First Reading: Ezekiel 18.1-4, 25-end The word of the Lord came to me: What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, ‘The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? As I live, says the Lord GOD, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. Know that all lives are mine; the life of the parent as well as the life of the child is mine: it is only the person who sins that shall die. Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is unfair.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way unfair? Is it not your ways that are unfair? When the righteous turn away from their righteousness and commit iniquity, they shall die for it; for the iniquity that they have committed they shall die. Again, when the wicked turn away from the wickedness they have committed and do what is lawful and right, they shall save their life. Because they considered and turned away from all the transgressions that they had committed, they shall surely live; they shall not die. Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is unfair.’ O house of Israel, are my ways unfair? Is it not your ways that are unfair? Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, all of you according to your ways, says the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions; otherwise iniquity will be your ruin. Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed against me, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, says the Lord GOD. Turn, then, and live. This is the Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

The Collect, Post Communion Prayer, Readings and Music for the 8.00am, 9.00am, 11.45am and 6.00pm services

The Collect for The Fifteenth Sunday after Trinity God, who in generous mercy sent the Holy Spirit upon your Church in the burning fire of your love: grant that your people may be fervent in the fellowship of the gospel that, always abiding in you, they may be found steadfast in faith and active in service; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Post Communion for The Fifteenth Sunday after Trinity Keep, O Lord, your Church, with your perpetual mercy; and, because without you our human frailty cannot but fall, keep us ever by your help from all things hurtful, and lead us to all things profitable to our salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 25. vs 1-8 1. Unto thee, O Lord, will I lift up my soul; my God, I have put my trust in thee * O let me not be confounded, neither let mine enemies triumph over me. 2. For all they that hope in thee shall not be ashamed * but such as transgress without a cause shall be put to confusion. 3. Shew me thy ways, O Lord * and teach me thy paths. 4. Lead me forth in thy truth, and learn me * for thou art the God of my salvation; in thee hath been my hope all the day long. 5. Call to remembrance, O Lord, thy tender mercies * and thy loving-kindnesses, which have been ever of old. 6. O remember not the sins and offences of my youth * but according to thy mercy think thou upon me, O Lord, for thy goodness. 7. Gracious and righteous is the Lord * therefore will he teach sinners in the way. 8. Them that are meek shall he guide in judgement * and such as are gentle, them shall he learn his way. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son * and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be * world without end. Amen.

Second Reading: Philippians 2.1-13 If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death – even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

This is the Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading: Matthew 21.23-32 When Jesus entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, ‘By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?’ Jesus said to them, ‘I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?’ And they argued with one another, ‘If we say, “From heaven,” he will say to us, “Why then did you not believe him?” But if we say, “Of human origin,” we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet.’ So they answered Jesus, ‘We do not know.’ And he said to them, ‘Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, “Son, go and work in the vineyard today.” He answered, “I will not”; but later he changed his mind and went. The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, “I go, sir”; but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?’ They said, ‘The first.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, the tax-collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax-collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

Recessional Hymn: Christ triumphant, ever reigning (NEP613) 1. Christ triumphant, ever reigning, Saviour, Master, King! Lord of heaven, our lives sustaining, Her us as we sing: (Refrain) Yours the glory and the crown, The high renown, the eternal name.

2. Word incarnate, truth revealing, Son of Man on earth! Power and majesty concealing By your humble birth:

3. Suffering servant, scorned, ill-treated, Victim crucified! Death is through the cross defeated, Sinners justified:

4. Priestly king, enthroned for ever High in heaven above! Sin and death and hell shall never Stifle hymns of love:

5. So, our hearts and voices raising Through the ages long, Ceaselessly upon you gazing, This shall be our song: Tune: GUITING POWER John Barnard

Words: Michael Saward

ST JOHN’S CATHEDRAL MICHAELMAS FAIR

Wine and Beer Garden Appeal

The Michaelmas Fair Wine and Beer Garden has become a traditional gathering place for fairgoers to have a drink, relax and chat.

We are now in need of a new wine inventory and are depending on the congregation to supply wine from their homes or businesses.

This year we held a successful fine wine auction at a Michaelmas Fair fund raising dinner. The auctioned wines had been donated to the Wine and Beer Garden over the past few years.

Please let us have any wines you wish to donate, from one bottle to a case. If the bottle is a fine wine and you wish to be recognized for your contribution please let us know your name, and the name of the wine.

Your bottles may be left in the Cathedral office and marked ‘Wine and Beer Garden’.

As a way to help us understand our Cathedral Community and its ministry, there will be a feature article in the Pew Bulletin every fourth Sunday of the month.

DO YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT ST JOHN’S ?

Michaelmas Fair

I have been invited to write a few words on my involvement with St John’s Cathedral, and in particular with the annual Michaelmas Fair. I am a third generation British Born Chinese who came to live and work in Hong Kong several decades ago and have since been a regular member of the Cathedral congregation. I was married to Kwok Chun and my three daughters, Sarah, Amanda and Christina, were baptized and confirmed in St John’s. My granddaughter was baptized and Christina was married here. Kwok Chun works on Cathedral committees, and Sarah and Amanda have been choir members. All three girls attended SJC Sunday School. I have been the Vice-Chairman of the Board of SJC HIV Education Centre since its foundation, and I am a Sidesman. During the formation of the HKSKH Province I was a Cathedral lay representative to the Synod. I was a member of the Endowment Fund Committee. My longest commitment has been to the Michaelmas Fair, having been Chairman some 20 years ago and having continued to serve on the organizing committee in various capacities ever since. This year marks the 77th Anniversary of the Fair, and I thought you might find it of interest to see the names of some other past Chairpersons. This list is in chronological order and goes back to 1984: Anne Kiddle, Gloria Luk, Doris Ho, Raymond Fu, Jeffrey Dobbing, Rod Whitticase, Mary Board, Gordon Jones, Julianne Doe, Joseph Chan, Michael Lai, Peter Roberts, John Thompson, Richard Wong, Christine Chan, Kurt Baker, Jeff Evans, Lee Clubb, Tom Bispham, Judy Chua, Martin Matsui, Herbert Tsoi, Tim Zee, Ron Lye, John Dockerill, Stuart McDouall, John Breen, Simmy Woo, Doris Lye, Mary Szeto and now, Rita Chan. How many of these illustrious people’s names do you recognize? One person not on the list, but who you will all know is our Fair Patron, Mrs June Li. She is an indefatigable driving force and mentor. Her delicious Home Produce is also synonymous with the Fair During recent times, besides the actual Fair day, other activities have been organized throughout the year. Rita’s theme for the 2014 Fair ‘One Family, One Community’ helps summarize our mission - fellowship and outreach. Of course we also seek to raise funds for the Cathedral and various local charities. This year the big day is Saturday, 25th October. Come join us, bring your family and friends, join the fellowship, enjoy yourselves and help us raise funds. Derek Too
