Practice Safe Driving According to the Federal Highway Administration, crashes on
snowy and icy pavement result in more than 1,300 deaths and
116,000 injuries each year. Winter driving can be tricky and
requires a driver’s full attention, so protect yourself and your
family this year by altering your driving techniques. When a
road is slick, avoid using cruise control to ensure you have full
control over the vehicle’s speed at all times. It’s also important
to never slam on the brakes, as this will cause a vehicle to skid
and lose control. Instead, brake gently. Additionally, give
yourself extra travel time and patience this season. By doing
so, you’ll be sure to keep you and your family safer during
harsh driving conditions.

FROM THE ASSESSOR’S OFFICE It’s Exemption Time!!! Renewal forms for the Enhanced Star and the Senior Citizens with limited income exemption (Livingston County ceilings are $0-$28,399.99) must be completed along with your 2014 income tax forms, or income statements if you don’t file income tax, and returned to your Assessor’s office by
March 1, 2016 . Don’t delay! March 1st will be here before you know it.
Remember that if you or your spouse will turn 65 years of age this year you can apply for an Enhanced Star Exemption by March 1st, 2016. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL YOUR BIRTHDAY. Contact your Assessor.
All Agricultural Renewal Exemptions MUST be filed by March 1st, 2016. It is the Taxpayer’s responsibility to renew the exemption. We mail out to everyone a renewal form; if you did not get one for some reason it is your responsibility to renew the exemption.
If you are a new homeowner and it is your primary residence do not forget to file for the STAR exemption. The initial application needs to be filed with the Assessor’s Office, not the State.

Hi, my name is Pooter Jr. I am 12 weeks old and a very naughty kitten! I like to take the Christmas tree
bulbs and swat them across the floor. I am the dapperest of all the Jrs! One of my owners, Erin, sent
this letter in for me; she is 11 years old.

Shop locally. Shopping locally not only supports local businesses, but it also contributes to the local economy. Shopping locally keeps money in the community, w hich can benefit everyone. Shopping locally produces a trickle-dow n effect, as local businesses that are thriving may patronize other local businesses, and so on. This, in turn, helps grow other businesses in the community, making it a nicer place to live and w ork.

M any bakeries and professional cake designers base custom cake prices on the number of servings, and not on a flat rate per cake. Such bakeries commonly rely on the popular serving charts from W ilton’s and Earlene’s, as caterers are trained to cut party cakes to these standards. Recognize, how ever, that cake prices may increase depending on the intricacy of the decorations or if the cake must be completed in a short amount of time. Cake creators often consider their cakes and other baked goods to be edible w orks of art. If you desire a custom cake, the price w ill reflec t the artistry and the time that goes into its creation.

Common Shaving Myth Debunked DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 48-year-old, athletically fit man with excessive body hair on my back, chest and arms. I see that the younger generation of men at the gyms, pools and beaches seem to all groom (shave) their body hair for better appearance. I started trimming down but have not fully shaved. My concern is whether, when you cut hair, it grows faster. When I’m in my upper 60s or 70s and decide to stop, will my body hair grow to 4 inches long? Does your body hair continue to grow at a normal rate when you’re older, or does it slow down? Please advise. -- M.C.
ANSWER: No, it’s a myth that cutting or shaving hair makes it grow faster. It certainly might seem to come in more coarsely, since the cut hair under the surface of the skin is thick. But there is no effect on hair growth. Hair growth rates stay roughly the same throughout adulthood.
I am aware that the current trend is for hairless-appearing skin. However, I see a lot of people with infections from shaving. If you do shave, use plenty of mild shaving cream or gel, always use a new, sharp razor, and use a soothing aftershave cream or lotion to help close the pores after shaving.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 86-year-old male in good health. I take a 40-mg simvastatin and a 150-mcg levothyroxine. I exercise three times a week -- one hour with weights and one hour of aerobics (elliptical and treadmill). On the treadmill, I go from a speed of 3.5 for 25 seconds to 6.0 for 25 seconds. My heart rate goes from 89 to 170 (sometimes 165 to 178) but drops back to about 89 when I return to the slower speed. I have heard that your exercise heart rate should be 212 minus your age times 80 percent. That would be 101. Does my 170 for 25 seconds sound OK? -- E.N.W.
ANSWER: No, that sounds too fast for an 86-year-old. The formula you mention is one frequently stated, and it isn’t particularly accurate, since there is a great deal of individual variation. But 170 is very fast for an 86-year-old. I wonder if it’s accurate. A pulse monitor, using electrical impulses, is the most accurate, but even these can be fooled by electrical interference. If it really is so fast, I would worry about an exercise-induced tachycardia, and a visit to your doctor or cardiologist would be a good idea, especially if you are having symptoms of chest discomfort or shortness of breath.
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Do peanuts (which are not nuts, but legumes) afford the same health benefits as nuts? -- A.
ANSWER: Most of the studies showing benefits of nuts included peanuts as well. Peanuts probably have the same benefits as tree nuts.
Unfortunately, many people are allergic to nuts, and many to peanuts. Those people can’t get the benefits of eating nuts, as it is unsafe, even life-threatening on occasion.

My sis and I were doing laundry @ Caledonia Laundromat. An older man came in also; he had to use a micro to talk. We conversed with him and said bye upon leaving. We went to a local restaurant and he came in and ordered his food to go. The waitress came and took our bill. He left. We asked her about our bill, she told us he paid our bill. This has never happened to us before. We wish to say Thank you and God bless. KW & DS
The Lima VFW, Post 26, wishes to thank the wonderful people who gave to our annual drive for patients and residents of the Canandaigua VA Hospital and Zion House.
On Sunday, January 31, Riga Recreation, in partnership with the Churchville Lions Club, held its annual “WinterFest”, minus the snow, at the Churchville Elementary
In early December, I called a local company for service. My kitchen sink drains appeared clogged and overflowing. Service was prompt and courteous within a few hours. The sewer drain was cleaned and a venting air valve was installed. I paid the bill on site. Later, I wrote the company for a specific breakdown of this outrageous charge. To date, weeks later, no reply! Be careful who you hire. Disgruntled Widow
It’s pretty sad when someone hits your dog and doesn’t even stop to see if the dog is dead or not, or even try to find the owner! On Thursday night at about 8:30 to 9pm my daughter’s dog got out. After many hours of looking we found him dead where someone
hit him and just took off! The dog had tags on him where he was from. You would think they would try to find the owner but NO! People nowadays just don’t care! They say karma is bad, but and I hope karma finds whoever did this! Maybe someday you might lose a pet to a hit and run driver!
To the couple who ended up with my groceries: What were you thinking as you put my groceries into your fridge? (Stealing) At least you could have notified the friendly market of the mistake.
I am very concerned about the ambulance corps in my town. There is evidence that the drivers regularly use the ambulance to transport themselves to pick up lunches and other food runs. It seems that the ambulances should not be used for this purpose. The volunteers should use their own transportation to do food runs. The ambulance is there for medical purposes and not for personal use. I don’t see the fire department loading 6 foot Hoagies onto their official vehicles and neither should the ambulance.
School. The community was treated to the Lions’ “World Famous” Chicken BBQ along with a kid’s carnival, caricature drawings, chair massages, juggling, and magic tricks with The Magic Guy! Thanks go out to all who helped one way or another. The turnout by the Riga community is to be complimented as the Lions sold out all their BBQs and there was a constant flow of the crowd throughout the day. All involved look forward to WinterFest 2017 and hopefully snow for outdoor activities! David Thomas Recreation Supervisor
On Tuesday, February 2nd, I was shopping at the Wal-Mart in Canandaigua. While checking out I realized that I had overspent. I’m so thankful for the shopper behind me. She contributed the extra money to cover the difference so I could make my complete purchase. Thank you so much! Grateful Shopper
I want to thank the two guys who came out of The Nines on a cold snowy night to help tie up my front bumper after I hit a deer on 20A. It was so nice of them to leave the warmth of the restaurant and help get me on my way. THANK YOU!!!

Ways to stretch your money further
Living on fixed income after retirement requires that many retirees make some financial concessions. Retirement income likely won’t equal the income professionals earned while they were still working, so men and women approaching retirement may want to begin prioritizing their purchases and choosing which luxuries they can and cannot live without going forward.
Managing on a fixed income may necessitate some changes, but a little frugality and financial wherewithal can ensure seniors need not compromise too much during their golden years.
• Change your dining habits. Many people enjoy meals out on the town after getting home from work and spending time with the family. Retirees have more flexible schedules, and adjusting the time of day when they dine out can add up to considerable savings. Many brunch and lunch offerings are less expensive than dinner menus, and seniors can use this to their advantage. Meet up for lunch and spend less. If you prefer take-out, order from the lunch specials and then reheat your food at dinnertime.
• Ask about senior discounts. Various restaurants, stores and other retailers offer senior discounts. Inquire about discounts before making purchases and take advantage of any offers.
• Pool your resources. Bulk shopping clubs enable individuals to save money on the cost of many goods and services. However, for seniors living in two-person
households, it may seem counterintuitive to purchase items in bulk. Split the cost of shopping club memberships with fellow retirees. This allows you to get discounted prices without having to store excessive amounts of food.
• Shop around. Instead of shopping only at stores you’re familiar with, go where the deals are. Many people are surprised to learn that drug stores often charge less than supermarkets for personal grooming products and household supplies. Shopping online also may yield some good deals. Before making any online purchases, familiarize yourself with shipping costs, which may negate the savings.
• Sign up for rewards programs. Rewards programs may lead to a few extra promotional emails throughout the week, but the savings reaped can be considerable and well worth the nuisance of seeing your spam folder fill up each day. Many savings clubs have replaced traditional coupons, saving seniors the effort required to scan circulars looking for deals.
Living on a fixed income requires seniors to monitor their spending more carefully than they likely had to while they
were still working full time.

Ramsey Constructors, Inc. Employees Donate $8,200
Thanks to the generosity of the employees at Ramsey Constructors, Inc., Noyes Health received an $8,200 donation for the Ann and Carl Myers Cancer Center.
Two weeks before the annual Ramsey Constructors Christmas party, the employees at Ramsey decided they wanted to start a collection for the Ann and Carl Myers Cancer Center. President and CEO, Chris Ramsey and Vice President, Michelle Paroda told employees they would match the amount raised. The employees generously contributed $4,100, and with the match from Chris and Michelle, Ramsey Constructors employees awarded $8,200 to the Ann and Carl Myers Cancer Center.
Presenting the check to Noyes Health CEO Amy Pollard, was Ramsey Constructors employee Catie Brice. Catie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. “I have cancer, cancer doesn’t have me,” said Catie. “I hope this cancer center will offer a team that will provide the care that I myself have received.”
“Noyes Health is grateful to have community partners like Chris, Michelle, Catie and the employees of Ramsey Constructors. We are humbled to have seen an enormous amount of support for this
project already and we have just begun to gear up our fundraising efforts,” said Cynthia Oswald, director of Public Relations and the Foundation.
The Ann and Carl Myers Cancer Center project, a collaboration of Wilmot Cancer Institute, Jones Memorial Hospital and Noyes Health, is unique in our region and comes at a time when health systems across the country are forging relationships to ensure specialty services while improving quality. Information on the project or how to make a donation is available on the Noyes Health website or by calling Kellie Sylvester at 585-335-4212. You can also follow the project on Facebook at: #AnnandCarlMyersCancerCenter

Easy ways to improve workplace communications
Lack of communication at work can result in low employee morale and an uncomfortable work environment. Proper communication is vital to a healthy company. Otherwise, an atmosphere of discomfort might develop among employees. There are different steps to take to improve workplace communication and keep a business running smoothly.
- Supervisors must be accessible. Instead of setting down the law of the land, supervisors should have an open-door policy and welcome suggestions or even complaints without repercussions.
- Hold staff meetings. Staff meetings enable everyone to come together and voice their opinions. Meetings also serve to let employees know their opinions are important.
- Conduct frequent staff reviews. Supervisors should regularly meet with employees and give the employees the opportunity to talk about issues that may be important to the staff or themselves. It also allows a boss to understand what each staff member does and if there is room for improvement.

How to simplify your transition to a new career - Educate
yourself on office politics. It’s helpful to know a company’s
rules in advance. This may be as simple as learning the dress
code for employees and any other rules and regulations of the
office. Do employees dine out for lunch, or do they eat
primarily at their desks? What is the tendency for coworkers to

Pro athletes: Mind your business Pro football player Ray Lewis’ business helps the unemployed.
Baltimore Ravens veteran linebacker Ray Lewis is known as much for his generous charitable efforts as he is for his devastating tackles against members of opposing offenses.
So it is no surprise that he takes a social entrepreneurship approach to his for-profit ventures.
“Everything that Ray does is designed to help someone,” said Dan Caporale, one of Lewis’ partners and the president of RL52 Staffing.
After the economic downturn, Lewis wanted to do something to help the millions of unemployed professionals across the country. He’s been directly involved with the development of his staffing company, which places people with national and international companies. He actually helps establish partnerships with corporate executives.
RL52 Staffing launched in May with overwhelming response. Employees are working to fill about 50 positions in the United States and abroad, and they’ve working with a pool of thousands of qualified applicants.
“I guess you should be careful what you wish for,” said Caporale. “We almost have more on our plate than we can handle.”
