The Dance Program at Texas A&M University is housed in the Department of Health and Kinesiology and offers a degree in University Studies-Dance Concentration, dance as a second teaching field for teacher certification and a minor. Academic studies in dance can lead to numerous opportunities within the field of performance and education. Students can obtain the necessary tools to teach, choreograph, direct high school/communtiy programs or continue their education in dance at a higher level. The Dance Program also provides numerous performance opportunities including an annual dance program concert, Choreographers’ Showcase, senior concerts, student organization concerts, performances on campus and throughout the community and state, regional, and national gala performances. Students are also given the opportunity to attend various festivals and conferences allowing them to take master classes with teachers from all over the world as well as perform at the national and international level. TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY DANCE PROGRAM ADMISSION Acceptance into the Dance Program is by application and audition. Prospective Texas A&M University students may audition for the Dance Program prior to acceptance into the University, but their Dance Program status will not be released until they have their Texas A&M University acceptance letter. Applications: tamudance.tamu.edu The auditions are held three times a year and consist of a modern technique class, a ballet class and a solo performance of one-and-a-half minutes. The studio has two mirrored sides and portable ballet barres. There are plans to convert this studio into a 125 seat house with three wings, a crossover space and a modest lighting plot. This performance space holds informal performances for guest artists, faculty and student work. THE PILATES STUDIO is equipped with Pilates mats, over balls, rollers, power circles and Thera Bands. The University also has two Pilates Reformers which are used in independent study courses. The studio has a wood floor, two mirrored walls and a new sound system with surround sound. THE TAP/BALLROOM STUDIO has a wood floor, mirrors and a stereo system. In the evening, this studio is open to Rec Sports, and students are allowed to reserve this space for rehearsals. GUEST ARTISTS Our guest artist program is funded by an annual initiative by the Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts, which allow us to bring guest artists in from all over the nation to teach master classes, set repertory on dance program students and perform.
