth that if you are cohabiting but not married that you have the same rights as a spouse, even if you have children together.

The Cake Bar isn’t only my business but it is also my hobby. My love for baking

started at an early age. I found I had a passion for desserts and creating special moments for people around food. My inspiration came from my parents who have a keen eye for presentation.

The Cake Bar regularly participates in neighbourhood and community events in and around London. My most recent partnership has been with Le Creuset in Wimbledon Village. I regularly hold demonstrations of various baked goods. It gives me a chance to meet my neighbours and showcase the simplicity of baking.

Although there are many custom cake companies, I like to think that The Cake Bar is particularly

unique in its offering of allergy free, dairy free, egg free, gluten-free and sugar-free cakes. The beauty of the cake is not only what it looks like on the outside but how it tastes. For me, nothing beats seeing a great, big, smile of delight on a client's face when they first see what I have created for them. I import only the best flowers from Holland, and buy English produced flowers and plants from the market and would love all of Wimbledon and the surrounding areas to see what

we have to offer! I also specialise in weddings and events and want to offer a bespoke service to brides and clients, and give them exactly what they want for their special day. I have made lots of amazing contacts whilst working in central London, from wedding stationary, to cakes, photographers, wedding planners etc, and would love to pass these contacts on to my customers. My favourite is working with brides and creating something they have only dreamed of and that is priceless to me!

This week, I met with Michael Lang, Wimbledon Land Rover Service Centre Manager, to find out more about the services they offer and the

team behind the success.

“The biggest part of our business is servicing, although we also do MOTs. As an authorised Land Rover service centre, the majority of our customers are Land Rover owners, but we’ll attend to any make of car – they’re all the same under the bonnet!”

“We also offer a reduced rate for non-Land Rover products along with a 20% labour discount for David Lloyd members.”

Meeting Michael and the team, it’s obvious they have a great rapport and want to give their customers the best possible experience.

“Our philosophy is simple: we like to treat whoever walks through the door the way we’d like to be treated. Unfortunately, a lot of garages don’t do that, which can make you feel uncomfortable. With us, there are no airs and graces.” said Michael.

As a self-confessed car novice, who dreads the annual service and MOT merry-go-round, it’s refreshing to know that the team here speaks my language. Not only do they genuinely strive to create a welcoming environment, they also offer competitive price-matching and free collection and delivery anywhere in London.

Speaking with Michael, it’s clear that the magic formula lies in their culture and size.

“It’s all about the customer experience, the personal touch. Probably 8 out of 10 customers that ring up – you will know their voice or be able to quickly identify them. You normally get to speak to the same person or someone who knows what’s happening with your car, which is very important. Unfortunately, with larger garages, things are generally colder because you have to go through more layers, which results in the loss of friendliness and banter.”

As a testament to the quality of their end-to-end service, the team have been awarded Top 3 national ranking in the Land Rover Service Centre of the Year awards for the last 2 years.

THE INSPIRATIONI've been a Wimbledon resident for ten years now and a cake and sandwich supplier to the lovely shops and offices in the village. I started writing at the age of eleven. Then, at seventeen, I saw a snippet of a movie in which a handsome young man was strolling along a beach looking at the surfers out at sea. I imagined he fell in love with one of them, wrote a short story, and then actually lost the manuscript! Twenty years later I found it again, and I was immediately inspired by the ideas I needed to turn it into a novel. At last ‘Nathan and Alex’ sprang into my head, almost in its entirety.

THE BOOKIt’s the story of two young men falling in love, charting their emotional and physical journey together. They live near to each other on a hill not unlike the hill in Marryat Road, and with very similar views over the suburbs. It was a joy to write, and I hope it encourages young gay men to feel safe with their feelings and very hopeful for the future.

A rustic bag of fresh breads was served and we struggled to decide on which daily plancha to choose from but, eventually settled on the Wye Valley green and purple asparagus with polenta and pecorino cream – mouth-watering.

We washed the succulent 'Rock' oysters down with their specially blended Portuguese wine called Ferdinand .

The finale? A delicious prosecco jelly presented in a cocktail glass with mascarpone and almond biscotti. I'll be back for more.

Geoff, Founder and Chairman, says £800,000 has been raised so far and they’re hoping to surpass the £1 million target this year. “It’s more than a day of fun, freebies and camaraderie, it’s a chance to personally help vulnerable South African children towards a positive future, many who are affected by HIV/AIDS.”

Speed can’t be trainedIt is a popular belief that you are born with a certain amount of ‘speed’ and you can’t improve it. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most young athletes are so physically weak and mechanically out of tune that significant improvements in speed can be made often just by working on technique and form.

Long endurance running improves children’s speed on the pitch Children tend to run out of mileage when doing long slow intervals of continuous running. Although this will improve their overall fitness, it won’t necessarily improve their speed on a sports pitch. Sport involves a higher aerobic element in which children tend to move from jogging to sprinting at full speed for 20-30 metres throughout the match. On this basis, if children want to improve their acceleration and top speed so they can get to the ball faster or get back on defence, then they have to train by running at full speed in practice.

Strength training will stunt a young athlete’s growthOn a daily basis, children are playing organised sport, tackling each other, sliding and falling down. These loads on the body can have a much greater physical impact than a well-designed strength training programme. Although we do not recommend or train children using weights, they can still benefit from body weight exercises such as press-ups, lunges and squats which increase muscular efficiency, speed up recovery and improve co-ordination and overall speed.

Little tips for avoiding BIG surprises

What do home buyers need to do to make sure the legals are done correctly, affordably and with no hidden surprises later?

1. Don’t be cajoled by seller’s agents to use their “preferred conveyancers”.

The agents cannot refuse to put your offer to their seller and no reputable agent would make it a precondition of putting forward a valid offer to purchase.

2. When choosing a conveyancer, use a firm that has been recommended by a friend or acquaintance.

Remember this is one of the biggest investments you are likely to make in your life and choosing

a “tried and tested conveyancer” who is able to communicate with you quickly, clearly and concisely will go a long way to reducing the stress that purchase and sales transactions invariably generate.

3. Beware cheap headline fees quoted on the internet. They often have hidden extras which

significantly inflate the final figure. A reputable firm will always be up front and give you a quote as to the level of fees from the outset.

4. Look to see if the firm is accredited under the Law Society conveyancing quality scheme.

These firms have had to go through an accreditation procedure with the Law Society and are required to comply with the Law Society’s

5. If you are buying with the aid of a mortgage, check to see if your chosen conveyancer is on the lenders' panel.

If they are not, you may find that you will incur additional charges when the lender appoints their own lawyers to act in relation to their mortgage.

6. Discuss with your conveyancer what searches you need to do in relation to the property.

In addition to the usual local and drainage searches, it may be necessary to do environmental searches, flood risk searches and in certain parts of the country, specialist searches such as coal, tin, lead and brine extraction.

Things you need to know when selling your house1. If you are selling, don’t be afraid to negotiate

fees with the estate agents. Estate agents' fees are not set in stone and chipping

off a quarter or a half a percent can save you quite a bit of money. Shop around and get at least three quotes. If you can use an agent that is recommended to you, so much the better. A good agent can make the sale go through more smoothly.

2. Consider appointing your solicitor prior to actually finding a buyer.

This will enable the solicitor to arrange for you to complete the conveyancing protocol documentation before a buyer is found and ensure that a complete package is sent off to your buyer’s solicitor once the sale has been agreed.

3. If you have had improvements carried out to your property, provide copies of any planning permissions, building regulation approvals and guarantees to your solicitor from the outset.

If you have lost or mislaid any of the documentation, get copies from the local authority or the relevant trade governing body or supplier. Any competent purchasers’ conveyancer will want to see these documents before contracts are exchanged.

4. However tempted, always be truthful when answering the questionnaire or enquiries put to you by the purchasers' conveyancer.

Being tempted to tell an untruth may subsequently result in your purchaser taking action against you if they discover that this is the case.

5. If you have a mortgage, make sure that the sale proceeds will be sufficient to pay off the mortgage debt or that you have recourse to funds that will enable the mortgage to be paid in full.

Bear in mind that in repaying the mortgage, if you purchased in the last few years, there may be an early repayment charge which will increase the amount required to redeem the charge on your home.

I often get asked by people whether extending or refurbishing their home makes better financial sense than moving and purchasing a bigger

property. I think it depends on whether you are happy with your current location. TheWimbledon Village Fair is the biggest annual fundraiser for local charity The Wimbledon Guild and money raised via sponsorships and donations will contribute

to developing new services for the local community. The aim of the charity is to help local people throughout the borough of Merton to lead a better life by tackling poverty, supporting ageing and encouraging mental wellbeing.

Highlights of this year’s event include The Fun Dog Show – a wacky contest that celebrates man’s best friend; The Adventure Village with exciting activities including Beat the Goalie and obstacle course or for the more traditional, a coconut shy and children’s pony rides. The British & International Food Villages will offer mouth-watering foods including Exotic Tagine, Mexican and Moroccan food or beautifully decorated cupcakes. Enjoy toe-tapping entertainment in the Jazz Tent and a variety of acts on the main stage showcasing local talent including school choirs, dance and exercise groups.

Fundraising has never been easier. Take a ride on the Zorb Balls, indulge in a box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts or sit for a beautiful portrait of your family with Louise Field Photography – all of these stalls and more will be donating a percentage of their profits from the day to The Wimbledon Guild. A finesse offers a 50% chance of success: better than none, but not very good. Sometimes, however, a finesse is all you have. Play carefully to exploit it to the full.

West led 10♠. South counted a spade, three possible club losers and the diamond finesse to take. The finesse would have to work for him to have any chance of success, and it may have to be taken three times. To preserve trump entries to hand, he correctly delayed drawing trumps.

He won the lead in dummy with A♠, played a heart to A♥ in hand and then led 2♦. When West played low, declarer played 10♦ from dummy, which won. He came to hand with a second trump, and led 4♦. Again, when West played low; declarer played low from dummy also. For a third time, he reached hand with a high trump – drawing them all – and led 6♦ for a third diamond finesse. Finally, he cashed A♦, felling West’s K♦, and discarded his J♠ from hand. He was left with three club losers - which he duly lost - but his contract was made.

“Guys, how totally rad am I?” I said to the kids. “Momma’s going to GLASTO this year! Crazeeee, right?”

The children looked up from the various left-wing articles they were immersed in, and smiled fondly.“Mum, that’s not ‘rad’ these days. Glastonbury is like the Chelsea Flower Show. It’s ideal for your age group.” It’s a lovely stage of parenthood, isn’t it, when you cease to be an annoying embarrassment to your children, and just become an object of their kindly pity.

My friend Jules, who’s also coming, was less sanguine: “Do you think people will be doing drugs there?” We stared at each other histrionically, like scandalised Enid Blyton schoolgirls. “A cocktail of Mumford and Sons and some Mateus Rosé

will probably be as wild as it gets,” reassured her husband, with just a flicker of alarm in his eyes. He’s in the City. He probably sees far worse at Glyndebourne.

Anyway, before you get carried away with the thought of us in crocheted hotpants, queuing for a place on the plank above a cesspit, I better admit that, yes, we’re doing it the Yurt way, for wimps who need a decent night’s kip, proper sanitation and a clotted cream tea at 4 o‘clock. After last year’s experience in a tent full of deadly mouse droppings in Yosemite, we know our limits. It’s a bit weird that two couples will be sleeping in four little cots in one space. All sorts of potentially delicate questions of yurt-etiquette present themselves here, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

My daughter has thoughtfully bought me some luminous Wellington boots, either so that I can find them in the dark, or so that I can be found in the dark by search parties, I’m not sure, and a “she-wee”. I’m not going into details on that; suffice to say it involves a funnel and some tubing. I haven’t fully read the instructions yet.

Nor have I read the line-up yet, either. Somebody said something about The Rolling Stones. Bit pathetic at their age, trying to be hip and rock n roll, I can honestly say, without a trace of irony. But don’t expect me to write any of this up afterwards. What goes on tour, stays on tour! Crazeeee, right?
