challenge

Challenge 1: fuck the fail

Our most popularchallenge revealedthat we all feel theneed for some moretime to experiment, succeed or fail, butmost importantlylearn, share the storyand move on insteadof being stuck in thestatus quo of the“comfy seat”.

Give new ideasbreathing room andspace to grow, letpassion becontagious insteadof driving it out, weall felt this culturewas key to unlockthe human potential.

the hacks

Try something weird every week and share theexperience!

“Better report your fail, then fail to report”“Failing = learning”“On the wall is off the hook”

Introduce failure from the start

Job interview question: What has been yourbiggest failure and what did you learn from it?

Introduce failure from the topPersonal failure testimony of CxO every week

Trigger failureJob rotation puts people out of their comfort zone, gives a fresh perspective and will introducefailures to learn from.

Share failure & learningsThrough technology: Introduce a “failbook” wherepeople indicate “learn” instead of “like” if theylearned something from the storyFace-to-face: Include in team meetings, makenoise and celebrate when you fuck up, ...

Reward “failed but learned” storiesYou get the time to make it right and share theresultsSpecial parking space for fuck up of the month

Use slogans like:

Challenge 2: delete boss role

Although a command &control boss was votedout, to unlock thehuman potential, thereis a huge need for aleading role.

One that sets the goal& vision, grows thecompany, guards theculture, connects to theoutside world andremoves impediments.

What we don’t needwas equally clear: no more “boss”perks like privateparking lot, corneroffice, ...

the hacks

Rotate the boss role

Create a gap to find leadership

Stop taking the lead, leave a gap, ask a questionand leave the silence. Eventually someone willstep up and take over the lead.

Put as much responsibility within the teamUse delegation poker to have clear expectationsTeam decides on (part of) the compensation ofthe peers

Boss, get your hands dirty

Know what the work is that needs to be done tobetter connect with the needs and the people.

Elect your boss & give him regular 360° feedback

Challenge 3: never forget why

Ever felt happy in asituation that wasn’tmaking any sense toyou? Probably not! That’s why “Why?” is themost important question. When in the heat ofbusiness as usual, thisoften gets shoved to theback. Until that business isn’tworking anymore andhuge change projects areneeded to fix it. Avoid this and constantly

look for opportunities togrow, by always asking“why?”. Knowing the whygives purpose anddirection, enablesdelegation & freedom. To avoid the pitfall ofalways wanting an answerto the why question andbeing paralysed, be sureto counterbalance it withthe “why not!”

the hacks

Ask “why are you here?”

Why do we meet?

Start every meeting with the why-questionregarding the meeting. If the answer is “becausewe do so every week”, cancel the meeting.Put up posters in the meeting rooms to remindpeople of this ground rule.

Appoint a “guardian of the why”

This person pays extra attention the why is notoverrun by business as usual.

Add the “Why” to all your communications

Make peoples value to the organization clearand let them define it themselves.

Project kick offs (customer’s why & our why)Customer negotiationsIntranet shut down for maintenance reasons

thanks!
