LectureSeriesAdvertisementPROBLEM: How to {creatively} let architects know about the lecture series?

PROPOSAL: Advertise on coffee sleeves of course! Architects need their coffee :)

gray_matter(s) is the online student publication for the School of Architecture at Georgia Tech. As a staff writer and part of the school’s Lecture Committee, I have had many opportunities to interview

people from all over the world. My writing and interview technique focus on getting to know the person and relating what they do to my fellow students.

InfrastructureSTUDYWashington Park / GA / USA / 2012 PROFESSOR: Libero AndreottiMASTER’S THESIS PROJECT

PROBLEMAtlanta’s BeltLine currently has NO PLAN for train stops. In other models, light rail stations are either or absolutely NO THOuGHT of community interaction has been thought through. A genuine lack of understanding of the City of Atlanta’s infrastructure is prevalent and should be improved so that citizens can better participate in debates about design proposals.

PROPOSALBy creating a light rail station 1/2 mile adjacent to an already existing MARTA heavy rail line, and an urban walk connecting the two that

reveals the subterranean infrastructure, citizens can start to understand their whole designed environment and be able to respond with better understanding to future design proposals.

a game i developed that inspires, challenges, and delights all who dare to give it a try

design games!

GWtP is a game I developed in order to more actively engage other designers. I began by asking stu-dents and professors, but quickly gained confidence to ask our guest lecturers and any other design-ers I had the chance to meet. The two most interesting things about this game is capturing personal style through a sketch, and also hearing the ‘sales pitch’ after the three minutes is over.

PROBLEMThose who come to genetics research centers in hopes of curing a disease often donate months of time with very little chance of suc-cess. Instead, they give scientists amazing amounts of data. However, these places are rarely designed with the clinical trial user in mind. How can this building respond to the needs of all users, rather than just a select group?

PROPOSALBy studying migration patterns of societies over time (population genetics), I came to understand that some groups stay in one place

while others choose to move on to something new. This influenced a building design driven by circulation. By creating one main educa-tion path, but then several other choices based on user type, the building becomes individualized.

= 100 peoplei have about half an hour before my latest tests are done in the abosto, so i am thinking about heading over to the cafe to grab a quick lunch. slip-ping out of the lab and past the office of my boss where he is quietly working, i head for the bright atrium. there are so many people here! oh, it IS almost lunch...it gets so busy from the rush of people swooping in from the midtown business district. i am hoping to snag a sandwich and have a quiet moment in the reading room across the plaza. if i take the quick way back i should have enough time...
