February 17, 2012 Mr. William Bronson, III Publisher The Daily Citizen 308 S. Thornton Avenue Dalton, GA 3 0720 Dear Mr. Bronson: I wanted to respond, on behalf of the Dalton Public Schools family, to your editorial questioning school spending in this past Wednesday's paper. The Dalton Board of Education believes that open government and transparent decision-making are important principles in maintaining the public trust. Our work sessions and monthly board meetings are open to the public. Any member of the community may address the board formally at a meeting or more informally through individual contact. My fellow board members and I routinely provide information or respond to questions from the community, parents, students, the media, and other public agencies. We are active members of this great community and regularly talk to people who seek to understand our perspectives- just as we seek to understand theirs. Much of the time we agree, although sometimes we do not. I believe we listen and often use the differences in perspective to better inform our decision-making. The topics raised in the editorial on Wednesday, February 15, have been discussed in public meetings on many occasions over the past 18 months. Our planning efforts and the options under consideration have received thorough coverage by area media from the presentations made at these work sessions and meetings. In addition, through requests for follow-up interviews and documents, The Daily Citizen has provided ongoing coverage. In December a board member, district administrators, and school administrators from Dalton High School and Morris Innovative High School met with the publisher, education reporter, and sports editor to answer questions about the ongoing development of the options for facilities and instructional programming. I believe any member of our community who has taken an interest in our proposed solutions to our district-wide facilities and program needs has had many opportunities to ask questions and to share their approval or concerns. On Monday, March 12, the board's agenda includes further discussion of the district projects addressed in the editorial. This forum for public participation happens every month- typically on the second Monday-with an agenda that is published the prior week. We welcome anyone in the community to our board meetings to participate in a discussion about our plans for middle and secondary students. Those who wish to address the board on any topic on the agenda on March 12 at 6:30p.m. at City Hall may do so by completing a participation form before the start of the meeting. The form is available at https://eboard.eboardsolutions.com/Meetings/TempFolder/Policies/4050 KCA-E(l) 7404 Exhibits.pdf and will be available at the entrance to the Council Chambers the night of the meeting. This month, the board addressed a desire to ease the guidelines for public participation, and the seven-day notice noted on the form will be waived pending revision of the policy.

We are excited about our direction and the positive momentum within our system, as well as with our key community partners; but, we also realize there is still a lot of work to do. The board and district administration look forward to continuing to share our ongoing planning for Dalton Middle School, Dalton High School, and Morris Innovative High School. We believe our community will be pleased with the stewardship of our resources and the way in which we are considering many voices and interests in our comprehensive planning.

We welcome all who choose to join the conversation.
