Dear Students & Parents, Welcome back! The summer is nearly over, but we’re thrilled because the fall season means more exciting science and engineering programming. I’m grateful to you and your commitment to education, community, and family. It seems that every year we, as families, are faced with more and more commitments and professional campuses, and making new friends. I know how hard it is to get up on a Saturday morning, but trust me, your hard work will pay off and we are so glad you’re choosing to spend your time driving into science technology, engineering, and math! I’ve heard from many parents and students this year their incredible experiences and accomplishments. We have fourth graders who have patents pending on inventions they created at DAPCEP. We have students who’ve been awarded 4-year scholarships and internships with major corporations. We have so many more students who are now officially DAPCEP alumni and starting their first year of college! We are so proud of all of our students—including you! You asked and we listened! New in 2014, we will be hosting a closing ceremony to celebrate student accomplishments. This will be a new tradition and great way to end each semester. Parents and students will be invited to attend the ceremony, receive certificates, and display their projects. We look forward to this event, so mark your calendars for November 15, 2014. Your participation in DAPCEP is an investment in your child’s future. We believe that DAPCEP is making a difference in the lives of young people through our educational programming, motivation and exposure. MISSION The mission of DAPCEP is to increase the number of historically underrepresented students who are motivated and prepared academically to pursue degrees leading to careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related fields through K-12 supplemental educational programming. We consider all applicants without regard to residence or legally protected status. Please understand that due to the limitations of space in each DAPCEP program, admission decisions of the Program Directors are final.

ADMISSIONS POLICY

The DAPCEP admission is designed to maximize fairness and consideration of all eligible applicants. Each Program Director or selection committee seeks to have a qualified, balanced, broad base of students, each of whom must meet the eligibility requirements for the desired program. Typically, each program has more applicants than it has allotted spaces. While every consideration is given to maximize total enrollment with as many students as possible receiving their first selection, the numerical realities of the program and its funding will result in some students not getting their desired program or not even admitted to DAPCEP at all. DAPCEP ADMISSIONS PROCESS

Process Overview Our enrollment periods occur annually in January and September. The application process for programs consists of completing an online application, scan and upload a transcript or report card, and a pay the $25 application fee with credit card or debit card via Paypal. If you would like to pay by Cashier’s Check or Money Order ONLY, applications should be completed online and dropped off with the payment in person and a receipt will be given for each application. The application can be completed and printed from our website. Transcripts and report cards will not be returned. Notification letters for fall programs will be mailed during the week of September 30, 2014. Accepted students will receive a letter of acceptance providing course instructions. If your student is not accepted into DAPCEP, a $25 credit voucher will be included with the student’s non-accept letter that can be used toward the next DAPCEP session. Orientation ** NEW PROCESS ** Course orientation will occur on the first day of each class. WE WILL NO LONGER HOST A GROUP ORIENTATION. DAPCEP will have an all program closing ceremony at Second Ebenezer on November 15, 2014. Booklet Course and payment information can be found in the course booklet which can be viewed online and is also available for pickup at the DAPCEP office. The course booklet contains a detailed list of courses (date, time, description and location).

Directions to Complete the Application Online 1. Go to our website www.dapcep.org and click “Apply to DAPCEP”. 2. You will need to create a login with a username and password. The password must be at least six

characters with letters and numbers, no symbols. It is recommended that you use a parents’ email address that is checked regularly. The username and password will be immediately sent to this email address so that you can save this information. Then, establish a security question.

3. Enter the students contact information and click “Create User”. 4. Continue to populate all fields and click “Save” at the end of each section. 5. Select payment option.

a. Credit Card or Debit Card payments: i. Click BUY NOW and you will be transferred to PAYPAL system. ii. Complete payment transaction. iii. Return to enrollment system. iv. Scan and upload grades. v. Print application for your records only.

b. If check or money order, select that option and click save. You will have to print application and bring payment to the DAPCEP office.

c. If applying for financial aid, select that option and click save. You will have to print application, and bring financial aid packet to the DAPCEP office.

6. You will know you are at the end of the application process when you see “Assemble Application Package”. Click on “Assemble Application Package” to print the five-page application.

7. If there are no errors, the application will appear in a HTML or PDF file. Then you can print out the application package using your browser print function.

8. If there is another student in the household, treat them as individuals and establish a new log in and password for them. We recommend you using a parent email address. Once you establish a new user name and password, this information will be emailed to the address listed during the online registration. Save this email or the user name and password information in a safe place.

9. Failure to complete registration for each student using their own user name and password, will merge student records. As a result, the DAPCEP database will have inaccurate information for the students in your household. This could lead to your children not being selected for enrollment.


Criteria to Receive a Certificate of Completion

1. Student must attend all class sessions. Any student who misses two (2) class sessions (regardless of circumstances) will not receive a certificate. Class sign-in sheets determine attendance.

2. Student shall not be tardy more than one (1) time or they will not receive a certificate. 3. If required by a particular course, students shall achieve 80% (B letter grade) or higher from the overall

course. 4. If required by a particular course, students must complete all homework assignments. 5. If required by a particular course, students must take all exams.

If required by a particular course, students must take a pre and post-test

DAPCEP APPLICATION FEE PROCESS Process Overview

Because of changes in regional philanthropy, economic conditions and the need for increased organizational self-reliance, DAPCEP has added a $25 Application Fee for Saturday programs. The application fee is a requirement for all students applying to DAPCEP. Application fees should be paid online with credit/debit card via PayPal. Payments in the form of a Cashier’s Check or Money Order ONLY must be submitted at the DAPCEP office. No personal checks or CASH will be accepted.

Payment Process Once you have submitted your completed application and application fee online, you will receive a payment receipt via email with your student’s ID number listed. If you pay in person, your will receive a stamped receipt card. This stamped notification indicates you have completed the application process and have paid the application fee for the student. This receipt can be used as a reference if you have any questions regarding the student’s acceptance. The enrollment receipt or application fee does NOT guarantee acceptance into DAPCEP. If the student is accepted, you will receive an official letter of acceptance from the DAPCEP office. We also offer financial assistance of as much as a 50% discount on the $25 per child fee for families who meet our criteria. Please contact the DAPCEP office for additional information

Families with Multiple Children

The fee is $25 per child or $100 for families with more than four children to enroll. Application fees for children in the same household can be included in one payment.

Refund Policy

No refunds will be provided. If a student is not selected for participation in DAPCEP, a credit voucher will be included with the student’s non-accept letter. The student will be encouraged to participate in the next Saturday program session, where the credit can be utilized.


Financial Aid Application DAPCEP has a $25 Application Fee for Saturday programs. The application fee is a requirement for all students applying to DAPCEP. We have limited financial assistance for families who meet our criteria to reduce the $25 application fee. If you are approved for financial assistance, your application fee will be reduced to $12.50 per child. The financial aid application must be turned in with your DAPCEP Program application during the enrollment period. You will have two weeks from the date on your notification letter pay your full or reduced application fee. You must pay in person at the DAPCEP Office. We will ONLY accept money orders and cashier checks.

4th GRADE Everyday Engineering University of Detroit Mercy This course is a half-Saturday program that provides insights into the basic principles of engineering through extensive hands-on activities. Friction, motion, levers, and mathematics are but a few of the topics taken from the students' everyday experiences that will be explored. A parent/guardian is required to attend and participate in at least two sessions. Bus transportation is not available for this course.

World in Motion 2.0 University of Detroit Mercy The World in Motion is a physics-based activity developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers. Totally hands-on, the class explores concepts of motion, force, inertia, velocity and air drag in a team setting. Bus transportation is not available for this course.

Pre-Engineering Math Wayne State University An interactive course for 6th grade students covering topics in the DAPCEP supplemental math course. Students will learn how to add, subtract, multiply and divide integers; locate coordinates on a grid; read a number line; how to solve equations and expressions with different operations. Students will explore various mathematics topics through hands-on activities. Experiences involving active applications of concepts, problem solving a mental mathematics will be provided. Pre-Engineering Math is a course intended to provide students with a basic working knowledge of algebraic ideas and geometry. To be eligible for a certificate students must complete all classroom and homework assignments, and must take the pre and post-test.

6th – 8th GRADE Coding 201-1 Scratch Computer Programming Kidpreneur (Location: UAW-GM, 200 Walker Street, Detroit, MI 48207) class is for kids ages 13 and under to learn about computer programming by using the popular M.I.T. software called Scratch to design and develop a video game. The goal of the class is to begin with the fundamentals of computer programming by learning how to debug and develop a game through coding. The students will complete group exercises as well as individual projects to eventually experience the process of developing a game and make it into a business/startup.



7th – 8th GRADE Sports Science SuperAchievers Learning Academy (Location: UAW-GM, 200 Walker Street, Detroit, MI 48207) This exciting course examines the relationship between sports and principles of mathematics and science. The course focuses on real-world application of math and science principles in sports such as baseball, football, basketball, track and field, and more! This is one course you don't want to miss!


What Can You Do at the Detroit Zoo? Detroit Zoological Society (Location: Detroit Zoological Society, 8450 W. 10 Mile Road, Detroit, MI 48067) Have you ever wondered what it takes to work at a zoo? Come and explore the many STEMM careers we have to offer! Learn how to carefully observe animals and chart your findings like the Zoo’s animal welfare staff. Discover how to test water quality and why it’s vital for the animals that reside here. Get a behind-the-scenes peak at what it takes to design an animal habitat. Meet with a veterinarian and tour the animal hospital. And more! Bus transportation is not available for this course.

Course Code: 33510 Saturdays: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm Dates: October 11 – November 15 Building a World From SCRATCH Quicken Loans (Location: 1050 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48226) SCRATCH is a multi-media programming language that allows the novice user to create stories, games, and animations. SCRATCH offers an online community where students can continue to create projects and share them with others. During the first few sessions, students will learn SCRATCH and explore the programming process individually. Then, students will work in small groups to create their projects for the last class. Please attach an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper that contains one typewritten paragraph (double spaced, 12 point Arial font) on the subject “I am interested in programming because...”. There is a parent presentation on the last day of class with an optional tour of Quicken Loans. **FEMALE STUDENTS ONLY** Bus transportation is not available for this course.

Course Code: 38000 Saturdays: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm Dates: October 11 – November 15 Computer Programming University of Michigan Dearborn In this course students will be exposed to short and basic computer programs using basic computer language such as QB. Students will learn about variables, logic statement, input/output commands, etc. At the end of the course students should be able to write short programs.


Intermediate Mathematics Wayne State University This course will deal with concepts in linear equations, graphing techniques. The material covered in this eight week plan will be: Basic Math review, Sets and real Numbers, Variables, Variable Expressions (i.e., equations with one and two variable), Cartesian Coordinate System, Ordered Pairs, Graphing the Linear Function (y=mx+b). To be eligible for a certificate students must complete all classroom and homework assignments, and must take the pre and post-test.

Dates: October 11 – November 15 Video Game Design The Creation Station (Location: Oakland University, Rochester, MI) In this program students learn how to plan, program and realize the creation of video games that can be played on PCs. Students will also learn about various career opportunities available in the games industry and the types of colleges or universities that have programs that will allow them to enter into the field of games creation with ease.


7th – 9th GRADE

Transforming Engineering Dreams Triumph Church (Location: 2760 East Grand Blvd, Detroit, MI 48211) This class is designed to expose students to various types of engineers and their career opportunities. Students will conduct individual studies of engineers to explore the actual work of engineers and report in small groups, Small groups collectively shall investigate broad engineering genres by presenting their findings and inviting real engineers as resource guests to share . Each student shall be responsible for preparing a case analysis of an engineer of choice. Finally, students must take the theoretical concepts learned and create a life plan for becoming an engineer.


ACT Exam Conquerors Program Level 1 SuperAchievers Learning Academy (Location: UAW-GM, 200 Walker Street, Detroit, MI 48207) This informative course will provide systemic, comprehensive training for the new ACT exam, utilizing ExamExperts’ highly motivational Accelerated Retention Learning (ARL) training method. Subjects covered include English, Mathematics, Reading Comprehension, Writing and Science Reasoning. Major focus is placed upon building student confidence while eliminating test anxiety.


E-Robotics Triumph Church (Location: 2760 East Grand Blvd, Detroit, MI 48211) Robotics is an exploratory experience for middle and high school students, which exposes them to opportunities often reserved for more affluent families. It is a course that allows students the opportunity to build and program a robot using Lego Mindstorms Education NXT Base Set. DAPCEP students are enabled to build and program real-life robotic solutions using servomotors, ultrasonic, sound, light, and touch sensors.



7th -11th GRADE Geometry Oakland University This rigorous course is for the high achieving student who has demonstrated success in Algebra II. Topics of coverage include Trigonometric Identities, Formulas and Functions. Employing a “flipped classroom” teaching approach, the instructor will review the lecture material and discuss its practical relevance for the first 30 minutes, then proceed to engage the students while they solve many sets of practice problems for the remaining time in the class. Students must have a B or better in Mathematics to apply.


8th GRADE

Algebra 1 Wayne State University The goal of the course is to develop the mathematical skills, critical thinking, and analytical problem-solving skills fundamental to the study of mathematics. The course begins with a study of the algebraic properties of numbers, variables, equalities, and inequalities. To be eligible for a certificate students must complete all classroom and homework assignments, and must take the pre and post-test.

8th – 9th GRADE

LEGO Robotics: Sumo Challenge University of Detroit Mercy This course will use the LEGO Mindstorms NXT System. Students will be given several mini challenges in which they will have to work in small groups to design, build and program a robot to accomplish various tasks. Students will learn principles of programming, behavior of real world systems, and controls. The last day will feature a display among the groups based on the challenges they accomplished. Bus transportation is not available for this course.


Urban Design Workshop 2013 IMHOTEP (Location: Lawrence Technological University, Southfield, MI) Students participate in an enhanced curriculum teaching the basic architectural principals and computer-aided design and drafting software. The training will give them basic drafting and presentations skills. Students will also work with and master Google Sketch UP software.



9th – 10th GRADE Computer Application Wayne State University Computer Applications is a five-week course designed to give students basic knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, keyboarding, presentation skills, and teamwork. The course also teaches critical thinking by assigning a case study relevant to real life experiences. Each week the students build upon the case study to deliver the assignment through applied skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Prezi and Internet Research.

Explorations in Biology University of Detroit Mercy A hands-on exploration of the principles governing biology. Topics will include ecology, genetics and physiology. Students will work with animals, plants and microbes. Students will learn how to use a microscope. Dissections will be a limited part of the class.

Exploring Renewable Energy Wayne State University This course will introduce students to a basic study of renewable energy. The course will specifically focus on sunshine and wind as major non-polluting sources of renewable energy. Students will familiarize themselves with topics in energy efficiency and conservation with a focus on converting the energy from wind, solar and hydrogen to usable energy.


Study Smarter Not Harder Wayne State University This course will teach students how to become more proficient at studying. Students will build a strong foundation of learning skills which they can use to develop study skills, expand their knowledge base, build confidence in their learning ability and improve their grades. To be eligible for a certificate students must complete all classroom and homework assignments, and must take the pre and post-test.


Transit Smart Moves University of Detroit Mercy This course will use the LEGO Mindstorms NXT System. Students will be given several mini challenges in which they will have to work in small groups to design, build and program a robot to accomplish various tasks. Students will learn principles of programming, behavior of real world systems, and controls. A robot will be programmed to navigate around a room or through a maze, play music, games, cruise adaptively, implement the Segway, Bluetooth communications, etc. The last day will feature a display and competition among the groups based on the challenges they accomplished.

Web Page Development University of Michigan Dearborn The objective of the course is to expose students to web page design to exhibit engineering products, texts, pictures, etc. Students enrolled in this class will use the Internet to extract information and educational material. Students will learn web page design, introduction to HTML, input information on the web and display that information. They will develop web page for product display that would include text and images and saving them on storage media. Students will also learn to create web page links.


9th – 12th GRADE Algebra Oakland University This rigorous course is for the serious student who has demonstrated success in basic arithmetic. Employing a “problem-based classroom” teaching approach, the instructor will review the lecture material and discuss its practical relevance for the first 30 minutes, then proceed to engage the students while they solve many sets of practice problems for the remaining time in the class. Student success will be heavily dependent upon their commitment to excellence while in class and their ability to view a 30-minute video (from home, school or library) during the week prior to the Saturday class. Nearly the full breadth of a common-core based Algebra I curriculum will be covered; however the depth of coverage is limited in order to accommodate time constraints.


10th – 11th GRADE ACT-SAT Math Preparation University of Michigan Dearborn Students will learn fundamental mathematics needed to successfully execute the math portion of ACT and SAT tests. Students will learn, analyze and practice basic mathematics and problems related to tests. This class is suited for students who are preparing to take ACT or SAT tests over the next six to 18 months.


10th – 12th GRADE

ACT Prep University of Detroit Mercy In this preparation course, students will learn to master concepts of the ACT Exam required to enter colleges and universities. Students will explore concepts in Math, Science, Reading and Computers to ensure a better understanding of each subject when preparing to take the exam.

SMILE! You’re on Candid Camera! Triumph Church (Location: 2760 East Grand Blvd, Detroit, MI 48211) By developing and using an electronic portfolio, students create an electronic portfolio, selecting from a variety of strategies for development, organization, storage and presentation. Which includes adding digital audio and video clips to the portfolio. Third credit covers reading assignments, issues, and research on electronic portfolio development for a variety of ages and situations, including useful criteria for evaluating portfolios based on national or local standards.


Digital Character Design: Happy Animation Triumph Church (Location: 2760 East Grand Blvd, Detroit, MI 48211) Digital Character Designer: From Novice to Pro! is an exploratory experience for high school students, which exposes them to various aspects of designing digital characters. This course is designed to show students the path necessary in becoming a novice of character digital designs to a PRO!


Pre-Calculus Wayne State University The content of this course is as follows: functions and limits, application of differentiation and integrations. The course begins with a study of the algebraic properties of numbers, variables, equalities, and inequalities. The concept of a function is introduced; algebraic, geometric, and numerical techniques are used to study the properties of functions. After a brief introduction to the concepts of trigonometry, trigonometric functions are examined. To be eligible for a certificate, students must complete all classroom and homework assignments, and must take the pre and post-test.


Calculus Oakland University This rigorous course is for the serious student who has demonstrated success in Trigonometry and Algebra II. Employing a “problem-based classroom” teaching approach, the instructor will review the lecture material and discuss its practical relevance for the first 30 minutes, then proceed to engage the students while they solve many sets of practice problems for the remaining time in the class. Student success will be heavily dependent

Students will attend mini-lessons during the classes so they can learn how to best build their bridges. Numerous math and science topics will be covered through out the course.

It is an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning about energy that identifies seven Essential Principals and a set of Fundamental Concepts to support each principle.


Walker Miller Energy Light Up Detroit with LEDs! (Location: UAW-GM, 200 Walker Street, Detroit, MI 48207) Energy Literacy is an understanding of the nature and role of energy in the world and daily lives accompanied by the ability to apply this understanding to answer questions and solve problems. It is an interdisciplinary


approach to teaching and learning about energy that identifies seven Essential Principals and a set of Fundamental Concepts to support each principle.


Computer Aided Design Using CATIA University of Detroit Mercy DAPCEP students will learn to create 3D CAD solid models using CATIA V5. Students will learn to create 2D sketches and then how to generate 3D models from the sketches. This course covers fundamentals of CAD design and provides a good foundation for the engineering academic curriculum. CATIA is one of two major CAD systems used by GM, Ford and Chrysler.


11th – 12th GRADE The Probability of Life Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan This course will target the math and sciences used by actuarial, underwriting, investor and marketing and highlight the different perspectives from Blue Cross. We will cover the difference between these areas and how each contributes to the success and bottom line of our company. Bus transportation is not available for this course.



Parent Advisory Committee The PAC (Parent Advisory Committee) of DAPCEP (Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program) was formed by parents of DAPCEP students in May, 1980 as the Parent Ad Hoc Committee. The purpose of this group has been and continues to be to support the programs and activities of DAPCEP and its students. PAC has several subcommittees as well as an active teen component to their organization. The teens in grades 8th through 12th meet the same time as the parents. Their calendar of events is diverse and well received by the students and parents alike. The Teen Coordinators are working professionals from major industries throughout metropolitan Detroit. They are highly motivated and keep the teens enthusiastically involved in activities throughout the PAC year. The current membership fee is $10 per year per member. Teen membership is included with the parent membership. The Parent Advisory Committee of DAPCEP is a registered 501c3 organization in the state of Michigan.
