Darebin Community Grants Program

Program aims to support proposals that:• Fit with Council’s priorities.• Address a demonstrated need in the community.• Involve partnerships between groups/communities.• Actively work towards social inclusion and equity.• Involve groups with limited funding opportunities.• Involve groups previously not funded.• Foster creative approaches to address community needs and local issues.

What can be funded?

•Fees for temporary staff to implement a project/activity i.e. project worker, tutor, trainer, artist, instructor, speaker or labourer

•Printing, Advertising, publicity and promotional costs, Translations and Interpreting

•Venue or meeting room hire

•Materials and other items essential to the project/activity, Equipment hire costs, Transport costs for project or activity participants

•Public liability insurance Costs

•Entry fees for participants for activities, volunteer support expenses

•Costs to support participation of people with a disability in project or activity

What cannot be funded?•Programs or projects that are the funding responsibility of other levels of Government

•Capital equipment purchases

•Outstanding loans or debtors

•New building projects, capital works and facility, maintenance projects

•Applications by individuals, political organisations and private profit-making organisations

•Organisations that have not fulfilled their funding accountabilities related to City of Darebin Community Grants

What type of grants are available?

• Annual Cash-Grants ($6,000 maximum)

• Annual Venue Hire Subsidy Grants ($6,000 maximum)

• Combined Cash-Grants & Venue Hire Subsidy Grants ($6,000 maximum)

• Quick Response Cash-Grants and Venue Hire Subsidy Grants

Quick Response Grants

• Maximum of $500 cash grant or venue hire• For groups who were unable to apply under the

regular grants cycle.• Applications can be submitted any time of the

year.

Application process

•To be eligible for funding applicants must be a not for profit community group or organisation

•Only on-line applications are accepted

•Assistance will be provided to groups and organisations that don’t have access to computers or internet.

•Neighbourhood Houses can auspice groups

Funding priorities

The funding program has three major funding priority areas, which are linked to the Council Plan 2013-2017.

Applicants are required in their application to address at least one of the following priority areas:

Priority 1. Healthy and Connected Communities

Priority 2. Sustainable and Resilient Neighbourhoods

Priority 3 .Thriving and Creative Cultures

Priority One: Healthy and Connected Community

Proposals that :

•Develop programs and activities that support access, inclusion and human rights for all and address racial discrimination.

•Provide opportunities to isolated residents to connect socially and physically through active transport, safe and accessible public places.

•Promote and support community education and lifelong learning.

•Provide support to programs that encourage elderly residents’ participation to physical, social and cultural activities.

•Promote and help improve the community’s mental and physical health.

•Promote gender equity, prevent violence against women and support the right of women to fully participate in all aspects of community life.

•Support activities and programs that encourage participation to competitive and non-competitive sports for all ages and abilities.

Priority Two: Sustainable and Resilient Neighbourhoods

Proposals that

•Promote and address issues and problems created by climate changes and contribute to environmental sustainability.

•Promote sustainable transport and initiatives that achieve good environmental outcomes.

•Encourage responsible use of resources and promote composting and recycling.

•Educate people on healthy and safe food.

•Promote and educate participants to reduce water and energy use or adopt alternative sources of energy

•Promote and encourage the establishment of community gardens

•Educate young generations to respect and look after the natural environment

Priority Three: Thriving and Creative Culture

Proposals that

•Celebrate communities’ special days and anniversaries.

•Promote community participation in cultural, creative and artistic activities.

•Foster inspiration, celebration, innovation and diversity in Darebin’s arts and culture.

•Support local arts and culture festivals.

•Enhance social, cultural connection and inclusion, pride of place and a sense of belonging.

Venue hire subsidy grants

The following nine Council-owned venues are available under the grants program:

•Preston Shire and City Halls: 8470 8649

•Northcote Town Hall: 8470 8901

•Intercultural Centre: 8470 9422

•Northcote and Preston Libraries: 8470 8236

•Donald Street and Clyde Street Community Halls: 8470 8397

•Fairfield Community Room:8470 8397

Before applying, intending applicants are required book the venue (contact numbers are provided above)

Successful applicants will be granted in-kind support for the hiring costs of venues.
