2015-16 MAVERICKS NOTES Statistical research assistance provided by the Elias Sports Bureau DIRK ON THE NBA’S ALL-TIME SCORING LIST: Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki ranks seventh all-time in career scoring with 28,279 points. Shaquille O’Neal ranks sixth with 28,596 points. Nowitzki advanced from 10th place to seventh place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list in 2014-15. He passed Hakeem Olajuwon (26,946) for ninth place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list with a 19-foot jumper over Carl Landry at the 8:56 mark of the fourth quarter against Sacramento on 11/11/14. The basket gave him 17 points for the game and 26,947 for his career. Nowitzki became the top foreign-born scorer of all-time (Olajuwon, born in Nigeria, was the only player born outside of the United States with more career points than the 7-footer from Germany). Olajuwon had held that record since 12/6/01. Nowitzki became the ninth player in league history to reach 27,000 career points with an 18-foot jumper from the right elbow at the 6:07 mark of the third quarter at Charlotte on 11/17/14. He also became one of four players in NBA history to score 27,000 points with one franchise, joining Karl Malone (Jazz), Kobe Bryant (Lakers) and Michael Jordan (Bulls). Nowitzki passed Elvin Hayes (27,313) for eighth place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list with a 20-foot jumper at the 11:43 mark of the third quarter against the L.A. Lakers on 12/26/14 (the basket gave him six points for the game and 27,314 for his career). Nowitzki became the seventh player in NBA history to reach 28,000 career points with a 3-pointer at the 7:57 mark of the third quarter at Oklahoma City on 4/1/15 (the triple gave him 14 points for the game and exactly 28,000 for his career). In 2013-14, Nowitzki passed Oscar Robertson (26,710) for 10th place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list with a 19-foot jumper at the 11:46 mark of the fourth quarter at Utah on 4/8/14 (the basket gave him 18 points for the game and 26,711 for his career). Through 4/8/14, there had been 3,907 players who had appeared in an NBA game (and Nowitzki ranked 10th in scoring among those 3,907). Kobe Bryant is the only active player with more career points than Nowitzki. CARLISLE BECOMES MAVERICKS’ ALL-TIME WINNINGEST COACH: Rick Carlisle holds an all-time record of 343-224 (.605) with Dallas. Carlisle became the winningest coach in Mavericks’ history with a 103-93 victory at the L.A. Lakers on 11/1/15, passing Don Nelson (339) with win No. 340. He reached the milestone in his 561st game with the franchise (he went 340-221 in his first 561 games with Dallas). Carlisle, who was hired by Dallas in May of 2008, is the third-longest tenured head coach in the league behind San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich (hired in December 1996) and Miami’s Erick Spoelstra (April 2008). He signed a contract extension with the Mavericks on 11/5/15.

EIGHT MAVS IN DOUBLE FIGUERS IN SEASON-OPENING WIN AT PHOENIX: Eight players scored in double figures for the Mavericks in their 111-95 season-opening win at Phoenix on 10/28/15: Raymond Felton (18), Deron Williams (12), Dwight Powell (12), Dirk Nowitzki (11), Zaza Pachulia (10), Devin Harris (10), J.J. Barea (10) and Charlie Villanueva (10). It was the most double-figure scorers Dallas produced in a season-opening game in franchise history (previous: 7 in 1982-83 season opener at Denver on 10/29/82). It was also the most double-digit scorers any team had in an opener this season. The Mavericks had eight players in double figures a team record four times in 2014-15. With the victory over the Suns, the Mavericks improved to 21-15 (.583) all-time in season-opening games. The Mavericks have now won three of their last four season openers. THREE-GAME ROAD TRIP TO START THE YEAR: For the first time in franchise history, the Mavericks began a season with three straight road games. The Mavericks went 2-1 on the trip (winning 111-95 at Phoenix on 10/28/15, losing 104-88 at the L.A. Clippers on 10/29/15, and winning 103-93 at the L.A. Lakers on 11/1/15). The trip was capped off by Rick Carlisle becoming the all-time winningest coach in Mavericks’ history with the 103-93 victory at the L.A. Lakers on 11/1/15. 20,000 MANIAACS: Since 12/15/01, Dallas has sold out 560 regular-season home games, which is an NBA-best-sellout streak. Dallas has also sold out an additional 65 playoff games during that same stretch. The listed capacity for American Airlines Center is 19,200 but that can be surpassed because of attendance in the suites. Since moving into American Airlines Center (2001-02 season), the Mavericks have posted a record of 424-147 (.743) at home during the regular season. Dallas has sold out all of its games in each of the past 13 seasons.

BIRTHDAY BOYS: Mavericks guards J.J. Barea, Raymond Felton and Deron Williams were all born on the same day (June 26, 1984). What’s more, Felton’s North Carolina Tar Heels and Williams’ Illinois Fighting Illini met in the championship game of the 2005 NCAA Tournament (North Carolina won, 75-70). Williams (third overall pick by Utah) and Felton (fifth overall selection by Charlotte) were also separated by only two picks in the 2005 NBA Draft, each declaring for the draft following their junior seasons. HOW THE ROSTER WAS BUILT: The Mavericks had another busy offseason in 2015. Dallas selected Virginia guard Justin Anderson with the 21st overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft, adding youth to its roster. On 7/9/15, the Mavericks added a prolific 3-point shooter in free agent guard Wesley Matthews. Dallas also made a trade with Milwaukee on 7/9/15, acquiring veteran center Zaza Pachulia from the Bucks in exchange for a future second-round pick. The Mavericks signed three-time All-Star and Dallas native Deron Williams on 7/14/15, adding a veteran point guard to the mix. On 7/16/15, Dallas re-signed guard J.J. Barea, a key player from the Mavericks’ 2011 title team who rejoined the club in 2014-15. On 7/24/15, Dallas signed former Hawks guard John Jenkins. Dallas inked center Salah Mejri on 7/30/15, making him the first player of Tunisian decent to sign with an NBA team. On 7/31/15, the Mavericks signed former Slam Dunk champion Jeremy Evans. On 8/6/15, the Mavericks re-signed sharpshooter Charlie Villanueva. On 8/13/15, the Mavericks signed athletic big man JaVale McGee. The roster currently stands at 15 players. Eight of the 15 are in their first season with the Mavericks (Anderson, Evans, Jenkins, Matthews, McGee, Mejri, Pachulia and Williams). Two of the 15 are in their second stint with Dallas (Devin Harris and Barea) and two were members of the Mavericks’ 2011 NBA championship team (Dirk Nowitzki and Barea). Harris was also with the Mavericks when they reached the NBA Finals in 2006. 2014-15 SEASON RECAP: The Dallas Mavericks went 50-32 (.610) in 2014-15, marking their 14th 50-win season in franchise history (and their 12th in the last 15 years). Dirk Nowitzki completed his 17th NBA season and was named an All-Star for the 13th time in his career. Dallas appeared in the postseason for the 14th time in the last 15 years (20th time in team history). The Mavericks entered the first round of the NBA Playoffs as the seventh seed in the Western Conference, where they eventually fell to the No. 2 seed Houston Rockets in five games. HISTORY OF THE FRANCHISE: The Dallas Mavericks, now in their 36th season, have won three division titles (1987, 2007, 2010) and made 20 playoff appearances (including 12 straight from 2001-12). The Mavericks have made four Western Conference Finals appearances (1988, 2003, 2006, 2011) and advanced to the NBA Finals twice (2006 and 2011). Dallas captured its first NBA championship in 2011. MEDIA GUIDE AVAILABE ONLINE: The 2015-16 Mavericks digital media guide is available for download at mavs.com (http://www.mavs.com/team/2015-16-media-guide/). The Mavericks made the move to a digital guide in 2009-10 in order to conserve natural resources. The guide includes in-depth player bios, regular season and playoff statistics, season-by-season team history, information on community initiatives and capsules on each of the 29 other NBA teams. MAVERICKS MEDIA PASS: As a courtesy to media covering the Mavericks, the Basketball Communications staff has developed MavericksMediaPass.com (http://mavericksmediapass.com/) as a resource. The site includes shootaround, practice and media availability times, game notes and links to Mavericks stats, injury reports, press releases and more.

He was hired by Dallas in May of 2008, and is the third-longest tenured head coach in the league behind San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich (hired in December 1996) and Miami’s Erick Spoelstra (April 2008). Carlisle became the all-time winningest coach in Mavericks’ history with a 103-93 victory at the L.A. Lakers on Nov. 1, 2015, passing Don Nelson (339) with win No. 340. Carlisle has led his team to the playoffs 11 times in his 13 seasons as a head coach. He guided the Mavericks to their first-ever world championship in 2011, becoming one of only 11 individuals to win an NBA championship as both a player and a head coach (he won a title as a player with Boston in 1986). Carlisle recorded his 500th career win against Portland on Feb. 6, 2013 (Dallas won 105-99), becoming the 28th coach in NBA history to reach the milestone. Carlisle was named the ninth Dallas coach in franchise history on May 9, 2008. He joined the Mavericks after spending six seasons, with Detroit and Indiana, as a head coach. He served as an ESPN studio analyst during the 2007-08 NBA season before coming to Dallas. Carlisle began his head coaching career with Detroit. During his two-season tenure, the Pistons won 61 percent (100-64) of their games to go along with two Central Division championships and one trip to the Eastern Conference Finals. Following his first season as head coach in 2002, Carlisle earned the NBA’s Coach of the Year award. Carlisle joined Indiana as the head coach on Sept. 2, 2003. In his first year, Carlisle led the Pacers to the NBA’s best record (61-21), the most victories in franchise history, the best winning percentage in team history (.744) and a Central Division championship. He also led the Pacers to the 2004 Eastern Conference Finals where they eventually lost to the Pistons.

Carlisle, including his previous two seasons with Detroit, became the first coach since Pat Riley to win 50 games and division championships in each of his first three seasons as a head coach. Overall, Carlisle earned a 181-147 (.552) regular season record in Indiana and led the team to three consecutive postseason appearances before stepping down following the 2006-07 campaign. A native of Ogdensburg, N.Y., Carlisle began his coaching career in 1989 as an assistant with the New Jersey Nets. In five seasons with the Nets, he had the opportunity to work under Hall of Fame coaching legends Bill Fitch and Chuck Daly. Carlisle then moved on to Portland, where he spent three seasons as an assistant under P.J. Carlesimo before joining former teammate Larry Bird’s staff in Indiana during the summer of 1997. In 1984, Carlisle began his NBA career as the only rookie to make the Boston Celtics roster. He spent three seasons in Boston and enjoyed his best year as a pro when he averaged 9.9 minutes in 77 games for the 1986 world champions. He then played one year with the New York Knicks under head coach Rick Pitino before moving on to New Jersey, where he played briefly for Fitch before being offered an assistant coaching position with the franchise.
