Not to be confused with New Jack Swing but….
• With the way swing dance was developed, do you consider it similar to any of the modern hip hop dances’ development?
• Or is it more towards the traditional ballroom dances?

Salsa! • The Salsa dance has evolved from
Latin and Caribbean dances. • Salsa is almost the same as the
Mambo in that the partners both have a pattern of six steps danced over eight counts of music.
• The dance has been influenced by many cultures, but it originated in Cuba.
• The Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Puerto Rico have all had some influence on the dance.
• There are many different styles of salsa that vary by location: Cuban-style salsa, Columbian style-salsa, L.A.-style salsa, New York-style salsa, Puerto-Rican style salsa, and Casino Reudo- style salsa.

Hula Dance
The hula was pegged as by missionaries as being too “exotic” but was originally done as a Hawaiian ritual.
King Kalakaua's was a easygoing, fun loving person so,
under his reign, in 1874 the ban on Hula was
trashed. "Hula is the language of the heart and therefore the of the Hawaiian people.“
—King K Hula Kahiko (Ancient hula) Hula Auana (Modern hula)

Aloha Hula • Traditional drums- Pahu, Puniu, Ipu heke
– Made from gourds, coconut or breadfruit tree trunk, or half coconut shell with skin stretched over it
• Other commonly used instruments are the 'uli'uli (feather decorated gourd rattle), pu'ili (split bamboo
rattle), and kala'au (sticks). There is a close correspondence between the foot patterns and the rhythmic patterns of the instruments.• Nowadays, the traditional instruments used for the hula has been replaced by the guitar and ukulele.

Question• What other dances do you think have become
more modern in American culture?• Given the oppressed practice of the Hula
which other dances in American culture do you think have a similar history?
