Mentor Planner – Achieve more with Optimization and Planning
What makes the load forecaster unique is that it is based on historical data from the heating network, weather data and day types (day / holiday). It can be predicted exactly how the heat consumption in the district heating network is going to be.
Combining SCADA real-time measurements and online weather forecast data, Mentor Planner can predict heat usage today and 5 days ahead with a minimum accuracy of 95%.
The heat load forecast plays a fundamental role in planning and optimization and is available in two versions:
The standard forecast shows the total consumption of the supply zone.
The extended forecast divides the heating network into any number of zones, each with a separate heat projection and profile, summed up to the total consumption of the coverage area.
By dividing the forecast into zones you can obtain:• Possibility to use different consumer profiles per zone (industry / residential area)• Possibility of optimizing the flow temperature per zone.• Possibility of calculating time behavior during transport of thermal energy

Mentor Planner – Achieve more by optimization and planning
Benefits combining load forecasting and energy storage:
▪ Possible to optimize the district energy production and distribution
▪ Optimization of the production of electricity regardless of the heating and cooling requirement
▪ Release the full flexibility in a CHP plant at the electricity market
▪ Being able to plan the boiler production in advance instead of responding when it is too late to
optimize

Case story
Danish district heating utility
Mentor Planner – Danish district heating utility – case story
▪ The 4th biggest utility in Denmark
▪ Consuming 1.900.000 MWh of heat
▪ Wants to save energy by reducing loss in the DH network
▪ The energy loss in the network was 19 % before optimization
▪ The solution with Mentor planner was divided into 2 steps.
By dividing the forecast into zones you get:
▪ Possibility of different profiles for each zone example: Industry versus housing▪ Ability to optimize the flow temperature in different zones
Standard forecast
A standard forecast showing the total consumption for one supply area
Extended forecast
Extended forecast where you divide the network into any number of zones with separate consumption forecast and profile
Mentor Planner is a Tool for optimizing and planning:
Mentor Planner – Danish district heating utility – case story
Step 1: Implementing the optimization of the supply temperature to reduce loss
The utility saves 184.800 Euro per
year
They divided the network into 12 individual energy
zones
They reduced the loss with 5.600 MWh in the 1st
step
They reduced the supply
temperature from 78 °C to 74 °C
Because of the tarif for the end
user, they have to balance the same temperature for
the whole network.
Facts:
Being able to calculate thelowest possible supply
temperature
Through the lower temperature to reduce loss
Make energy savings throughthe lower loss
Mentor Planner – Danish district heating utility – case story
Step 2:
Facts:
By implementing smart metering, the utility can change
the tarif for the end customer
And therefore work withdifferent supply
temperatures for every energy zone
The average supply temperature can be reduced a lot more
By working with the temperature sets for the 12 zones individually the utility can reduce the supply temperature from 74°C to 69°C
Therefore the loss can be reduced further with 8.500 MWh
per year
The value for the energy savings is 280.500 € per year
Mentor Planner – Danish district heating utility – case story
The return of investment is under 6 months
Summary:
The energy loss in the network can be reduced
17% per year
The value for the energy savings is together 465.300 € per year
By working with the supply temperature sets
for the 12 zones individually the utility can make 14.100 MWh in
energy savings
