The South-London born songstress and disgustingly talented multi-instrumentalist is currently up for three awards at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2013 – namely best folk singer, best album and best non-traditional track – with the winners set to be announced in February. Plus she’s stunning (not just anyone can make using a seashell as a telephone look cool), and her husband, Gerry Diver is quite a catch too – he’s accompanying her on the fiddle on tour. All this and she actually came quite late to folk after a wonderfully misspent youth clattering about at raves and leaping about to hip hop. But then she got hooked and fearlessly hauled the violin she learnt at school out of the loft and got playing. Her debut album Wild and Undaunted swiftly won MOJO Folk Album of The Year 2007 while the critics cannot get enough of her 2013 record Hidden Seam (which has been plastered with a five star review from the Guardian and looks like a runaway favourite for the Folk Award). Why not go and see what all the fuss is about? On the night there’ll also be support from moustachioed singer-songwriter Tom McConnell. SELF-styled “stand-up comedian, writer and actor who’s scared of mice and people” (according to his Twitter bio), Hal Cruttenden is bringing his Tough Luvvie to Cambridge Junction. He’s done quite a few odd jobs in TV – including a job on EastEnders for a start – but is rather enjoying life as a stand-up and comic writer ( Omid Djalili Show uses a lot of his lines for instance). There have been a myriad of appearances on Live At The Apollo, Mock the Week and Have I Got News For You, and he’s bagged his first Radio 4 sitcom, Hal, this year too. See him chat on about all things football, Facebook and food related with his trademark “mix of camp and straight, warm and catty humour”. It should be a right laugh.
